    Kids @ CFS Jiu Jitsu

We love CFS! My sons are pretty new to BJJ, but they got hooked on the first class. Coach Earl is the perfect balance between discipline and care for our children, and we cannot be more happy about enrolling him in this class. We are looking forward to the kids progress under Coach Earl's mentorship. It's only been a month and we can already see an improvement in their self confidence and defense techniques.

Great team - all levels of BJJ

It is truly difficult to write a review for this place - simply because there are so many good things to say, it is going to come off as over the top and unbelievable. My daughters have been training with Coach Earl and have been a part of the CFS team for 6 years (next month), and it has had a profound impact on their personal development, growth and of course BJJ skill. I was always afraid that training in such a physical martial art would make them MORE aggressive, and in fact, it has been the complete opposite. They are LESS aggressive, are able to handle themselves in physical situations, and have a level of confidence i rarely see in other young girls their age. What more could a dad ask for? The team at CFS is a family - such a great group of people. Everyone wants to see everyone else do better, and the positivity is infectious. There are various levels, from beginner to expert, from hobbyists to nationally ranked competitors. There are a lot of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu programs in orange county - but you would be hard pressed to find a better program - from the quality of the instructor (4th degree black belt with 25+ years experience), to the other members of the gym and the overall friendly and welcoming environment. I recommend this BJJ gym for kids of any age, men or women who have experience, or are just starting out - there is something for any demographic here. Looking forward to seeing you on the mats some time soon!

I am by no means a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) expert, but due to my frequent work relocations, I have had the opportunity to train at multiple different gyms throughout the country. This has afforded me an opportunity to witness many different BJJ coaching styles. I can wholeheartedly say Coach Earl's hands on approach to teaching is exactly what you should look for in your next BJJ gym. Coach Earl's caters his teaching style to meet the needs of the student's unique personality. Students that need a softer touch, with detailed explanations are given exactly that. While a student that may require encouragement to improve, will pushed by coach (and teammates) during training. CFS is also the gym with the highest number of female participants I have ever witnessed. This speaks volumes about the quality of Coach Earl's gym. At many BJJ gyms you will find zero female participants, these coaches are unable or unwilling to tailor to the needs of women. I would recommend this Gym to any level of BJJ practitioner. If you've never tried BJJ come in and experience a couple classes, it will be overwhelming at first but quickly you will see the reward that comes with chess like jiu-jitsu matches. I can guarantee you the CFS family will be welcoming and supportive.

    Excellent environment.

I have been practicing under coach Loucks for about 5 years. I absolutely love the classes. We practice practical classical BJJ. The system works flawlessly. The gym is super clean. Students are very pleasant. The environment is very family friendly. Fun Fun Fun environment. Highly recommended.

I finally took the first step and chose to try a class here one hot summer day 3 years ago. When I started looking at different gyms, most of them never revealed the price of membership. A lot of gyms want you to come in first and sit you down to discuss fees. However, when I looked at 10th Planet MV, I really appreciated the transparency of membership, which made it a no brainer to sign up for a trial class. My first day, I was welcomed with a handshake and introduction by Coach Matt. Big points since I've visited other gyms where the owner doesn't even acknowledge potential members. At first, I was nervous walking in at rooster weight seeing the big cats on the mat. As the class went on, I got more comfortable and realized my Muay Thai won't do well on the ground like Rodtang vs DJ. Everyone here is welcoming and takes care of each other. Coach Matt is great at explaining techniques that make it easier to learn even without prior martial arts experience. All the coaches here are happy to answer questions you may have. Coming here feels like going to your friend's house, where you feel welcomed and at home. Other gyms I've tried felt like going to your snooty aunt's house where you feel judged and compared to your cousin who just met a lawyer from Georgetown University who has a Condo in Maryland and they're getting married soon but delaying due to prior.... I'm getting off topic. Basically, 10th Planet MV is a great place to learn jiu jitsu whether you have no experience in martial arts or want to level up your existing skills. You will learn, you will be tested against yourself, and you will meet great people.

