I am not foolish enough to expect peak customer service at Centrelink so dread the prospect of having to go in and only do so with low expectations. Even so, my expectations take a beating and are lowered every time I have the displeasure. Every two or three times I go in their computer system seems to be down, and having worked in retail for several years myself, I understand that this sets the staff up for a day of non-stop customer complaints and am prepared to give them all my patience and understanding. Last time this happened, my efforts to be nice meant I was not taken seriously, it seems not listened to at all. My payments were cut off as a result and it took several hours on the phone to have the problem rectified. More recently, I tried explaining that one of my enquiries didn't actually need a computer, so could I please... and was cut off with "how are we supposed to do that without a computer?" As I tried to answer the question, I was cut off again. I tried asking two more staff members and had the same response. They were being bombarded with questions and complaints from every side so I tried to make concessions for the bad day they were having, though in hindsight it would've been more effective to be a horrible bitch. On top of the rudeness and unhelpful nature of the staff, a grumpy old customer kept interrupting, and after the third time I turned to him and said, "excuse me, I was asking this lady a question and you were behind me in the line," at which point the staff member looked at me as though I was the spawn of Satan. I suspect Centrelink staff are trained to be as rude, unhelpful and incompetent as possible with computer crashes scheduled weekly in a bid for the government to pay out fewer benefits. I for one would certainly never go there if I didn't absolutely have to and recommend you don't either. read more
