We were apprehensive about moving studios after arriving in Portland from Arizona. We loved our…read moreprevious studio and worried we'd never find anything as good. We were blissfully wrong!! Both my daughters have flourished under the current instruction at Inspire! All of the instructors have provided tremendous leadership and growth for my dancers. Can there be a rough day occasionally? Sure, but that's life! 99% of the time my girls come out of class having worked hard and had fun. This is definitely a pre-professional studio, and the dancers are treated as if this can be their profession after graduation. Their competitive teams are amazing, but I adore that the focus isn't only on competition. The technique classes are FAR more important. Participation in The Nutcracker is also a must! The girls do an amazing job, rivaling the professional shows downtown We look forward to it every year.

The dance instruction IS rigorous, but we found it to be anything but inspiring. A harsh environment is cultivated, and it is not at all unusual for students to be humiliated in class and made to cry. There are favored dancers, who are all in the highest level, and the levels below that are generally treated pretty harshly. There is a level of controlling-ness (for example, dictating across the board that all students must wear a certain brand of pointe shoes, regardless of what may work best for each individual student) that is ridiculous. My teenage daughter's confidence was pretty much destroyed during her time at Inspire; although she was accepted into three prestigious summer intensives, she believes that she's "a bad dancer" thanks to the messages she received at Inspire. Heavy on criticism, sometimes downright mean, skimpy on encouragement. I don't typically write Yelp reviews, but I feel compelled to share our experience on this one. We are relieved to be moving on from Inspire.

We rented lawn chairs. The walk to get into the venue was very long to get everyone into line to enter was a whole experience literally over the river and through the woods...lol. The line stretched a mile long. Teddy Swims was worth it. The parking was easy and we waited around afterwards so we wouldn't get stuck in traffic.

The last time I went (when they still allowed personal chairs) mine were confiscated for having too long of legs. We'd taken those exact chairs in before without issue. We saw other people with the exact same chairs we tried to bring, so their security people are totally inconsistent with enforcing rules. Then with no chairs, we stood during the concert. People yelled at us for blocking their view the ENTIRE show despite signs everywhere saying you're allowed to stand if you want. We decided to go again this summer and with the new rules, only beach towels are allowed. I measured my towels and they were the allowed size, 30x60! But then when we got to the security line, the guy stretched it out and decided it was too big. So once again I was left with nothing to sit on. I was pretty mad to see other people made it in with big blankets, which are specifically not allowed! Also, they used to ban chairs with legs because they blocked people's view but now the chairs you can rent have tall legs....so it's OK to block views as long as Mcmenamins is making money. It's just so ridiculous. They also charge twice the price for drinks you can get 20 feet away inside the main bars/hotel/restaurant.

They have a number of programs, like $25 tickets, Rush/Standby Tickets, Arts for All, Pay What You Will days. All very affordable! And for the quality of the shows here, it's absolutely worth it to go see at least one show a season. The stage crew and actors put on great shows! Every staff member I've encountered there have been friendly, patient and accommodating. I've done the Standby tickets for a few shows now and it's a great experience. Put your name on the wait-list about 90 minutes before showtime, go grab a bite to eat, and if you get a seat, that's great! If not, they can put you on the wait list for the next show (and then you can go do another activity downtown). They keep the place pretty clean too, really nice bathrooms haha.

As someone with limited mobility often - I have a tissue disorder and some days I am far more mobile than others. I am also, due to the tissue disorder, more modest means. Thankfully Portland Center Stage is a proud Arts for All member. In addition - they really do welcome people. They have a lot of seating for ADA and accommodate you should you need chair arms or no arms or will have a spot cleared for your wheelchair. I appreciate tickets being low cost for me but with ADA it can be tricky and the events at the most challenging ADA locations expect you to show up right before a show hoping they will have an extra ticket which I cannot physically do and would not want that on ushers either. When inquiring, I have been treated with less than stellar attitude. I would love to have money and mobility and I used to! I know so many who are starting to struggle with mobility as they age and I really encourage them to go to spaces like this where they can easily get in and out. But even just calling - they actually answer the phone and are so helpful! I get that they want to sell as much at full price but it makes me really appreciate how truly welcoming Portland Center Stage is. Arts are healing and the productions here really are top notch. Their staff is very diverse throughout the theater making it feel like a safe space for everyone also. When seeing shows here, they do have a great concessions stand/bar with a great wine selection and some decent snacks. The theater is in such a great location - to the back of the theater is a favorite gelato place of mine and also some of the most delicious West African food if you want to make a whole night of it!

It was me, my 2 kids and my sister and her 2 kids. There was another couple with their kid, so the place wasn't packed. We got food at the concession stand and were chillin at the tables with our kids. After eating, our kids had a sugar rush and decided to race up and down where the tables were. We figured since the place was vacant it was totally fine given that it's an arcade and kids typically run around there anyways. My sister took the kids up to get prizes after they were done playing games and overheard one of the employees talking bad about us, pointing my sister out to one of his coworkers saying how we just let our kids run around. I'm sorry, but if that was such a big issue we could've had an employee approach us and told us nicely that it wasn't okay. we were there January 6th, the employee that was talking about to us was a bigger dude with blonde curly hair pretty sure his name tag was Riley and he was talking to his coworker who was a girl wearing a green sweater. If they don't like kids being crazy running around then you probably should not be working in a place where the customer base is mostly kids. It definitely makes me not feel welcomed with my kids and makes me not want to come back anymore.
