We ended up trying a couple of local favorite items: traditional mushroom and ham tartes flambees along with a salmon tartes! Both were delicious and worked well with Alsac wines! Slip on into the delicious-smelling pizzeria, wave hello to the bartender as you're walking, and go on through the double silver doors in the back. Once there, you're in a small hallway. Which door leads to the speakeasy? It's hidden, and takes a special trick to open the swinging panel into the next room. Once you've got it, duck into the small, velvet-lined door into a true speakeasy, with a prohibition-era throwback feel. No pictures are allowed, so my description will have to suffice, but imagine high ceilings, chandeliers, and velvet-lined barstools. A friendly cocktail waitress will bring you a menu, which gives a cheeky nod to other taboo indulgences by way of including the Marquis de Sade. I had an Old Fashioned (what else would one order in a speakeasy?) made with Bulleit Bourbon. If that's not your favorite, there are a number of other bourbon whiskies on the menu to try. Wow what a fantastic experience we ordered the onion soup as an appetizer to share, which was creamy and delicious with chunks of bread and lots of cheese on top. My husband ordered the Cordon Bleu. Which was nicely presented and had a generous filling with cheese and ham inside. I opted for the beef of the day which was a grilled flank steak served with potatoes and a salad. I am very picky about my beef and this was fantastic grilled to perfection, medium rare and absolutely fantastic. I rarely finish a meal, but I ate every bit of this and enjoyed every bite. We had a nice dry riesling to go along with our meal and ordered crème brûlée for dessert. The service was also incredible attentive, but not smothering. Annie was kind to us non-French speakers and provided a menu in English. I would suggest making a reservation in the evening, although we did not have to wait the place filled up as we were there for a couple hours. The ambience is very sweet and cozy. I stumbled upon Aux P'tits Crocs unexpectedly; the heavily-spiced aroma and the maneuvering hot steam of the vin chaud stand right in front pulled me back a few feet. I realized there was a restaurant behind and I was hungry--plus the Chocroute was about €10 less than the other fancy restaurants around; I was sold! It's not fancy by any means, and it's not all decked out in extravagant Christmas decor at all to catch your eye, but if you want a simple, no-frills meal and you have no high standards, this is a great place to grab a meal. I got the Choucroute 4 viandes (kassler, smoked breast, duck breast, and Strasbourg sausage). It was my first time having Choucroute and a real Alsatian meal (which is mostly German-inspired), so I can't really compare, but I thought it was wonderful. The meat cuts were fresh and juicy, and grilled perfectly; I felt like I was eating at 4-star restaurant. Eating this with sauerkraut and dijon mustard was a little foreign to me, since I don't eat German or French food, but nice to slather with the meats.
