After a solid five minutes of eye contact and mutual confusion, she grunted and pointed at a table that I'm pretty sure was held together by hope and one rusty screw. The food: I ordered the "house special," which tasted like someone described what flavor should be, then forgot halfway through and gave up. The chicken was simultaneously burnt, cold, and somehow wet. Physics took one look and walked out. The service: Our server vanished like a Victorian spirit the moment we sat down. I'm convinced he joined witness protection. I saw him once more, briefly, like a cryptid sighting, only to have him drop my drink so hard it carbonated itself on impact. The bathroom: Look... I've been to music festivals. I've survived porta-potties at county fairs. I've seen stuff. But whatever was going on in that restroom? That was a crime scene. The toilet paper roll was sitting on the counter like it had escaped and was considering a new life in Peru. The ambiance: Lights flickering like we were dining inside a horror movie.
