I don't get to Tucson very often, but I do try to stop here whenever I am in town. I am a huge lover of photography and really enjoy walking through these galleries on U of A campus. They always have some nice exhibitions that change out every few months. Center For Creative Photography is free and open to the public. CCP is a research institution devoted to preserving the history of photography and is part of the university's Fine Arts Complex. In addition to their galleries, they have a lecture hall that is used for class lectures and a collection of print resources devoted to photography. You can park for free across the street on Speedway Blvd. Center For Creative Photography has a collection of over 100,000 images from more than 2,000 photographers. They were established in 1975. Photographer Ansel Adams is one of the founders and his work along with many other famous photographers are archived here. I subscribe to their email and enjoy viewing some of their collection online. CCP welcomes donations and offers an annual membership that helps keep this gallery free and open for everyone. read more

Great museum on university of Arizona campus . Took the trek to see the highly acclaimed Linda McCartney exhibited . Not disappointed . Very talented she had great talent and access. We popped in on a Saturday afternoon to view the Linda McCartney exhibit (of course). Parking was free across the street, and it was easy to find the building. The exhibit was free as well, and I loved that they had a free locker for my bag. Three frees just to start! The exhibit itself was beyond my expectations. They curated a wide variety of images that offered a little something for eveyone -- McCartney family photos, famous people, and other subjects all seen through Linda's eye. I heard a docent say this barely scratches the surface of what they have in the archives from her, so I hope this is the first of many exhibits of her work! read more

Any museum where 15 minutes is enough...well, it's very small potatoes. They have 2 galleries. One was closed when I was there. The displays are good, but it truly won't be a highlight of your trip. Saturday would be the best day to come, since parking is much easier. (They are closed Sundays). read more

I recently was here three days in a row to see a film series in the auditorium; I also saw the Louis Carlos Bernal exhibit. I had to pay $7 to park in a university garage one day, but other than that everything was free of charge. The films, sponsored by the UA Judaic Studies Department, were great. The Bernal exhibit was also worth seeing, though not as good as some past exhibits. The staff was friendly. This is one of the top photography museums in the world, although the emphasis is more on conservation than on exhibition. Still, while exhibition space is limited, the exhibits are often quite good. read more

Right now they are featuring W. Eugene Smith's pictures til March 2, 2024. He was a champion for those that had no voice and make known the pains of war, midwife hardships, the Minamata atrocities and so on. Thank you W.E. Smith for capturing what we needed to know. read more

This was my first time, I was Invited by a friend who is inspired by art and photography! Linda McCartney Retrospective, exhibit of her talent in photography and her history. That was incredible! I also learned a lot about the building and the exhibits to come I'll look forward to in September with world war 2. This place provides so much education and it's free! Parking on the weekends across the street behind seven eleven is free! If you bring bags or purses, they will provide you a locker at no charge. I spent 1 1/2 hours going through the cool building reading all about Linda McCartney, her life and looking at all the people she knew! What an inspiration! I think the little girl stuck in me just loved all her child pictures being children! Her husband always playing with the kids! She was full of life! read more

Kudos to University of Arizona! And thank you Ansel Adams, co-founder of the idea. Read about the 90,000 fine print photographs in the depository! Read that the major portion of Ansel's photos are here at the CCP too! We came! It is free! Campus cool! But I was disappointed not a one of Ansel's photos was on display. Ansel made a life photographing Yosemite and other natural wonders. We were anxious to see many of the places we have visited countless times, like Yosemite. I understand an Ansel Adams exhibit is forth coming - but we'll be back home in Portland. "CCP, please put some Ansel photos on the walls!" That is why we came! read more

PRO TIP: Although it says it's open, In reality only one small exhibit is open which is primarily a virtual slide show presentation with only a few photos. Not worth going to, or the cost of parking. Wait for the actual full exhibit space to open. read more

The exhibits are lovely but unfortunately the handicap parking situation is a nightmare. A word to the wise: if you have any trouble walking, or are in a wheelchair, do NOT visit here without trying to get a handicap pass. Even though there were handicap spaces within almost feet of the front door we were not allowed to park there (on a Tuesday morning in late June) because we had not CALLED AHEAD to get a specific pass. Parking is at least 4-5 blocks away in a garage and then you have to walk back to the building. Thus my reason for only three stars. read more

