I Google searched "Presbyterian church" and found/chose StMarks because it was closest to my hotel and ultimately a relatively cheap Uber ride. When I visit a church it's mostly for me...provides me some food for thought through the minister...get my mind right for the coming week. Very rarely do I think "I wish this were my home church". First time in 20yrs, of business travel and going to church...the thought "wow, I wish this were my home church" crossed my mind. Why is that? Their service is the perfect blend of a traditional Presbyterian worship service (a lot of standing up and siting down, which I've always liked) while sprinkling in the modern, the minister that day was female, something I rarely see and talked about welcoming the LGBT community to Christianity in general. They have an organist! My home church doesn't have an organist ! They have not discarded traditional hymns, which frankly made me emotional because it has been so long since I've heard them during a worship service( literally music to my ears). They didn't have a choir but that's not unusual. They did have someone leading the music, and the words were projected onto a wall. From the traditional to modern the music here put me in the right frame of mind. The message the minister offered was thought provoking which gave me something to ponder the rest of the week (as I conducted my business). Lastly, the congregation was super friendly and welcoming. There were those in the congregation who came from the front area (i sat in the very back row) to give me "a sign of peace"...and I'd be remise if I didn't acknowledge all the others who welcomed me before the start of the service. It was truly an awesome visit and reminded me of all the good things I recall from going to church during my childhood and at the same time made me realize that I'm not after all a very good example of being a Christian...something I need to work on. This is my first ever Yelp of a church and I'm doing so because I got all I needed here, spiritually, I was at peace when I left and thought it was valuable from a visitor point of view to share the uniqueness of this congregation. Again, I wish this was my home church!

Eric Lopez, a Franciscan priest, gave a beautiful homily in the Chapel. We weren't sure where the Chapel was located at first, but found it - directly in front of the Church, across the parking lot.

I can count on Father Mike or Father Larry (both ex-lawyers, Harvard Law alums) to give a sermon that will inspire me, make me think, and encourage me to act on my beliefs, not just hum them in church. The congregation looks like the world, and it is warm and welcoming. And the world music alone at the 10:30 mass is worth the trip alone. This is the first time I've been at a church that speaks and acts with integrity.

The church today is about 25% under 45 with a good size population of young children. Children and Youth are involved in the church and the service. Visit any Sunday--service starts at 10:45 until June 17--then it starts at 10 through the summer. June 17 is a very special Sunday where service is also held at Lake Needwood, near the boathouse.
