I love this park, the dogs, and MOST of the people who are educated in dogs and understanding behaviors and training.

This is a great park to enjoy the day. I always enjoy bringing my two fur babies here as they can have a great run or a walk or some simple chill time. You can also bike here as well. read more

Needed a walk. I walk daily! I grew up in Ventura County and had never been or heard of this place. A park where a cemetery once was is pretty weird. I would never have a picnic or bring my dog to pee all over the graves either. To me, not respectful at all. They have such beautiful grass though! Did a loop around and continued walking a few more blocks. Interesting how I keep discovering new places having lived most of my life in VC! read more

This is a really nice park with an absolutely wonderful view. It is set on Main Street, just before downtown Ventura. It's an old cemetery that they removed the headstones to make it a park. Being somewhat elevated on the hillside, it's a perfect location because from anywhere in the park you have a gorgeous view of the ocean and can see all the way out to the channel Islands. This is a dog friendly park where a lot of people bring their dogs to play and run around. There are some trees scattered about which make for some nice shade, but it's mainly just grass and a parking lot on the side. There are some signs explaining the history of the cemetery- turned -park. It's really a peaceful and relaxing place, whether you go with your dog or not. I recommend taking a blanket so you can sprawl out and take a nap, read, or just sit and enjoy the view. read more

A lovely ocean view and room to roam on the grass covered hillside in the middle of town, this spot is a cemetery turned dog park. There are usually several dogs off leash chasing balls, so it is a very active area. Parking is available along Poli St. and Main Street, plus there is a bumpy parking lot on the downtown side. Sidewalks surround the park, so you can enjoy the views while taking your morning constitutional or catch a great sunset while you play catch with your dog. read more

This downtown park looks non-descript: a green lawn the size of a city block with some trees and a parking lot. However the park is controversial and possibly haunted. For some reason, the city decided to convert the cemetery (formerly St. Mary's Cemetery, which served the city from 1869 to 1941) into a park while leaving some of the grave markers and human remains. It's odd to see people playing Frisbee and walking their dogs among the grave markers. One of these graves belongs to James Sumner, the recipient of the Medal of Honor for his gallantry during the Indian Wars. There is something disrespectful and odd about the City of Ventura's decision. The park is rumored to be haunted by several ghosts and is one of the stops of the Haunted Ventura tour. I think at least one homeless person lives in the bushes. read more

Cemetary Memorial Park. The name gives a pretty good clue to what this park started off as- one of Ventura's earliest cemetaries. When I was a kid, I used to love wandering through the overgrown, unkempt grounds and checking out the gravestones with dates in the mid 19th Century into the early 20th. There were even a couple of "New Orleans" style above ground crypts. Pretty creepy, and definately not some place to go to in the dark! The city cleared out the gravestones years and years ago and smoothed everything down under a nice lawn. The big open place is perfect for letting your dog have a bit of a run. Its also a nice place to enjoy a sunny afternoon looking out to the Channel Islands. There is a parking lot on one side of the park, and plenty of street parking on the other three. read more

it's rather funny that this place is considered a dog park, as I still remember my class running past it every week during High School Gym Class, It's weird to know that a park that once was the resting place (and still might be) for past Ventura residents is now a place where we take our furbabies to play. The park itself is pretty and it's nice to be able to sit and watch my pup play, though she tends to stick close to me rather than playing with other dogs, of course I've always said Lucy was a little tease. :) Side street parking is at busy times it may be hard to find a place to park. This is such a great park. I've been coming here for at least 10 years now and I've brought my dog here on multiple occasions. This good sized park is just a stone's throw from the ocean in downtown Ventura and has a tiny parking lot as well as street parking. You can bring your dogs to roam, and that seems to be what many people utilize the space for. The city provides poop bags for your fur baby. The coolest thing about this park in my opinion is that....well....it's a converted cemetery!!! Apparently this used to be the cemetery for St Mary's Catholic Church and the city proper until it was moved. I've heard rumors that there used to be above ground markers and crypts but for as long as I've been utilizing this park I've never seen any (how cool would that be though?!) Instead, if you walk through the cemetery you'll start to notice grave markers that are set flush into the grass itself. At first you think "ok, maybe it's just one or two" but there are quite a few headstones here. There are Veterans of multiple wars interred here (including two Civil War, a Spanish American war veteran and one from the Indian Wars) and their markers are beautiful and elaborate and stand out from the others. The dates go quite a ways back (think 18th and early 19th century) and it's quite fascinating to wander through the park and think on the lives that some of these people may have led and the things they saw. Contrary to what people think, there IS a large sign at the back of the park near Poli St that has some information on old Ventura, as well as some photographs and information on some of the families and notable persons who are buried there. There's also a sign/marker at the front of the park honoring Ventura's earliest pioneers and founding families. Honestly, that's my biggest draw in coming to this park and it's why I keep coming back. I never come with the intent to disrespect, I never litter here and always pick up after my dog. I've had picnics in the summer here, I've had first dates here, I've played frisbee and made memories all throughout this park. I've never once felt like what I've done here is disrespectful to the dead and if I felt like the dead did not want me here I would not come. I never feel that. I just really love Cemetery Park. It really fits in beautifully with the whole 'haunted' vibe Ventura gives off and is a unique place that is great for history buffs. read more

Cemetery Memorial Park is just that, a cemetery. I happened upon this "park" when I was visiting Ventura. I was looking for a park to walk my dog, let him stretch his legs kinda thing. After parking in the dirt lot adjacent to the park I leashed my dog and began to walk him around. I was surprised to find head stones scattered around the park so I did some research and found out this "park" was/is actually a cemetery turned park in the late 60's by removing the headstones. WHAT? ! So, yes my research found that the bodies of Ventura residents from the 1800-1900 are still inhabiting the soil. Honestly, this doesn't creep me out it actually makes me sad that we don't honor the dead. I would feel much better if it wasn't a dog playground and perhaps had more updated information honoring the veterans buried there as well as the past city members. Feels like the city has missed a historical opportunity. read more

My bulldog Roxy and I frequent this lovely park a few times a week. We enjoy the large, grassy area, convenient trash cans with poo-bag stands, a few trees to provided shade if needed, and a few benches for your fanny too. The other dog owners are pretty friendly and keep a watchful eye on their dog; some even clean up after eachother's dog's droppings too. There isn't any water source, so bring a bowl and water if your dog will need it. There are no fences and leashes are required here, although that doesn't seem to be a necessity since most dog are well-behaved. Neighbors bring their kids to play with the dogs too, all in all a great community with proactive patrons. The sunsets are unbelieveable from this hill. Most dog owners come around sunset or just before it gets dark, so bring your (friendly, flea-treated) pooch and come join us! read more

This is an actual cemetery from the late 1800s. The view of the ocean is beautiful, and it is apparently repurposed as a dog park. There is no play equipment for kids and few benches. There is a lot of traffic nearby too with main street. There are many signs indicating off leash can result in fines in this park. Parking was easy, although side street parking is the only option available. read more
