I like to saunter along, barter with the chirpy market folk and pick up various things for my tea - buffalo mozzarellla, honey, jam, crumbly bread and slabs of fresh meat. Don't go there when you're hungry - it's dangerous as you'll come away with twice as much. Head down to Corn Street, near St. Nick's market, every Wednesday 9.30 am -2.30pm.

The focus is on fresh food from local producers; its the farmers themselves that are selling you the goods. There's more or less everything you could imagine finding on a farm, with highlights including the various organic meat stalls (v. expensive) and the fruit stalls later in the summer, when you can get some of the recent strawberry crop People know about their goods and love to talk about it. This isn't a supermarket experience and people are keen to have a chat - it's a bit like being in the countryside, funnily enough. It runs on a Wednesday, so if you're working in the city centre (it's based by St. Nicholas Market on Corn Street) treat yourself in your coffee/lunch break and pick up some crusty bread and cheddar cheese. You'll feel much better than you would queueing up with the other suits, even if it does cost a little bit more.

It's a pretty big occasion in Fishponds, and many of the locals (and not so locals) turn up in force to sample the sweet delights of the local(ish) farming comunity. From you flash frying beef steaks to your pork and apple sausages, and your fresh baking potatoes to you spring onions with extra punch there is something for everyone. The food quality is top notch, better than anything you can buy in the supermarkets. Great to stock up if your planning a month of wonderous food, or to treat yourself to a big fat juicy steak just because you can!

It's only been happening for about a year and it's held on the little grassy bit between Straits Parade and Fishponds Road. The stallholders are local bods and farmers themselves, extremely approachable and know all about the beautiful produce they peddle. Best of all are the free samples of cheese, chutneys and bread etc lined up on each stall. You could practically eat your entire lunch for free. The delish selection includes: cordials, juices, mineral waters, jams & spreads, baked goods, fresh fruit, veg and salad, meat, poultry and fish, pastas, pickles, cheese and dairy.

Everything you need for a Sunday roast in fact. I spent £10 and got a huge piece of pork, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, chillis and 6 free range eggs and a pint of milk from their cows. Not bad! Only really accessible from Bristol by car, when you arrive you're greeted by a friendly old sheep dog and several honking geese, evidence that yes, this is a fully working and very traditional farm. The buildings are rustic stone, there's mud in the yard and horses and cows in the fields. Lovely - and you won't see that at your local supermarket. The cheese counter is especially well stocked and there are plenty of homemade chutneys and pickles to go with it. Tempting treats include cakes and organic crisps and chocs. The staff are more than happy to help you find what you want, even late on a Sunday. A genuinely lovely place to buy your groceries.

I ordered from Low and Slow BBQ and it really hit the spot. The combo meal came with beef brisket, burnt ends, pulled pork, 2 sides, and salad. The food trucks / shops are especially this eclectic range from Caribbean to Turkish and everything in between. If I have one complaint, it's that the market closes up at 5pm on a Saturday and I wish it would stay open later! There's two special quirks about this building that are especially also worth checking out; 1) The clock has an extra minute hand! That's apparently a remnant of the train friendly Victorian days, when Bristol had its own time zone that was different from Greenwich Medium time which is what the London trains would run. 2) if you look up towards the ceiling in the main hall, the sculptures of the heads all look towards the middle, except for two which are turning their heads to look at each other. Rumour has it this is because those two women were the wife and mistress of the building's architect! I very much enjoyed checking out this market! Yelp 161/ 2019

Packert Butchers is known in these parts for its sausages. Hardly surprising being a butcher shop you may think, but the extent to which different sausages are produced here is really quite interesting. From Italian to Hungarian, all sausage styles have been mastered here in what they call their 'mini sausage factory'. As one would expect for such an outstanding business that's been here for twelve years all the meat is fresh, local and where possible, organic. Open before and after you go to work, this is a clean, fresh and professional butcher. Little reason not to visit then unless, well, you're a vegetarian.

The owner is really friendly and will always point out the right cut and quantity of produce to meet your needs. I struggled to find a butcher around here that would beat Packerts for quality and value. Although I don't live close by anymore Its definitely worth a trip back to stock up the freezer.
