Now that I'm back on the East Coast, I can both trust fish at restaurants more and pay less for it, so I went with the salt cod fish cakes ($17). You know how they say your plate should have lots of different colours of food? Well this was NOT that. While this meal won't win any awards from the Canada Food Guide, it did well by my taste buds. The fish cakes themselves were loosely packed and had a pleasant punch of salty fish, and the green tomato chow brought a contrast of sweet and tangy to the mix. The side of beans had a smattering of what appeared to be bacon in it, and were just the right doneness - not chalky or mushy. Thumbs up! The corn beef hash was a bit greasy, but it was delicious - crisp bits of beef and potato with sauteed onions - it's hard to go wrong here. My wife went for the diner staple, meatloaf ($17). After this meal it became her go-to dish at Appleseed, and I can see why. The generous slab of meatloaf is light and moist, and a slathering of mushroom and onion gravy makes it even more hearty. Ultra-smooth whipped potatoes are a classic pairing, done picture perfect. A medley of veg likely came out of a massive freezer bag, and while a diner fixture, it's one that could be easily replaced with any sort of seasonal veg that is prepared in a better manner than steaming. On our return, I went with the hot chicken sandwich ($17). The roasted chicken was moist and tender, although a little sparse. A hearty slathering of gravy was good, and not too salty. I really appreciated the thick, quality bread that stood up well against the onslaught of gravy. As always, their shoestring fries were spot on. I doubled down on diner decadence and got a strawberry milkshake ($6.50) to drink. Appleseed gets a tip of my cap for using the classic milkshake glass, plus topping it with whipped cream and a maraschino cherry. Further bonus points for the extra bit of milkshake coming in the aluminum cup it was mixed in. It was a thick, tasty treat. I still wish Appleseed was in a better location with an interior that called back more to its cozy diner peers rather than strip mall industrial chic, but you can't win 'em all. It's still not easy to get more creative, casual food in Pictou County, so Appleseed is definitely an asset to the local food scene.

We came in the early afternoon and it wasn't overly busy. Two servers didn't look overly interested in being there and were slow as slugs. There was a bartender mixing drinks who looked annoyed and a cook in the food truck who was the only one actually invested in what he was doing. Seating is flimsy and grinds on the concrete floors when you try to move. Tables were crammed quite close together because a musician eventually came in to set up. The space just generally looks poorly used. Our server took a long time coming over to bring us a pitcher of beer and then again to take our food order. The glassware was dirty so she apologized and brought new glasses. By the time we poured the beer, we noticed the pitcher was even filthier. Not sure if they ever wash them. The food is just ok. Nothing to write home about. Portions are on the smaller side. $14 was the Super Bowl special for a small bacon cheeseburger with nothing else, no side. $19 for fish and chips is a bit of a better deal because the fish is big but it's quite greasy. Fries were hard and stale and not really a generous portion - don't opt to pay $4 for them as a side! We watched the cook push out orders and wait around for the servers to pick them up. He'd look out trying to get their attention and seemed completely unimpressed with them. Other than brining our drinks and food, the server didn't bother to come by once in the hour + we sat at the table. When she finally came for us to pay, she seemed terrified to have to talk to a human. Overall, just a weird vibe for a place like this. This could be a great spot but it didn't leave a great first impression. Might give it one more shot next time we're in town, but we won't be ordering food. We'll see how long it takes to get an (overpriced) cocktail.

Steeltown Takeout - Fish and chips

Steeltown Takeout opened up around the same time I moved out of Nova Scotia, so it was way off my…read moreradar until recently when I moved back to the county. The casual fare of takeout spots, diners and chip trucks are at the worst a mediocre indulgence, but when they do the simple things really, really well, they become a thing of beauty. It was with this hope that my first visit saw me come by with my brother-in-law and nephew, fueling up before a guys movie night. I opted for the one piece fish and chips ($13.95). The fish was a decent size - not absurdly big, but not tiny either. The rest of of container was loaded with chunky, skin-on fries. The fish was nice and flaky, with no mushy fish-to-batter interface. Despite it being the end of their day, neither the fish or fries tasted like old oil. Overall, it was a very solid performance for a place that doesn't specialize in fish and chips. My fries were crispy and piping hot out of the fryer. They could have used more salt before serving, but this was easily remedied. I swear it's a thing in small towns that fries aren't pre-salted in the kitchen. Judging from the approving nods and animalistic sounds of eating, my brother in-law and nephew were quite happy with their BBQ mozza bacon burger platters ($14). On my return visit, I came by with an even bigger crew, bringing visiting family from my wife's side. Hungry after a day of entertaining our two nieces, I strategically ordered a cheeseburger ($7.50) a la carte, knowing that I'd be getting a significant portion of my wife's turkey dinner poutine ($13.50). The cheeseburger hit all the right notes of a good, simple diner burger - a little char on the patty from the grill, a hint of sweetness from fried onions, the sweet tang of relish and pickles, the melty umami of processed cheese, and a sharp hit from the mustard. I axed the ketchup (#TeamNoKetchup), and tomato and iceberg lettuce were there, but hardly noteworthy. Before ordering, I had specifically checked to see what the size of the turkey dinner poutine was, and it basically comes in a family-sized fry container. Opening it up, we were treated to the delicious scents of the hot mess within - thick-cut fries, chunks of dressing, bits of turkey, and shredded mozza - all slathered in a hefty dose of hearty gravy. Having moved back to Pictou County from Ottawa, poutines that don't use cheese curds are a bit ruined for me, but Steeltown's TDP was still a tasty delight of rich, savoury flavours. We also added on a cup of cranberry sauce, which was a nice touch, and one which my cranberry-sauce-loving wife greatly appreciated. "Downtown" Trenton may not have much, but it has Steeltown Takeout and that's more than enough to bring you there.

Your Place Eatery - Little Mess burger

The menu has a lot of familiar food truck items, but it's a bit larger and a bit fancier. But not *too* fancy - this is Lower Barney's River, after all. There's several different burgers, chicken sandwiches, subs, deep-fried apps, and even some donairs! My wife's hunger lured her toward the first thing she saw on the menu - the bacon cheeseburger poutine - and I went for the Little Mess burger. There weas only a couple people ahead of us mid-afternoon on a Sunday, so we had our food in quick order and set up shop on one of their picnic tables. The Little Mess burger is the smaller version of their spin on a Big Mac, the Big Mess. Both have shredded lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions and a house-made special sauce, except the Little Mess has just one 1/4lb patty instead of the Big Mess' two. All the familiar flavours worked well together, with the added benefit of much, much better beef than the burger's corporate inspiration. I didn't see much of a crust on this smashburger, but it was quite good nonetheless. Having gotten my burger a la carte, I had room for the inevitable portion of my wife's poutine that she wouldn't be able to finish. And to be fair, no one person should be crushing a hefty poutine on their own, especially sober. While Your Place's regular poutine has cheese curds (bonus points!), the bacon cheeseburger poutine leans into its theme, going with shredded cheddar and a cheese sauce for that extra hot 'n' cheesy mess factor. The bits of burger and bacon amped up the flavour and savouriness, and the fries that weren't completed doused in cheese seemed to be well cooked. Not even the crispest fry can withstand this onslaught of cheese! Given their location, Your Place could coast by doing the bare minimum, standard chip wagon food, so it's really cool that they're putting in the effort to offer the area more and they're doing a killer job at it!
