First time in on a Saturday. The meat counter was very busy. The line moved but it took some time. Love being able to get special sausages, linguica, mild and hot Italian sausage in a long cord. They cook on the grill and serve so much better. Very friendly and respectful employees. Even though it was tough for the employees to walk around to replenish the open fridges with all the customers in their way, you only heard respectful "excuse me, thank you". Folks we have visited this store for maybe 25+ years and now we live more than a hour away and still make the trip ever other month or so. Even though we have another place closer - they can't beat Central Meats. The meats have always been outstanding. I'd recommend the Delmonico steaks if you're looking for a real treat. But really no mater if we bought pork, beef or chicken everything has been better then the chain supermarkets. I'd also suggest going online and getting a coupon for a buy one get one free of their BBQ. Saves you about $8 and then you can a heck of a BBQ meal one night. As for service: on the weekend or holiday week, it can be a bit chaotic but the staff do real good at getting folks through. It's been awhile but I have also had them process a few deer that I've harvested during the season. Alway seemed to be a fair price and with a quick turn around. So if you're looking for a real butcher shop with great products - go ahead a shop here. You won't be disappointed. read more

Great place found items you can't find anywhere in Virginia. Definitely going back to get all my beef pork products in there.

Only place in the area that carries boudin sausage, thank goodness it's consistently good! We buy about 7 lbs every couple months and make a giant batch of boudin balls. The consistency of the boudin is good, could have more liver in it, but it's good. Prices of some of the meat is high when compared to other places. However, the cuts are usually great. No sloppy butchering here. You can find great deals. They can get really busy and will run out of the specialty sausages. So, plan accordingly. read more

Good selection. Prices are high like everywhere. Might not return because every time we go the employees we have dealt with are very rude. Today there was a younger emo type girl who was extremely rude. Don't understand why someone who clearly hates dealing with the public works in a job dealing with the public. She acted annoyed that she had to actually do her job. Hopefully she finds employment elsewhere, either by choice or not. read more

We were having guests for dinner, and wanted to serve pot roast. We checked prices for Chuck roast at all local grocery stores (8.99/lb) and central meats (6.99/lb) wife said to buy 9 lbs of chuck roast. They were extremely well trimmed, so I decided to only get 6 to 7 lbs. Pot roast was great. Quite flavorful, and we had significant left overs. We have bought brisket, ribs, chickens and steaks there before. Oh, and their Dino ribs, wow they were great out of the smoker. It's a butcher shop, that also has grocery shelving with the normal stuff plus a very latge selection of spices and prepared BBQ rubs and sauces. They also have dried pig ears, and beef bones for the pets. Did I mention they make their own sausage. read more

Spices that are hard to find with competitive prices. The butchers at the counter are always ready to assist and answer a question. Great options and decent prices. We purchased a tray of the whole hog pulled pork and it was $50 for 5 lbs and it was very tasty and tender. Also purchased lots of chicken quarters and thighs at good prices per pound. Looking forward to going back for some steaks this summer. read more

My mother is a school nurse for the city of Chesapeake. She drove 25min to get to central meats before they close at 5pm. She walked up to the meat counter and waited in line like everyone else. It's finally her turn and Kelly refuses to slice her steaks for her because "it's too late" and gave her a mess of attitude. They JUST helped the man in front of her. It was 4:40. Maybe update your hours or train your staff to do the job correctly. God forbid the working class tries to come after a long day and get their groceries. I've been a customer for over 15 years... Started coming here after receiving horrible service at a butcher shop I've been going to by the PA Farmer's Market. Thank goodness that happened because I was able to find this amazing place! Walked into Central Meats and was in awe at how big this place was compared to the old place I went to. I was greeted by a polite young lady and she helped me out with what I needed to buy. Since it was my first time, they gave me a free pound of pork of my choice. I ended up getting some fresh ground round and then maple breakfast sausage as my freebie. Both super delicious!! The people in the butcher section answered all of my questions. I've referred my family to Central Meats and we all love their food. They also have turkey legs which is awesome because I've only ever had big turkey legs from Busch Gardens. Glad to know I can get them here. I live about 15-20 minutes from Central and less than 2 minutes from the old butcher shop and I will gladly make the trip here every time I need meat products! Huge store, haven't even explored half of it but I am looking forward to coming back! read more

