A decent train station if not great. The station itself is a little hard to navigate and feels pretty old. The renfe club was an unexpected treat though, so if you book a ticket that includes access, don't hesitate to visit the lounge. They have a wide variety of treats including gluten free and vegan food and beers. As we had a long flight coming in and a long train ride ahead of us, that was a nice respite. Boarding at the station is similar to pretty much any other and for us, the walk was not far at all, although it did look like some trains could be more difficult to get to. We also took another train to Toledo a bit later in our trip and the experience was very similar. That platform was a bit more of a walk into the station and it was considerably more difficult to find out platform, but after having done it once, it would be simple the next time. read more

Went from Madrid to Barcelona. Took about 3 hrs with 3 stops enroute. We purchased their version of First Class which was definitely worth it! More leg room,quiet coach car,comfortable seating and hot meal with beverage service all included. You also get access to their Club Room in the train station which we were not aware of until it was too late. There are two other train companies that use this space so it was slightly confusing at first. The Renfe customer service lobby (in Purple) is off to the side and you need to take a number before heading to counter. Renfe departures are up on level 1 where you will need to screen luggage. Once you pass through luggage screening there are a few last minute concessions and waiting area (no chairs) as patrons awaiting their platform # to be displayed. Wow! I've commonly passed through the Atocha metro stop but this was my first time taking the train. The Renfe station is so pretty with its beautiful indoor garden area! Super easy to pass through to jump aboard a train. We were on a short journey to Toledo, but there were many trains traveling all across Spain! Train travel is so easy in Europe and a great way to see the sights without the hassle of the airport. Although our train left late, we still arrived quickly and close to on time. Once we returned back, it was easy to jump on the metro to head to our destination. It's recommended to purchase your tickets in advance which is easy to do online. Visiting from America, we decided we wanted to ride a train from Madrid to Barcelona, or Valencia to a beach that's located of the coast of Spain. We approach the window to order our ticket and the women goes, no more tickets sorry in Spanish, then raised her voice twice to say I no speak English. We approached the kiosk cause something wasn't right and the kiosk says the tickets are available but she refused to sell them to us. We then re-approached the counter where a younger girl who spoke English and Spanish assisted us. The tickets were able and we able to be on our way. The second girl was amazing in assisting us. However, the elderly lady was a little mad and refused to allow us to ride a train. read more

Buy your train tickets on-line. The ticket office had seven booths but only two cashiers working. The other ticket offices at this station, also had long lines and no staff. The line is worst than a DMV office. the long line moves at a decent pace if you are patient because most customers leave out of frustration. Other customers just walk up to the desk because they are tired of waiting and cut in front of anyone and everyone with complete disrespect for those who have been patiently waiting. Once your number is called, the service is fairly efficient and friendly. The dining and shopping options at this station are minimal. I wasn't very fond of this station due to the fact of being non informative. A good thing is that the trains are almost on the minute on time for departures. The bad thing is that the platform number wasn't displayed on the screen until 10 minutes before departure. The signs aren't very clear. read more

What a cool train station! With so much to do. So if you have to wait for a train, you won't be bored! And lots of cafes to sit and have a coffee. There are market stalls to browse, there is a huge jungle garden inside. You can watch the heaps of turtles in the little pond. So 5 stars alone just for things to do. There is nothing worse then being early for your train... and having nothing to walk around and see. You won't have that problem here. If it's your first time taking a train from this location, stop by a bit early so you can see the gardens! read more

Terrible customer service. Had to wait an hour to talk to someone. Was trying to book 2 tickets with an inter-rail pass to France. We had the booking names and times we needed and the woman "helping" out in no effort to communicate with us about the tickets. She found our first two bookings and we paid for them. Did not try to problem solve when she only found one ticket at a time we wouldn't make for our connection. We tried to explain where we were trying to go and it would be 3 connections to get there. We had up on the app and website the later train we needed to connect and she handed us our two tickets we paid for getting us only partway to our destination and shrugged. So now we are out 2 train tickets and only getting halfway where we need to be. read more
