I know what you must be thinking: church... in a bar? Yes, that's exactly what it is.
You may find this idea strange, but I see it as a perfect depiction of God's infinite wisdom and incredible sense of humor. Have church in a bar to reach the unreachable. Instead of spending millions of dollars on a building the church can't afford, just let the liquor sales pay for the building. Put the money collected into the community where it's needed most. The dress code is come-as-you-are. You can get dressed up if you want to, wear shorts and a t-shirt, or even wear your bathing suit under your sun dress. If you think about it, this whole concept of having church in a bar seems a little more Jesus-like than a fancy building, snooty members, and giving pennies on the dollar to those in need.
It is absolutely a totally legit church service. The sermons are straight out of the Bible and applied to life in today's society. They have the best music around and fantastic preachers and speakers. If you want to check it out before going, you can listen to their sermons online, which they post on You Tube and share on their Facebook page for Flora-Bama Church.
It doesn't matter what denomination you are affiliated with, you are sure to enjoy the service. I'm a former Methodist. I've been twice and I listen to the sermons online. I thoroughly enjoy the sermons and music. My son, who doesn't really enjoy going to church the way he once did, enjoys going to the church service there. We had friends in town last weekend who went with us. They attend an Assembly of God church, and they admitted to me after the service that they were initially a bit skeptical, but thought it was one of the best sermons they've heard in a long time.
If you're in town during Christmas or Thanksgiving, they host a potluck lunch. This past Christmas, we got together with some friends and decided to forego the messy kitchens and go to the community potluck. When we pulled up in the parking lot and were getting our dishes out of the car, a lady pulled up next to us and asked about it. It really touched my heart as I had that gut feeling that she would have spent Christmas hungry and alone if not for the Flora-Bama's community potluck. That's outreach, folks. That's what churches are supposed to be all about.
If you're down here on vacation, they ask that you not throw away your unopened food. Instead, text "Donate" to 251-616-2262, and they'll send someone to pick it up for the local food pantry.
Whether you're a local, a snowbird, or just here on vacation, I highly recommend visiting the Flora-Bama Church. read more