After…read moretraining in various disciplines I know how crucial a truly safe, ego-free, family-oriented spot is, so I watched classes for a week or two before jumping in. Glad I did--this place delivers. I've been training both No-Gi and Gi (mostly Gi here), attending the 6:00 AM sessions with competition purple belt Natasha Dillon. She's excellent: clear breakdowns, super informative, and always eager to teach, drill, or roll. I've also caught sessions with head instructor Chico Lima --my personal schedule doesn't always align, but he's kind, masterful, and drops those high-level details that elevate everything. From the classes I have attended they blend a sort of chain drilling for teaching techniques with resistance training and live rolling available every session. The chain drilling here goes way beyond the repetitive one-technique "monkey see, monkey do" teachings some places practice. It forces you to think through your options, adapt on the fly, and see the game from new angles. I personally love that depth; it makes training feel more dynamic and strategic. Mats are spotless, vibe is supportive and humble. I will write an update in a few months on my progress, training, and vibe etc. but I wanted to put this review out there because this is something I would have wanted to know when I was looking for a new training spot. Anyways if you're in looking for competitive-yet-kind training community where you can grow safely, check out RYSK. Highly recommend. -EZ

I couldn't move much for about a month so I watched a bunch of TV. When I was younger, I practiced martial arts, but I was always fascinated with Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. I started watching YouTube videos at home while injured and learned that there are different types of Jujitsu, sports jujitsu, and self-defense jujitsu. Sports jujitsu is aimed at competing with other Jujitsu practitioners. They tend to be injuries with this type of Jujitsu. There is more of a Competitive, ego. Driven aim to beat your opponent. And as I was just in the process of recovering from a serious accident, count me out. Gracie Jiu-Jitsu started in the United States in Torrance California. I called the Gracie University there and asked if there was anybody in my area. They referred me to Laguna Hills and Professor Arman. I called and talked to him, thinking that private classes might be best after I recovered from my injuries because my main concern was not being injured. He convinced me that the classes were designed specifically to avoid injury, and that I would be fine there. I decided to go in and meet him and check the place out. From the moment I walked in the door, everybody I met, were very friendly and nice. The instructors and students were having fun and everybody seemed like family. No pretense or anybody acting like a bad ass. Just normal people enjoying learning this art of self-defense, which is the only one where smaller people can routinely defend themselves against larger opponents. I came in and watched for three nights in a row, wishing I could take a class. But I was still very injured and fragile. One of the professors there, Lee, asked me if I wanted to try to learn one of the techniques. I told him that I was way too injured, and there's no way because I could barely even lay down. He reassured me. We could do something simple and he wouldn't barely touch me. Hesitantly, I agreed. A few minutes later, I was learning my first technique. Doing anything, standing, walking, or even sitting hurt at that point And what Lee taught me wasn't any worse than anything else. I was thrilled. I came back the next day and worked with some of the smaller students and women, still worried about doing anything much. I made everybody aware of my situation, and they were all understanding and everything I learned flowed smoothly. I've been going there for six weeks, and I'm almost pain-free. I never thought, at 70 years old, with multiple broken bones, that I could learn a martial art, and not worry about becoming injured. But it really follows the entire Gracie Jiu-Jitsu philosophy of teaching people without them having to worry about becoming injured. I now take between five and nine lessons a week, and am progressing rapidly in their very structured educational program. I plan on doing this for the rest of my life, partly because of this particular branch of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, instructors, the students, health benefits and the value that it adds to my life. So if you want to learn what Gracie Jiu-Jitsu is all about, this is the place to be. They have a free, 10 day program, just so people can come and see if they like it. If I can do this at my age, anybody can do it. They have a terrific bully-proof kids program for children five years old and up, and have coed programs for any age. Couldn't recommend it more highly.
