Another time I was told that they don't have space. So they have space for new, name brand clothing but not for gently used? Doesn't make sense and something about this is really disturbing. Spin it any way you choose but it feels wrong. I donated everything to another pantry in Brooklyn and everything thing, shoes, clothing, bags, coats was gone in 30 minutes. I also had my daughter pack up all her gently used clothing, teaching her to help those in need but she learned another lesson and I will leave it there.

I absolutely LOVE to help others so this was definitely my kind of party. The staff was very friendly and nice. To be quite honest, I've never even heard of this place before this event but I'm so glad that I know about it now. I will definitely be back in the near future to volunteer again. CHIPS houses 9 young women who must be 21 years old and over and pregnant in their third trimester and allows them to have a place to stay for one year. They must go back to school and participate with in-house activities. CHIPS offers so much more programs as well. I spoke with Denise who is the executive director about the possibility of me coming back to volunteer with my church and she said that it was fine but I would have to participate in a training class which takes place the second Thursday of each month at 9 am and the last Thursday of the month at 6pm. I had a great time volunteering alongside my fellow Yelpers Peter D, William K, Aura B and Steven S. I'm looking forward to more opportunities like this in the future. AARP offers a Smart Drivers Course and I qualified - and I didn't even have to fudge the numbers on my date of birth - of 21 attendees, I was the youngest - they were born either Depression era or Guilded Age. For them, it was a social event - for me, it was the first day of class - collared shirt - attentively positioned in the first row. I sat in my chair tensely like an embalmed bon vivant while the elder blighters got cheeky in the rear. The class focused on change, change in seniors body's, the vehicles, the roads, reaction times -- videos, handouts kept all of us involved. I came out of the class of a renewed understand of the rules of the roads, safe driving methods and to watch out for the same people I was sitting in class with. At break time - for a whopping $3.00, a beautiful hot (extra soft) lunch was served which was perfectly timed as my stomach was growling like a flat head FORD that was about to spin it's main bearing. Green beans that were a tad waterlogged, extra soft mashed potatoes and a steamed orange chicken that broke apart if you cast it a mean look - but for $3.00 with coffee and tea - you'll hear no complaints from me.

Doe provides homeless services, job training counseling and so much more for men in need. I've been to this The Doe Fund Headquarters for visits. When I visited they provided me with lunch prepared by the men. I asked the men if they liked the services and their residence. Let me tell you these men know how to cook and bake! They are also grateful for the opportunity. I'm sure there's recidivism as with all human services but I don't have the current data. Recently I was thrilled to see the men at my Harvest Home Farmers Market on Friday. They help raise funds for their organization by selling their baked goods. I'm looking forward to going earlier next week. The Spinach Feta Scones were sold out early!! Prices are very reasonable. Come check them out!! I highly recommend. I recommend The Doe Fund if you want to volunteer or donate to a worthwhile cause!

This is the second year I've had it done with them. It was done very quickly, efficiently, and in a very thorough manner. They got back to me right away. I haven't used any of their other social services. I do know that they're a food pantry. They also help people with services like food stamps, housing, and do a lot of community outreach. Their staff are courteous, focused, very welcoming, knowledgeable, and efficient. My experience with this organization has been very positive and I will definitely go back for tax prep next year.

Volunteered at FABSCRAP in Bay Ridge and had such a great experience. They work with companies to…read morekeep fabric scraps out of landfills, sorting through about 6,000 pounds a week, which is pretty amazing. The shift was about 3 hours, the staff was super friendly, and the music made it really fun. You also get to take home up to 5 pounds of fabric after, which is such a cool perk if you're into anything crafty. You sort items into various categories according to their easy to follow charted system. I went with a friend and we worked alongside a few other volunteers. We used scissors to remove labels, zippers, buttons etc. It was interesting to see all the fabrics,sample clothing, trimmings etc. The staff is very welcoming and provide all the instructions. They are available throughout the shift to address any questions you have. At the end of the 3 hour shift you get yo take home 5 pounds of fabric of your choosing (free) . They have a shopping room that you can buy additional materials and trimmings too at 30% discount . The prices are way below traditional fabric shops. If you're a sew/craft lover you will be happy in the shopping room. If you're looking for a place to volunteer that offers a different experience then try a shift here. The shifts offered are 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 4pm. It's located in the Brooklyn Army Terminal. It's a warehouse type atmosphere but downstairs you can find food and coffee etc so don't think it's a desolate area. I look forward to doing some more shifts here.
