So, the one thing I loved about this place was that it looks nothing like a stereotypical Indian Restaurant. It's clear that the focus of the restaurant is that it should still be a fun pub atmosphere that just happens to serve Indian food. So, looking in from the outside, you wouldn't know that it was an Indian restaurant. But when you walk in and smell it, you'll know. Portions were a little small so expect that you'd need to get a few things to get a full meal out of it. But they are appropriately priced for the portion size. They serve food here tapas-style and I believe you are still meant to share them so the idea is that you get a lot of dishes and eat as you drink copious amounts of beer. The one thing that made this place stand out was their service. It was amazing! During my meal, their card machines broke down and, as a result, I didn't have a way to pay for my food. The manager then comes up to me and says, "It's our fault. Don't worry about it." To be clear, this is only something I'd see in small-town America but never in a major city. So I was surprised that in Scotland's largest city, they were so trusting. (Really earning their reputation as the friendliest city in the UK). I was so touched that I promised I'd return to pay for my meal. I even kept my receipt so they'd know what to charge me. I came back the next morning, paid my bill, and, even though it's not required at all in the UK, I left a big tip as a thank you for trusting me and being so accommodating. Nice variety of tastes and spices. Mostly small plates. Between the two of us, average size portion eaters, we ordered several dishes to share. The 3 lamb chops were grilled perfectly and came w/a mild mint sauce. The garlic nan was a generous size and worked well for dipping in our flavorful daal, and mushroom chickpea dish. The basmati rice had small toasted cumin seeds. It all worked well together. For dessert, we got a scoop of chocolate chili ice cream. It was tasty. It had chocolate chips in it w a hint of chili. A couple funky things... the old fashioned tasted interesting- not in a good way. I thought it would get better as it diluted, it did not. Maybe it was the type of sugar used. It wasn't terrible, just a bit off. I appreciated the preserved orange wheel garnish. The napkins were ridiculously small and ridiculously thin. The food was delicious - the server encouraging to take a few dishes from the menu as it is small dishes. The fish pakora was an absolute treat and I could have ate that all night. We chose butter chicken and my husband who recently started eating meat again chose the lamb which he felt was a very overpowering protein. Staff were attentive and plenty of staff around so you weren't waiting long for any dish. Tapas style Indian food - we thought servings might be too small, but we got 5 dishes & 3 naan's between 3 adults and two desserts and it was perfect! They can cook the cauliflower with a low sear and it was perfect! Highly recommend the Kerala monkfish, saag paneer and Aloo Chana salad. I really fell for Indian food after Dishoom, so decided to find an alternative in Glasgow. Although I made reservations for here on a Thursday afternoon, it wasn't too busy until after 12pm. I chose to come here for lunch time due to their lunch special, but unfortunately it was not offered. Instead, we ordered the Tandoori Spiced Wings (£6.25), Chicken Madras (£6.75), Dum Biryani (£6.95), Garlic Naan (£2.25), and Jeera Rice (£2.95). Surprisingly enough, the chicken wings were our personal favorite. It was a little spicy, a little sweet, and full of flavor. I also loved the chicken madras, which has a really nice kick of spice. If you like spicy food, definitely get this one. Just make sure you get some naan or rice with this dish to balance the spicy and flavors. The dum biryani was good as well over a flavorful rice, although I felt like the lamb lacked in quality and quantity. Yummy Indian food that is a solid alternative to Dishoom, but I only wish their Chai Tea was not so overpriced. read more

The food is good but the service leaves much to be desired. A long time after finishing our meal the plates were cleared. I wanted dessert and waited for the server to return. She never did. finally, after 20+ minutes, I waved someone down and requested the kir with a scoop of ice cream. I was told the kitchen closed at 10:00pm. It was 10:02. Neither Kir, which is cold rice pudding, or ice cream require a chef to be prepared. It's a scoop into a bowl. Still I was denied dessert after never being asked or warned of last call. Then we sat for another 20+ minutes until We had to flag someone down for our check. Inexcusable service. Say what you want about American tip culture but tipping increases the likelihood that servers will work very hard to insure a good time. Paying people upfront for their performance results in a lack if caring and concern for the customer experience--and that is precisely what we got. read more

