I wanted to go in just to pay a visit but wanted to arrive at an appropriate time to check it out. My wait finally ended as this temple was having a yard sale. I took the opportunity immediately not only to go to the sale but to admire the area as well. I briefly took some pictures of some beautiful statuary and the buildings. The garage sale was very impressive! All kinds of different clothing and other household items to browse through. Such a great selection! I don't know if this garage sale is held every year here at this temple but if you ever do see one be sure and drop by!

I had a friend who was a Theravada monk and had been teaching over in Tacoma. In 1996 he said I ought to come over to Seu Mi Sa to take that five precepts with some of his students. I thought this was going to be a small private affair. I failed to realize it was the late April day when Buddhists celebrate the Birth, Enlightenment and Entrance to Nirvana by Buddha. There were hundreds of people there including the mayor of Tacoma and Mike Lowrey, the Governor of Washington. The temple has an interesting history. It is a Korean Zen temple. It was built by a donation from a wealthy Korean businesswoman. The Temple Building was originally in Korea. It is quite old and was dismantled and shipped to the US and reassembled. It is entirely made of wood and has no metal nails or bolts holding it together. The interior and exterior are very ornate and there are hundreds of small donated Buddha images inside. There is a meditation hall in the hill under the temple. The grounds around temple include the monks quarters and a large meeting hall for meals and other activities. After the ceremony I received a certificate in Korean and Chinese and I was given a Korean name. This was followed by a vegetarian meal in the assembly hall.

She is great at interpreting the meaning of scripture and how we can apply it to our every day lives. The congregation is small, pretty much all elderly folks, so not a lot going on, but definitely room for someone to get involved and volunteer if that's your gift. One good thing they do is the after school program for children on Wednesdays. Great outreach, giving children a meal and a safe place to do homework and other activities before the parents are able to pick them up. Good little neighborhood church if you don't want to travel to far for church.

After finally getting a call, I had only 3 hours to get to an intake appointment and was later instructed to get a homelessness verification within 48 hours, which I did. Despite this, I never heard back. A month later, I visited the office again, met a new manager who put me in a hotel for 2 weeks. When I needed more time, I couldn't reach her; her line was disconnected, and the office was vacated. My newborn and I were stuck in the car, seeking help from various organizations with no success. Eventually, I got in touch with a tiny home village but had to wait. After months, I finally got a new case manager who found me an apartment, but it had roaches. I found another place, got approved, and moved in after 8 years of homelessness, jail, and treatments. But soon, I was transferred to a new agent for missing a one-on-one meeting. I had to start the intake process again, despite being in the program for over a year. Their unprofessionalism wasted my time and caused immense stress. Advocate for yourself, because they won't. Read the intake packet thoroughly before signing. They don't care about your stability or success.

At Urban Grace, everyone was very warm, caring welcoming to me - even though I was a stranger. They immediately invited me to a few social events and really opened themselves up to me. One year later, I am surrounded by some fantastic, warm, funny and wonderful friends every time I go there. I am very pleased with the way this worked out and how God's grace is really flowing through the Urban Grace community. I highly recommend Urban Grace church if you are looking for a great place, filled with people who care; who are living and breathing God's love and grace to others.

The service was confusing. People of the congregation were not friendly even during "Passing of Peace", they only passed peace with their friends. Do not wear church Sunday clothing but everyday wear, even the Pastor wears causal clothing, I was truly overdressed. I might attend Bible Study, to give it another try. But I do not believe I will attend Sunday service unless I get up late because the service starts at 1030. Although you attend church to focus on Jesus, the spirit of the Lord needs to be in the midst.. which is my opinion. So, please remember to dress causal and come with friends.