I can't believe I'm the first to review my college stomping grounds and former place of college employment. CCP, you hold a soft place in my heart. You gave me my professional start in my career in the arts, and you have North America's most kick @ss collection of photos. SERIOUSLY every one. If you go to U of A, you might think this is just a funky place for a class- but truly- there is something special here. Contemporary and Creative Photography would not exist with out help from this place. I used to come here pretty often when I was a student at the U of A. The Center for Creative Photography is pretty close (just thru the Speedway pedestrian underpass) from McClelland Hall where I had my business classes. It is completely free to visit and they have good air conditioning. So, it makes it the perfect spot to take a break between classes. The place is not huge but their collection is. So the pieces on display in the gallery rotate very frequently. They also often loan out some of their works to other museums and they have a strong partnership with the Phoenix Art Museum and a permanent gallery there as well. On a recent visit during homecoming weekend, they were showing "Performance: Contemporary Photography from the Douglas Nielsen Collection". I didn't much care for most of the works but overall the exhibit was quite interesting. It just goes to show how diverse the CCP is. read more

A hidden gem among the plethora of free things to do here in Tucson. On those hot Sunday afternoons, the center is opened (air con) and usually a fantastically curated show or shows, that are both visually appealing and informative. I go as often as I can even if I have already seen the show before, there is always news inspiration to glean. Just spend some time your next visit on campus, you will be happy you did. read more

As a bonafide recovering Art Bitch, I give this university gallery the blue ribbon award for kickassery! Truly a "hidden gem" (i hate that phrase) in Tucson, the collection and the revolving pieces never cease to impress me. I have brought almost every single tourist from the east coast to this gallery, including some photography professors, and they leave with snoooty mouths agape that in this pleasant little desert town resides a high-caliber, well manicured collection of the arts. I am always upset when I visit and I can't stop by this gallery-and don't miss out out on their catalogs, magazines, books, postcards and prints they have in the atrium as unique gifts/decoration. Did you know we have a world class photography museum on the campus of the University of Arizona? The only reason why it doesn't rate five stars is parking can be a challenge. You can take SunLink, Tucson's streetcar, to the campus. Ansel Adams chose the UA to house his photography collection. Richard Avedon is the current exhibit and well worth the trip. For us baby boomers you will recognize many familiar faces from our history. Today our photographers have photoshop. Back in the day it was the dark room. Highly recommend a visit. While you're on campus stop by the Special Collections building. They have interesting rotating exhibits too. read more

The sign remarking that the Center for Creative Photography has one of the largest collections of photo art in the world is deceiving for the casual visitor. Without a scheduled viewing, you are only able to visit the temporary exhibit. In my case this was a collection of work on love (fitting since we visited on Valentine's Day). The art in the exhibit didn't exactly speak to me (mostly modern nudes with computer editing), but for a free museum this is worth the visit. read more

A terrific resource if you love photography. If you're part of a group...and plan ahead you can request a showing of actual prints from the collection. I think it's probably for classes and other related groups, but you can also ask to join a group that's having a showing. We've done that twice and it was amazing! I love photography and was excited to see U of A had a gallery. My husband and I were walking around the campus and stopped in. The center was much smaller than I was expecting. We both enjoyed the interesting topographical images displayed and agreed to stop to see the next exhibit. It is totally worth a pit stop while on campus, but I wouldn't go planning on making an afternoon of it. read more

I planned to stop here on my way back to the airport from Tucson. I'm glad I didn't allot a whole lot of time for it. I had really hoped to see some Ansel Adams prints, but instead it was a different exhibit full of (this may sound ignorant of me) a bunch of pictures of naked women. It was a very small exhibit, and some guy followed me around the whole time - as if I would ever take anything off of the walls there. All in all, I was pretty disappointed by the current exhibit. read more

First of I'd like to say how nice of a campus UofA is. I was forced to go to this museum, so I came with my mentality of its going to be lame. Well boy i was wrong, the people who worked there were extremely nice, and seemed like they really cared about where they worked. Then you walk around to all the different photographs and it was just amazing all the intriguing photos by extremely talented people. When you first walk in you are saved from the hot humidity of the sun, and welcomed in by nice cool air condition. The people at the front desk point you to the right direction, and you begin your adventure into photography. There are 4 separate rooms with photo covering all of them, there are even some neat objects to look at in the glass containers. As you walk the environment is extremely peaceful. There are easily over 100 of photos taken by various of talented photographers. These photos are of various of places and different cultures from around the word, if you love photography then you should most defiantly check this place out! read more
