Social Work Director lied and got mad I went above her head as she was clueless about what classes I needed as I was a returning older student. She told me I had 23 credits left and gave me a schedule of remaining classes that I had begun taking. After spending thousands of dollars and getting an 4.0 in the classes I was told to take. The director at the time said she was confused if I needed to retake classes. I went over her head and found out I did not. She got very embarrassed and mad and said I would have to retake every class and instead of 23 credits it would take 3 years to graduate. read more

DON'T APPLY IF YOU'RE AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT! The faculty, professors and the local students here are extremely prejudiced, conservative and discriminating. Some professors are very under qualified, and has no idea what they are teaching. Overall vibe here is very depressing and dull, noting to do around Mount Pleasant, bunch of weed shops, cultist churches and unwelcoming townies, which makes you never want to leave your room. Extremely isolating environment. The faculty and students treat international students very horribly, and management does not take such concerns seriously. read more

The financial aid office is going to be the reason that many students withdraw from CMU and take their money elsewhere. I had a representative "Shelby" be disgustingly rude to me just because I asked her name, at the beginning of the call. Where I'm from, that's no more than standard formality and courtesy. They don't like to give their names because they know how rude and unprofessional they are, and they don't want to be personally held accountable for their behavior. The same thing happened with a guy named Walker, in billing. Downright nasty and rude, without reason. He didn't feel like looking up "publicly posted" information for me, yet I had him to do his job anyway. Both calls were captured because I called from my work line. If I were them, I'd be careful with how I spoke to people. I could make these calls public to the media/ social media, or make sure their superiors or the dean knows what's going on in these departments. read more

I've had my first semester of college here and I'm transferring out to a different one due to my experiences here at central. The people and atmosphere are not as welcoming as they place it to be on their online orientation videos and website, or other promotions. The atmosphere feels unwelcoming to people with different opinions, no matter how inclusive they try to say it is. Many ideas feels shoved down your throat if you have a different opinion than others and have staples around every corner, including in dorm buildings. The gen Ed English courses are also controversial and are much more one sided, feeling as if I need to "swing" a certain way to get a good grade. Mount pleasant in general is not a pleasant area to be in. There are the select few people I have met that have been kind; otherwise, many rude experiences have piled up over the semester. Coming here, there have been many ethical issues for myself, causing me to leave and never coming back. I do not recommend whatsoever. On the sidewalks walking to campus there would be illustrations and phrases of derogatory words and opinions, covering up other writings that were previously there that were for club promotions or organizations on campus. These would have to get washed down every few days due to the disturbances and controversies it would cause on campus. Also, in front of my dorm there have been dumpster divers that ride their bikes to the large dumpster on the side of the building with bags and a fishing pole. There have been a few times that I will throw out my trash and they are both there digging in the trash and recycles. This is a very uncomfortable experience I've had and there seems to be no control over it. There are many campus patrol and cops that ride around, and it is hard to believe that they have never been noticed before or that this behavior has been allowed to continue. I have been flat out lied to by university staff, and then when I point out the fact that they lied to me they try to gaslight me. Instead of investing in something like more parking spots the university's priority is another multi million dollar building that they don't need. Central Michigan University is the last place I would consider allowing my child to attend. The school in general is looking to gain a bigger following at the moment so they are reaching out to high schools from all backgrounds trying to gain more "ethnic" students. The lack of any care for the students once they arrive on campus is evident. They have created many groups to give the appearance of diversity but it's more like clubs where all ethnicities can be with others who look like them but no actual diverse interactions. Classes: Joke classes all throughout the campus, coming from a person who switched majors several times. The teachers are really there to give point of views as well as give you assignments they haven't even thought twice about. It's all structured by the book education, and if that's what you prefer then maybe you will like it. Dorms: The worst dorms are all over campus, their isn't a good building except the Towers. Mold is almost in every students bathroom across campus which is attempted to cover up with paint and etc. Rules at the dorms have gotten stricter since the shooting incident, but they also have taken it a bit far. Police enforcement is very heavy now which causes them to stay on the defense about all students. Don't expect anything from RA/MA assistants, they are here for the free room & board. Campus Food: Awful food, forget whatever they offer to eat to the parents at orientation it's the catering company. You really have to work with some things they offer and make it your own if you can. Everything is pretty much buffet style, but meals change daily 3x a day. The entire menu on campus in all dinners consist of the same 30-40 choices all year. The repetitive meals are noticeable before the next semester even comes. read more

It's inhumane to expect students to walk to class in a dangerous hypothermic sub zero storm. Currently there are near white out conditions, and it's only 8:49 in the morning. If I could give zero stars I would. I took 2 classes via distance learning for professsional development. The problems I have had afterward trying to get my transcripts sent have been horrific. The school also charged an inordinate amount in additional fees after the classes were completed. I'm still dealing with this three months after my classes were completed. I have lost a job I badly needed because my license couldn't be renewed until they posted the transcripts. Their response "I'm sorry you didn't understand the packet you were sent that explained this". (There was no packet sent). Truly horrible experience. AVOID IF AT ALL POSSIBLE!! read more

I strongly suggest that you don't attend Central Michigan. I only had 20% (1 of 5) professors teach classes live even after vaccines were readily available. The Central Michigan professors do poorly in teaching online. They read the slides over Zoom and have limited real world examples to help you understand the material. I asked my tax class professor for better resources to understand the material and she said "read the book". I paid room & board and food plan costs to be taught by one professor. There was a shooting at a Central Michigan apartment and one of the football players almost got killed. Central Michigan is not a good school. read more

