The causeway bridge toll is now $5. Gone are the days of $2 and $3 tolls, and lesser traffic. However, I will say that the toll workers are in good spirits (especially around rush hour of 7-8 AM), and that there appears to be more people utilizing the electronic tag option as opposed to always paying cash (makes traffic go quicker). About 30 miles of lake water to traverse into Metairie, then New Orleans from the Covington area. Two lane bridge that has a couple of turnarounds if needed. So I'm not from here and I thought I was simply going on a bridge from Covington to New Orleans. However, I was wrong. I knew it was a long bridge, but I didn't know it was this long. Actually, it is the longest bridge in the US above water. Also, when I hit around the 8th mile mark, I looked behind me and I couldn't see any land then I didn't see any land looking forward. It's not a high bridge which is a relief, but it is two lanes in each direction without any shoulders. There are turn around points, if a person panics. The ride back was a little bit easier because I knew there was an end in site. There is a $5 toll heading South into New Orleans from Covington, but not a toll heading North. read more

Who knew that you could review the actual Toll Plaza and the bridge? Normally I wouldn't review both, but I have some things to say. 1. It is a toll plaza. That means you have to pay a toll. Be prepared so that I do not have to wait any longer than necessary. 2. If there is fog, there will be people yelling at you to turn on your headlights. 3. If there is fog, and a convoy, prepare to wait. The convoys and lane restrictions on the causeway are some of the most frustrating things about living on the Northshore. 4. Toll Tags - get one, save money. It's that simple. 5. Toll collectors- Theses people are friendly, awesome and make the commute a little better. Make sure you are nice too them. 6. Barricades - If you are drunk and the mayor, don't hit them. It will bring a world of misery on everyone involved. I think that about sums up what I have to say. read more

I never have a problem here. I pay with cash. I try to have correct change. I always make sure I prepare before I get there. The toll person smiles at me, I say hello. Toll person says hello too. The toll is only paid heading south on the Causeway Bridge. The toll booth operators are friendly enough, though I am curious. What makes one apply, get hired and keep this position? I'm assuming these people are employed by the city of Mandeville. Maybe by the state. I'm not sure. Any way. It's $3 to head 20+ miles south on a bridge with no shoulders that will make sounds to lull you to sleep. It is nice if you have exact change, but they seem to have change ready for almost any denomination of bill. The largest bill I've tried is a $20. The one time they did not collect the toll was during a bad storm. I'm assuming they didn't want to get wet. The only gender neutral restrooms (or restrooms at all) are the port-a-johns on the crossovers, but you will be harassed by the police that sit there if you stop. read more

What a relief it is to see the wrong side of the Toll Plaza in the morning! You have just finished a 24 mile drive, but you know you're not caught up in the morning madness of the southbound commute. It's even nicer in the afternoon as you drive through the toll plaza and you see the sea of cars heading northward, only a couple of car lengths apart, braking and accelerating every few minutes. Southbound in the afternoon, once on the bridge, you can set your car on cruise control, and go. The toll plaza is simplicity itself, four toll booths to funnel vehicles onto two lanes on the bridge. The round trip toll is collected only on the Northshore. The toll is $3.00 (cash) for cars. Toll tags can be purchased, and entitle you to a $1.00 discount per trip. In the mornings, two of the four booths are toll tag only. In the afternoon, only one is dedicated to toll tags. (Tags do work in all toll booths though.) The Metairie toll booths were torn down years ago to help speed afternoon traffic onto the bridge. It did improve the traffic flow. The Causeway toll tag can also be used to cross the Crescent City Connection to the West Bank if an additional account is set up. Nothing official, but I think this will probably change when the Causeway converts to the new toll tag system. read more

Is it just me or does the Causeway seem like forever? Yes, I know it's the longest bridge, yada yada! Growing up and living on the south shore, everytime I go on the Causeway it feels like a vacation to me! Usually it's for church retreats, church events (Theology on Tap at the Abita Brewery), shopping (UAL before they opened one here in NOLA), meeting up with family and friends. During a nice sunny day the drive is spectacular. Of course watching the sun setting is quite beautiful! Sometimes I wish they had a shoulder so you could stop and take pictures! You can see the boats in the lake and it's quite nice! Love being near water! However, at night or during bad weather (rain, fog etc.) this bridge seems to go on forever. The Northshore is quite beautiful with the Trace, restaurants, shopping, etc but I couldn't do this commute across the Causeway every weekday. It would drive me nuts (yes I meant to write that! Hehe). I used to watch a former boss have to schedule around driving on the Causeway because he and his wife work down on the south shore. Nuts! Anywho, it is a well-maintained bridge with several turn arounds. There are always cops on the bridge so go the speed limit. Also, there are hilly parts so slow down since you can't see too far in front of you! Finally, there is a toll coming back to the Southshore so make sure you have $3! Happy Driving! read more

