Upper Iowa Resort & Rental - Eagle and nest

We discovered Iowa's campgrounds were open and stumbled upon this beautiful campground only three hours from the city right along the upper Iowa river. Luckily it was early in the season because they said they fill up fast during summer months. Heads up, there is no cell phone service here but some free wifi if needed. They booked us a tent site right on the rivers edge! The sites were all marked well and were well shaded with trees. Each site had a picnic table and fire ring and gave you enough space between sites. The office has some food for sale and other needed things like firewood. There is also a man made swimming hole/small lake for families to enjoy because the river is hard to swim in sometimes. They have kayak and canoe rentals to enjoy on the river. I highly recommend doing this! The scenery here is beautiful! Way better then we expected. They can shuttle you to either a four hour run or six hour run down the river. We did the six hour run which did get quite long. The water was a little high but it was still very safe for a beginner. I also heard that fishing is great here when the water is clear. The owners are so nice and accommodating. Prices are very reasonable and you and the family will have such a great time here!

We used their shuttle service to kayak the upper Iowa river and had a fabulous time - spotted 30 plus bald eagles, one of which had a brand new fledgling peeking out of her nest. The resort has a small lake on site, Wi-Fi, and is close to a small town if you need to get back to a little civilization. We were treated to a gorgeous fish filled river with eagles flying up and down the water on a regular basis.

The bar was busy as it was memorial weekend and if the guest didn't understand then you need to understand business. The amount of things for kids was great having the splash pad, huge blow up slide, the bounce house, and the parks for them to enjoy. Never felt unsafe or not on with the kids running and playing at the park alone with us watching them from the camp site. For wood is cheap when it being nog able to bring your own in and the restaurant and bar isn't expensive. The downfall is the WIFI coverage got worse from the last visit. We had absolutely no reception to connect the tv for the kids and well our Cell provider is garbage. The lady at the store noted they are updating the WIFI boosters. The day we left we decided to stop up at the restaurant and have some snacks before leaving the service was slower but they were busy and had a lot of things they were trying to accomplish with poor staff minus the manager or leader of some sort the was stressed but made the best of it. We will be back and are going back in only a few short days. Skip Away you made us visitors until we turn to a seasonal space.

This was once my happy place, I could not wait to get to our seasonal camp site every weekend of…read morethe camping season. We built a deck, put up a shed, took exceptional care of yard and watered it religiously. We made many new friends and rekindled some old friendships. That all drastically came to screeching halt on July 17th of this summer. One of our friends (also seasonal campers) decided to bring attention to the owner of Skip-a-way of some safety and lack of modesty issues occurring on one of the campground tractor pulled picnic table. She was told he was not going to take any complaints from her as he had received so many complaints regarding her 'group.' He then came up to the the picnic table ride on his side by side, with grin on his face and explained that he had gotten some complaints regarding people (the driver of the tractor) on the picnic table throwing beer cans in campers yards. After a little discussion they decided to go up and apologize to the camper who complained. This should have been the end of it. But the owner decided to race up to the campsite that called with complaints and pick a fight, calling her a liar and asked her to point out the person who was flashing people on the ride because he had just asked 'everyone' on the ride if anyone was flashing people and they all denied it. Here is the weird part, the owner, let's call him Doug, never asked anyone about people flashing on the ride. How do I know this?? I was on that ride when Doug pulled up to the picnic table ride. The only thing he asked about was the cans being thrown. Doug did nothing to try to calm this situation down, he was the gas lighter. It was awful. He ended up calling the sheriff's department down to the campground and ultimately evicted the camper(my friends and the one who made the complaint) from the campground on grounds of what Doug described as being 'disrespectful to the owner.' All while that is going on, Doug's wife, we will call her Courtney, came over to the neighbors (also my friends) to complain about their child climbing the blow up slide the wrong direction earlier in the day along with every other 'horrible' thing their children have ever done over the summer. Courtney came with guns a blazing and was very accusatory, there was lots of yelling, I heard it all as I sat at my camper in an attempt to not be involved. Later in the night she accuse this camper of trying to physically attack her (a blatant lie). This also ended in an eviction on the same premise as the previously mentioned camper. Two families were evicted that night. It was gut wrenching and a horrible example of ownership/management on behalf of skip-away campground. Since that night there have been a few positive reviews on this site on how great this campground is and hope nice the workers are and how great the owners are. I would like those reading those to take those with a grain of salt as many of those people are actual friends of the owners and therefore are very biased. Do not inhale that raspberry smoke being blown in your face, because that is all it is, smoke to get positive reviews for this campground after all the negative publicity they have received this summer. I have been holding this all in since that night because I was told by Doug that I would be next to be evicted. But we have officially moved out of our spot and taken all of our property and now feel it is safe to tell our story. If you choose to camp here I hope you do not share the same expertise we have had, maybe this will be a learning experience for Doug and Courtney. And I hope that's the case, but I for one will continue to be very skeptical.