I so want to give this place five stars, but alas... on this visit they fell just short. It was Sunday evening and we were a party of 6 (later joined by a 7th) who turned up without a reservation. The place was moderately busy without being heaving, so we were warmly welcomed and immediately ushered to an empty booth towards the rear. I loved the architectural decor in here, there's some lovely cornice work - and Corinthian-topped marble columns too! Did this used to be a bank or something? It's a great conversion job, with something of the vibe of a gin joint rather than a curry house. The server explained the tapas-like deal with the dishes, and as suggested we each picked two, then ordered 3 x rice and 3 x nans for the table. Not a bad start, but the dishes are quite small (think small soup bowls), and subsequently we had to order a couple more rice. So far so good. The first blemish on the five star review was when they told us that the Kerala Monkfish curry was off. Given that 4 out of the 6 of us had come here specifically to order that, this was almost a deal-breaker. At that point, I nearly considered leaving; but as I was stuck against the wall it would have been difficult. Besides, they'd sneakily taken our drinks order before dropping that particular bombshell. Oh well, the Jinga prawns it will have to be then. The second blemish is for the grill cauliflower that 2 companions ordered. This was completely blackened - it looked as though it had been blasted with a flamethrower instead of being grilled. However, when it was pointed out at the point of paying the bill, the manager graciously took the charge off the bill (saving the 4th star in the process). Apart from those relatively minor issues, the food was fantastic, the service excellent and the vibe very cool. We went for dinner here last night. The decor is stylish, yet cosy. The waiter talked us through the menu and explained that it's best to order around 5 dishes for 2 people. We ordered 2 curries, rice, pickles, naan and samosas. The food was incredible and we ended up getting more samosas because we loved them so much. Been here twice in a week since discovering it on St Vincent street. What an incredible place! Whilst calm and ordered on a lunchtime, weekend evenings are another thing altogether - make sure you book a table in advance! Service is fantastic-we had the lovely Selina serve us & it's great how personable staff are. This really makes a place make no mistake. As for the food... wow. This is some seriously great simple Indian food, that won't break the bank. Naan was somewhat disappointing, too burnt for my taste, and chai was very good but terribly overpriced for a very, very small pot (more than cost of entree for two small pots). I cannot say enough amazing things about this place! I dream about the next time we go! My guy and I decided to pop in here for a post late night out lunch. Probably the best decision that day! I was able to reserve a table not too far in advance which I was really pleased about. This being a sister restaurant to Topalabamba, we recognised right away, that the manager was the same as Topalabamba. What a nice guy, we were very happy to see him. The interior is a designers dream. I could look at all the pictures on the walls and the decor all day if I could. What a gorgeous set up- someone definitely did their research and put their heart and soul in to decorating this place. We were sat just by the door and just above the door they have a block of insense burning. It was a little strong for my taste, but it added to the atmosphere and it wasn't that off putting. It being our first time here, we were asked for a little extra time to loo over the menu. There is a huge breakfast menu, but we were in for lunch. There are rolls to order, but mostly the dishes are in tapas style form. We started with drinks- my guy ordered a coffee, which came with wee jelly beans to sweeten it. I thought that was an amazing touch. I went with a diet irn bru. We ordered the Lamb Saagwalla which was lamb with spinach. The lamb was so tender and delicious. We also ordered the Tarka Daal which was also very flavourful and delicious. We ordered Gobi Manchurian which by far was the most delicious fried cauliflower dish we've ever had and the Okra Masaladar because I absolutely adore okra. So so good! On the side we ordered the Jeera Rice and a garlic naan, both went down a treat and accompanied our dishes completely. I'll be hard pressed to order something different as this meal was the most perfect we've had in a while, but I will try my hardest to venture out. This place is by far one of my favourite places in the city to eat. The staff are friendly and I just love the atmosphere. A very central location and really nicely decorated inside. It's kept many of the original features and added lots of traditional Indian posters, sepia tinted photos of unsmiling Indian people and some entertaining signs with all the spelling mistakes kept in. All in all I love how it looks. It's also airy because of the high ceilings and there's oodles of room. We went for breakfast and although I would have liked a larger portion I enjoyed my breakfast of eggs royale with saag paneer on naan. The masala chai was also good but came in a tiny teapot (for two people? Really?!) and was rather expensive as a result. The star of the whole meal were the gulab jamun. If you've never had one before they are a little like donut balls with syrup. These were clearly home made, arrived warm and with the syrup on the side. I can't describe how delicious they were! All in all, a lovely place with tasty food and we all intend to return. Update-just under a week later and I'm back for dinner! Very enjoyable but we ended up with a bit too much food so it's worth checking everyone has brought their appetite. The curries were the highlight-the monkfish was perfectly cooked and in a lovely coconut based sauce, and both the butter chicken and chicken lababdar were nice but not what I'd ordered. The gobi manchurian-little cauliflower fried balls in an indo-Chinese sauce were a taste sensation, and the okra curry was also very tasty. I was less keen on the smoked grilled chicken as I found it a bit bland for my liking. I was also less taken with the biryani as there was not much meat and the meat was a bit dry. I had high expectations for this place and wish I could give it five stars. As others said the ambience is very nice and the restaurant is clean. Our group ordered the £20 per person tasting menu. Note: the whole group must get tasting menu. There was a lot of food. The standout were the king prawn appetizer and pakoras. The curries were flavourful but I found the lamb and the chicken just too dry. It came with 2 types of rice and I couldn't really taste any lemon in the lemon rice. We ordered the garlic naan as an add-on and I definitely recommend that and we finished with a very flavourful and smooth chai tea. I have to say It is similar to Dishoom in London/Edinburgh but Dishoom has the better dishes. read more

Was there last week. Not the typical Indian restaurant. Looks somewhat like a traditional pub. Lots of wood. What an incredible place! Great flavors and very friendly, accommodating service. The waiter's recommendation butter chicken was a blast. We had it with garlic naan bread and rice, of course. But also the curries are great. We also loved the eggplant. I had my doubts but I was very pleasantly surprised. Very cool interior colonial style decor and an interesting quirky menu. Not just an Indian style restaurant, but based on one set up by Iranian immigrants to India. Stumbled upon this gem and I am so glad we went inside! The first thing you notice is the aroma in the restaurant. A beautiful blend of spice that made us ever hungrier than we were when we walked in. There was a bit of a wait (dinner time on a Wednesday) but we didn't mind. A busy restaurant is a good sign! We got a drink at the bar and watched as diners around us were clearly enjoying their meals. We were sat at a table upstairs and that worried me slightly, as I thought we wouldn't be seen but a waitress was with us promptly and was very helpful in guiding us through their menu. It's tapas-style, fairly small portions. We ordered 7 dishes (there were 2 of us) and it was the perfect amount. The standout dish was the butter chicken, which was SPECTACULAR. Buttery yet fiery, this was by far the best butter chicken I have ever had. The lamb kebab was lovely as well, beautifully spiced, charred to perfection. Our waitress Katika was attentive and friendly. The decor was charming as well, perfectly lit. There's music - loud enough that you notice it, but not too loud that you have to shout.
