A Stage Set for Fire and Flavor…read more La Casa de los Platos, a massive restaurant set along a boulevard of equally grand dining halls in Guadalajara's upscale district, thrives on spectacle. Its open-air courtyard, framed by stone and saturated with color, hums with loud music and theatrical flair. The guacamole, made by hand at the table, embodies that performance. Avocados are crushed in a stone molcajete, and the spread arrives bright and tangy. Yet, it's complicated by unnecessary additions--cheese chunks and chicharrón--that crowd out the fruit's natural elegance. A mere five totopos felt stingy, though a sack of piping hot corn tortillas--generous, soft, and fragrant--rescued the moment. At a requested "level 3 of 10," the spice soared higher than expected, a jolt that overwhelmed rather than accented. The rib eye tacos with shrimp and bone marrow extended the show, grilled before us over roaring flames. They were hearty, flavorful, and undeniably filling, but also excessively oily. The flavors--shrimp's brine, marrow's depth, beef's richness--blurred into a dish trying to impress on too many fronts. It was delicious, yes, but a reminder that tacos often shine brightest in their simplicity. Later, a live mariachi band replaced the nightclub thrum, a refreshing turn toward tradition and warmth. Service was fine but forgettable, efficient enough without leaving an impression. In the end, La Casa de los Platos is a spectacle tailored for a high-heeled crowd seeking grandeur. The flavors are bold, the showmanship bigger still--but subtlety rarely takes the stage. #GuadalajaraEats #FoodCritique #LaCasaDeLosPlatos

My husband and I ate here last night. We have been vacationing in Mexico for 3 weeks and are…read moregetting out to a variety of areas and trying to experience Guadalajara fully. I'm just going to jump right in with what I didn't like. Overpriced to the point of literally ripping people off. They use a rolling menu on a chalkboard so you really can't reference prices. As we say down and they asked for our drink choices, I requested a menu. We were told there was no drink menu. Did we want a tequila or vodka drink? I didn't like that concept so I asked for a Pellegrino. Now, my husband wasn't paying very good attention and his abilities of energy perception are not as sharp. He instead asked for a "traditional" margarita on ice. The waiter said, "lemon?" My husband said, "Cadillac...on ice." Anyway, by the time we got our bill. The charges for the two margaritas were $1180 pesos, roughly $30 USD each. The only other thing equally as expensive was my husbands ribeye steak that came with a salad (it was sadly drenched in dressing and limp). We could see the pricing for the ribeye and $35-40 for that isn't unreasonable (the salad situation made it less valuable). Since we've been here we've visited a place called La Teqiila Cocina de Mexico on Avenida Mexico twice. The drinks are interesting, colorful, unique, and full of flavor. They are true mixologists bringing the beauty of Mexico and the experience of Tequilla and Mezcal to life while accompanying your meal. They do a great job of suggesting a drink to compliment your tastes, meal, and general desire to explore one of the reasons why people visit Guadalajara. The pricing at La Tequila goes like this: Los Chamucos Reposado - $173 pesos - $8-9 USD Margarita Cadillac (what hubby ordered here at Corazon) - $120 pesos $6 USD Mezcalita - $120 pesos Martini La Tequila - $130 Entire bottle of Mexican white wine - $710 -$35 USD Reasonable? Absolutely! We've eaten and enjoyed mixed drinks and wine at other places as well. Never have we been told there isn't a menu to see, nor charged $30 for what was a shot of tequila, ice, and drink mix. Customer beware of this place. If the atmosphere, employees, music, food, or anything could have justified the price I'd gladly tell you. It just doesn't add up here. Note to the business. Include a fine oil it butter for dipping your sourdough bread. When serving the grilled artichokes, supply a secondary dish to dispose of the leaves. When a customer is still eating their salad, do not rush their entree, set it under a warmer in the back or find better timing. If your customer clearly hadn't eaten any of the only side dish provided with their entree, ask them why not? We would have reminded you that my husband requested no dressing. He doesn't eat anything with creams or cheeses and this was drowning in something suspect. We asked for lemons for his salad. You have a blond-haired, female server that stood in the doorway and stared at us our entire meal. Highly uncomfortable and inappropriate. Please monitor these things. Your prices should reflect different behaviors and higher levels of service.
