History

Established in 1937.

In 1937 Center Sports opened in downtown Worthington, MN, about an hour east of Sioux Falls, SD. In 1985, Harlan Handevidt purchased the store and in 1992, expanded the business to a second location in the Centre Mall in Sioux Center, Iowa. The store services over 60 schools and recreation departments throughout Southwestern Minnesota and Northwestern Iowa. Retail sales and services include athletic shoes, equipment, and apparel for many local athletic teams and individuals. Licensed Products are also available at Center Sports. A large selection of gifts and novelty items are carried for many teams. Trophies and awards are available at Center Sports, with on-site engraving services. Center Sports offers a full-service screen printing shop, and equipment repair. Special orders are welcomed and encouraged. We strive to keep pace with the times, but the friendly service and quality goods are just like they have always been!

Meet the Business Owner: Harlan and Pam H.

In 1971, Harlan Handevidt joined what was then known as Bob Lundgren Sporting Goods, working in Sales and as Retail Manager. In 1985, Harlan and his wife Pam purchased the store from Bob Lundgren, and in 1992, the Handevidts expanded their business to a second location in the Centre Mall in Sioux Center, Iowa. In 1995, the Worthington store made a move to a new downtown location on 10th Street, nearly tripling their retail space. At that time, both stores took the name Center Sports. Center Sports employees include daughter Elise G who manages the Sioux Center store, and daughter Jennifer H, who operates the screen printing division. Sheryl B, Pat W and Jaci J work at the Sioux Center locations. Long-time staff member Mark S, and Betty C and Gyan H work at the Worthington store, and Road Sales are handled by Dennis H. and Philip A. Part-time employees are hired from the ranks of the local high schools and colleges.
