On a last minute dinner adventure, we found Bratschall Manala on our evening walk in Kayserberg,…read moreand it was not a disappointment as it was a quick discovery along the cobblestone road! Small inside, it seated mostly French tourists from other parts of France, but I was happy there was a table two by the wall for us. Apparently, the restaurant also had some German influences as we noticed some German dishes listed on the menu. What we had: 1/2 F O I E G R A S S A L A D E : I really wanted foie gras so we split a salad that is now one of the best salads that I ever had. So simple and adorned with raw mushrooms, picked radish, squash, beets, apples, seeds, olives, fried bread, and of course, foie gras! It was so good for two and I linger for it to this day. Q U I C H E L O R R A I N E & S A L A D E : Cheesy, eggy, thick bacon, and too big for me, I just love real french quiche lorraine and I was happy I decided on it. Although I would have liked pomme frites, I wasn't sure if it was okay that I ask for it, but I noticed someone else had a quiche and had pomme frites. LA C H È V R E T A R T E : A big tarte nearly a size of a pizza, with cheese, thick bacon, and baby goat cheese on top. It was yummy too, but it tasted very similar to my quiche. So we made a mistake in ordering similar items but in different forms, but nonetheless, we both liked the restaurant for a quick last minute find in Kayserberg x

It turns out that everyone enjoyed eating here more than anyplace else on the visit to Strasbourg, including a couple of Michelin-star stops. The burger (topped with ham and cheese) was juicy, well-seasoned and delicious. It was served with very good fries and a fresh green salad. The steak tartare, served on top of crispy hash-brown potatoes, was met with high praise. In addition to main courses, the restaurant has a showcase of beautiful desserts. Due to time constraints, we did not stay for dessert. Service here is excellent. The food came out quickly, and the servers were extremely attentive. When we were ready to leave, they were quick with the bill. They seemed to understand that you may have limited time, so everything moved at a relatively fast pace.

Our German friend is a Michelin guide afficianado and was impressed with the restaurant's library of Michelin guides, so we knew we were in for a treat and we were right. The server spoke all three languages, so ordering was easy but deciding what to choose was not. My munster cheese appetizer was like nothing I had ever had with delicate flavors, just the right crispness to the cheese and it came with a light vinaigrette mixed salad. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his rabbit with apricots, and I loved my pike perch with pike dumpling, small vegetables strips with ginger and fresh coriander which was beautifully presented. Our German friends loved their foie gras and trout. My cherry sorbet was flavorful and the creme brulee creamy. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Whether it's true or not I've heard that the Alsace region has the most Michelin starred restaurants of all the regions of France, and so far everything I had in Alsace didn't disappoint me a bit, thanks to my friend Gauthier!!! :-) La Taverne Alsacienne offers various "Tarte Flambée", also known as "Flammekueche" , which is like a thin crust pizza with cream, onion, and chopped bacon. We ordered the classic version with Munster (Alsacienne cream cheese) which was excellent! It's simple and yet so tasty! YUM!!! From the list of various röestis (potato and cheese garnished casserole), my friend picked the one with thick piece of pancetta and egg on top, which was a rustic, hearty, and simple dish. It was a bit heavy so I recommend you share it with a few friends. Alsace offers a wealth of gastronimic joy, I really need to explore France more!!! Vive la France!

It was nice to get to get an authentic taste of what food is like in Alsace. The space is small and a little cramped, but it doesn't damper the experience. The menu prices are also very reasonable...like a breath of fresh air if you have been getting used to paying higher menu prices the rest of your European trip. It was a nice meal for a good price and an authentic experience. Wine is also so cheap! It makes sense though since you are in a wine region. No export fees or upcharges...you're getting it straight from the source! You can order a bottle of wine for less than $10. Its cheaper than soda!