This is the longest bridge over water in the US. Make sure you have cash at hand as you will under no circumstance be able to use this toll road. Most of the staff members are nice. We've ran into some nasty attitudes before. The bridge is safe. I just wish they would add taller walls. Make sure you're gassed up and your windshield wiper fluid is filled as you never know what kind of bird or bug will find it's way on your windshield. During the summer the spillways are usually open which leads to bugs that have been unidentifiable and they are most prevalent at night. read more

Let me start by saying I'm not from LA. I was traveling to Mandeville for an event from New Orleans. When you are headed north there is no toll. When I was leaving night 1 headed back south, the same way I came I suddenly approached some toll booths and was completely confused. I was in a rental car thinking surely there is a toll tag on this car, so I go through the toll tag only lane and as I'm going through someone hollers out at me but I had no way to stop or turn around. Let me add it's also dark and raining. Now for 20 miles I was wondering if I'm going to get a ticket or how does this work with my rental... I guess I'll eventually get billed or something. Day 2 of my event and I'm headed back north on the causeway. I'm intently looking for signs of tolls ... I see nothing of the sort. End of event and need to head back south to New Orleans in the dark. Again I'm approaching the toll booth still completely confused why there is a toll on one side and not the other. This time I went in the cash/ toll tag lane. I read the sign that says for two axels it's $5 cash. I asked the toll booth lady if they take card. She says no, cash only. I said I don't have any cash. She then directs me to the turn around and to follow the signs to the ATM they have there at the toll booth office. Uhh what the hell ... is all I could think. I should have just driven through like I did on night one. I felt like I tried to do the right thing and got tricked somehow. I ended up driving over to the ATM which there is a $2 fee on. So I really spent $7 to go back on south. The whole thing is confusing and I was definitely frustrated. There are no signs warning you about anything. Worst set up ever. Ha ha! I finally checked in to the toll plaza, safely I might add. No one likes tolls and you can avoid it by taking the Twin Span back to New Orleans but this toll plaza has been swift and painless for me though many a time I've had to take a quick exit to get money ($3) for the toll. The toll peeps don't hate me when they have to break a $20 but it's too bad they don't make them wear Hawaiian shirts like the toll peeps along Florida's highways do or at least wife beaters and overalls. Why the 4th star you ask? 1. They've never given me flack for my two mongrels that bark at the attendants EVERY TIME. 2. They didn't report "my friend" who was talking on the phone whilst paying the toll unawares when 2 or 3 red balloons were sucked out "my friend's" car window into oncoming traffic after just passing the toll. read more

I don't go to the Northshore very often, but I have never had an issue at the toll plaza. They always seem to have a good number of lanes open, I've never been stuck behind someone who didn't have their money ready and I've never been stuck in traffic here. The toll takers have always been nice, but most times I have been riding with someone who has a toll tag. If you are a regular bridge crosser, invest in a toll tag and save yourself a little time. read more

This 24-mile long 4-lane divided draw-bridge is the longest bridge ever built over water. The toll is $5.00. The north bound entrance is in Mandeville, while the south bound entrance is Metairie, LA, giving the driver quick access into or from downtown New Orleans. The draw-bridge is at the 16-mile point. The thing that most impressed me is the 7 crossover sections, allowing a vehicle to pull over out of the flow of traffic, and allowing emergency personnel easy access to both directions of traffic. Emergency personnel are stationed at the crossovers awaiting any situation to occur. As a driver who frequently travels over a long 4-lane divided bridge, I was very impressed by the design of this bridge, especially the crossovers and emergency staff on hand for quick resolution of problems. Also, to be driving over such a huge and beautiful expanse of water as Lake Pontchartrain is an experience everyone should have at least once in their life, so do not hesitate to take this bridge into New Orleans. Just be prepared once you exit the bridge, the traffic is heavy and the roads can be confusing in the congested New Orleans area. Enjoy the view and safe travels! read more

Not sure what all you can really say about this bridge. I understand it's the 2nd longest bridge across water in the world. That's pretty cool. $3 to cross it. They just approved it to be raised to $5 which I find ridiculous so for that reason I give 3 stars. Not sure what is up with all these people who end up jumping the rail and ending up in the lake. The Causeway Bridge connects the area north of Lake Pontchartrain to the New Orleans area. Make sure you're serious about heading over the bridge, because it's over 20 miles long! The $3 toll (only on the Southbound direction) allows passage onto the bridge, which is pretty impressive as the longest continuous bridge over water in the world. History says it's never been affected by any hurricanes, and it was even important in getting emergency help into New Orleans after Katrina. I hear it's busy during rush hour, but otherwise, enjoy the beauty of the lake and the engineering as you head in or out of New Orleans! read more

Toll to head South is $3. They are always fast. If you live in the area, it's worth it to get a tag that is mounted to your windshield.
