I've been a proud member of the Groove Zone community for nearly two years now, and honestly, I can't say enough great things about the instructors and the entire program. Yolanda Thomas, the owner and lead instructor, is a force of nature--an incredibly kind, passionate, and inspiring human who truly cares about every single person who steps through the studio doors. Her motto? "If you think you can't dance, I bet ya I can teach ya how to." (Spoiler alert: She can.) Thanks to Groove Zone, I've performed at two South Bay Lakers halftime shows and even hit the floor at a WNBA halftime performance at Crypto Arena--in front of 15,000 people. Yeah... 15,000. Never in my life did I think I'd perform in front of a live audience, let alone an arena crowd. It's the kind of rush you can't describe--and an experience most people never get the chance to have. The most recent one being helping a fellow mom take advantage of the "bring a friend to class" promotion the studio was running last month. The studio admin, Sydney, was great and handled everything! Sign ups for recitals are optional, so I did not know what to expect, but I certainly didn't think that my daughter was the only one from her class that signed up. My other guess is that not many other girls from that age group signed up either, as she had to perform with just one other student who she didn't know. It was not a long performance, which was to be expected. We're unsure as to why the littlest ones went first, as they set the tone for the rest of their peers, giving the impression that going up on stage has to be a daunting and traumatizing experience. It was my daughter's first time on stage, so I can't say it went fantastically, but I also can't put too much blame on anyone else for that. If anything, it just means she needs to have more classes so she can get better! Another mother observed this and shared she had a similar experience when her daughter first joined and Vivian allowed her to sit in the room. I told her that I had asked to be availed the same opportunity by Vivian before she shut the door in my/my daughter's face and said NO. The mother was actually shocked. For the business owner - you should advise Vivian that she's dealing with CHILDREN and she's not training the next principal dancer of the NYC Ballet. Crazy and terrible. I have gone to almost 20 different acting schools both in England and the United States and I can say, with total confidence, that Max Decker at MAD Acting Studio is the most brilliant teacher with whom I have ever had the pleasure of studying. It took one evening in class with Max for me to instantly mourn all the money I realized I had honestly wasted studying under teachers who, at the end of the day, just spent endless hours pontificating nothing more than their love for the sound of their own voice. Teachers who, if they worked as actors at all, had maybe had one or two jobs in their entire "careers" and felt that was enough for them to call themselves teachers. Max has not only worked in this industry a long time and accrued an enviable resume, he really knows how to teach others to do this thing really, really well. He won't blow smoke up your skirt and always say how great you to keep you spending money to stay in his class. He will actually -teach- you to be a better actor. He will call you out on what's getting in your way and offer invaluable, constructive help. He offers a wide range of classes including: * Dramatic improvisation (not going for the joke, but giving you invaluable tools you can use for your scripted work), * Script analysis, and * How to successfully audition and self-tape If you currently find yourself in a class where you feel you're spending a bunch of money to not really learn anything new or, if you're looking for a place that will finally teach you the tools you need to be a better actor, MAD Acting Studio is the place you need to go.