A little expensive in my opinion but if your looking for tomahawk steaks, big lamb chops, and sausage galore, this is your place. The quality of the meat is impeccable however I have encountered rude employees especially in the meat counter line. My most 2 recent visits I observed an employee being rude to customers asking customers to be more specific about the cuts of meat there asking for in a condescending like tone. So now I make sure before I order at the counter I have the cut the quantity, and any other specifics ready when I get up there to avoid that bad interaction with the employees. Besides all of that, I love that they sell bones and things for dogs, as well as different seasonings and rubs for meat, which ultimately makes it a one stop shop for me. read more

I stopped in this Labor Day weekend on Saturday around 4:45 to find the place absolutely packed, which speaks to their popularity. We aren't huge meat-eaters, but I do stop in once in a while when we want something nice to grill out or will be having guests for a larger meal. My experiences, service-wise here, have previously been prompt and efficient. They clearly know what they're doing. Prices are good compared to local markets and stores. The items we've purchased have always been tasty and fresh. Most recently we've had sirloin steaks, chicken breast and thick-cut boneless pork chops. I was disappointed, this past weekend, when I observed a customer interaction that left a very sour taste in my mouth. A young lady was in line at the butcher counter and was very clearly on an errand for someone else. She was reading the ordered item from her phone to the woman working at the counter who very rudely kept responding to her "I don't know what you're asking" "What exactly does she want" "Well there are 3 types of (loin?)" "You have to be more specific" - any of these responses would be fine, but the tone of her voice, especially to a young lady who was just trying to shop for someone else, was incredibly demeaning and derogatory. I grabbed something from the case and quickly checked out not wanting to encounter this person in the butcher line. Central Meats is good for pricing, quality and selection, but none of these matter if you can't show kindness to your customers. I'll think twice before I return. read more

Central Meats is a great spot for quality meats. This was my first time going to a butcher shop & I enjoyed my experience. The building was packed so I could tell it was a popular place to be. There was a variety of fresh meats to choose from as well as seasonings and bbq sauces. At Kroger, 4lb pack of chicken wings was $17 the last I saw, so this was a deal for me to find a 3lb for $9.61! I got reccomended this place for turkey for Thanksgiving. I placed my order ahead of time as instructed and my turkey was ready for pick up the day I asked. From that point on, I've been getting meats from here. The reason I am giving 4 stars is because I wish the precut steaks they sell were wrapped better. I expect this from the service counter but not precut ones. If you buy steaks and other meats from here, regardless of what area of the store you get them from, be sure you repackage them when you get home. Especially if you don't plan to cook them right away! read more

Longtime butcher store on Kempsville Rd offering fresh quality meats and prices that range from good to somewhere in the middle. The meat selection and counter service are rare these days and greatly appreciated. Recently, I stopped in for chicken quarters. They were $.89/lb and they tasted great. So many beef and pork options to choose from as well, but certain cuts run out. One concern is the wrap isn't done right on all their packages so chicken juice leaks out everywhere from store to home which isn't sanitary or safe. read more

Wow. We came here on a Saturday afternoon in search for some raw beef bones for bone broth. Everyone there was super friendly and helpful. They had all types of seasonings, a large assortment of deli meats including turkey, salami, ham, and also hot dogs, sausage, vegetables, and other meats. Their beef is all grass fed. Have not been here in years, but my son wanted to make smash burgers and wanted "fresh" meat from the butcher. The ground beef was just beautiful. All their meats were. The place was packed.
