History

Established in 1741.

We worship on Sundays at 9 a.m. (Old Chapel) and 11 a.m. (Sanctuary) from September - May and at 10 a.m. (Sanctuary) June - August. Please join us! Central Moravian Church began as the city of Bethlehem was founded in 1741 by Moravians who came to share the Gospel with the Native Americans of this area. The Saal was the central place of worship in 1742 for the early inhabitants of the Bethlehem community. It is located on the second floor of the Gemeinhaus or community house (today it is part of the Moravian Museum). Near the corner of Heckewelder Place and Church Street, the 1751 Old Chapel served as the place of worship for the community for the next 55 years until the community was concerned that they needed a larger church to meet their future needs. The Old Chapel is still used for our 9 a.m. worship services, weddings and memorial services. On April 16, 1803 the cornerstone was placed for a new sanctuary and completed in 1806, it seats about 1200.