I absolutely loved my time at Central! This campus is beautiful and has a lot of history behind it. My favorite part was the way that Central Michigan could make a population of over 20,000 feel homey and welcoming. Campus is easily walkable in 15 minutes and there are always smiling faces around. Even now as I have moved out of state I regularly run in to CMU graduates and we fondly give one another a quick, Fire Up Chips! read more

I am a grad of CMU, and found it to be an excellent school. It can be very difficult like any school, but if you study and attend class regularly you will do well. This is a great college town with an excellent sports program. I feel I received an excellent education and was a great value. I was able to graduate in 4 years, which was a plus. I feel you will get out of CMU what you put into CMU. Most of the girls are smoking hot and that was another plus in my book. Central has one of the best wrestling programs in the country and has beaten both MSU and MIchigan regularly for the past 10 years or so. Give CMU a chance and I think you will love it!! read more

Fire up CHIPS!!!!! CMU was so good to me. - Academics: I was an education major. And CMU has long been known for it's roots as a teaching college. - Socialization: there is a niche here for every student to fit into. There's a club, a Greek organization, a team, a SOMETHING for you. One of my biggest regrets is that I didn't have the time to explore more of the student organizations, even though the ones I was a part of were great. - Administrative: I'm convinced you won't find friendlier or more helpful people than the folks working at CMU. Whether I contacted offices for academic counseling, issues with tuition, class scheduling, anything....my questions were always answered quickly and promptly. Sent an email or left a voicemail? I'd have a response from either within an hour. - Facilities: some buildings are newer, some older. As with any school, they are always in the process of adding a new this-or-that. Even the older dorms and buildings that are a little outdated still have great character, and we were never lacking for any resources or technology we needed for our courses. Since graduating, I've had the pleasure of visiting some of the newly build buildings (especially the new education building) and NICE is an understatement. State of the art technology, modern design and furnishing...a damn fine learning environment indeed! - Faculty: I had not one, but a number of professors who were like adoptive parents to me through my time in college. Most of the profs I encountered were not only knowledgeable, accessible, and caring, but also currently active in their field. They KNEW their stuff, and made sure I left knowing it too. I couldn't be happier with the time I spent here. I made wonderful memories, formed lasting relationships, and recieved a great education that has served me well in my current career path. Central is known throughout Michigan as a bit of a party school, a reputation I honestly think it earned a long time ago and just seems to have stuck. To be honest, every university with a significant amount of students who live on or near campus is a party school. Part of the reason CMU's party school reputation remains is the simple fact that, if you didn't say it was a party school then what would you call it? It's plopped down right in the middle of nowhere, without much to do in the area that isn't a full 30 minute drive away. Sure, there's Soaring Eagle but beyond that, Mt. Pleasant is essentially without character. The bar scene is mediocre at best and there just isn't a lot to do. So you party. All that aside, the academic programs aren't terrible but they aren't great either. Many of the professors teach from the academic "I've studied this subject for decades" point and not the "I've actually done this stuff and done it well" point. There are, of course, brilliant and successful exceptions and they're a welcome breath of life into the doldrums of some of the programs here. One thing to note about Central is that, in order to succeed in most businesses, students have to throw themselves into as many internships as possible and because of the location (again, middle of nowhere) it's nigh impossible to intern throughout the year in many fields. There are a lot of students here and not a lot of businesses around to take them on as apprentices. Expect to get minimal internship experience during the summer, when you're far away from CMU. The student population is friendly and Greek life is ... well ... Greek life. As for sports, it's a sad fact that most of the tailgaters don't bother leaving the parking lot which, believe it or not, most sports fans look down upon. It's trashy behavior to show up because you needed an excuse to start drinking early in the morning. Sure, have a good time in the lot, get rowdy, and get drunk but go in and watch the G-D game for chrissake. To finish this thing up, Central is a mediocre school. Oh, I know a lot of the student body just loves it there. I don't understand why though, it seems like everyone I met there wanted to get into State or Michigan but either couldn't make the cut or couldn't afford the cost. Students will tell themselves it's great, one of the best in the state but the reality is that CMU is currently fighting a battle with Western for the #4 slot for universities in Michigan (sorry folks, Wayne has a lock on #3 thanks to its technical, law, and medical school) and I'd argue that Western is winning, making CMU the fifth best non-private uni in the state behind WMU, WSU, MSU, and Uof M. read more

A lot of us felt a slight bit of envy toward nearby art schools, but after I entered the work world and met a lot of other people, I can say that Central Michigan University is underrated. I'm giving my alma mater five stars. I was a journalism major back in 2006 and while it's tough to find good places to be published in the mid-Michigan media market, the professors in the journalism department did a good job preparing students for the world of news reporting. The campus is at its most beautiful in the fall. In the winter, the temperature drops to the negatives, but facilities management is on top of things and they have the sidewalks plowed before 8 a.m. biology 101 in Brooks Hall. The Park Library is one of the best public university libraries in the country - easily. Central is more of a football school than a basketball school even though either program is elite at this point and probably never will be. The only complaint I could have about Central Michigan is its limited number of graduate degree programs. The university has a ton of bachelor-degree programs, but you have to go down the road to Michigan State if you want a master's degree or doctorate in anything else. This school is overpriced but it appears to have a decent staff...It may be easy to get in like a monkey on crack but to stay and succeed is another thing. I see a mix of serious students and too many beer breath pigs. Seeing lazy pig sweatpants is also a norm it seems like some would at least comb there hair for class. read more
