It was right down the street from my hotel so I had passed it a few times. It looked like a classy modern yet casual spot. And it is. But I'm not so sure it's good for solo travelers. I walked in and was given a table away from the drafty entrance, which I appreciated, but I then waited quite a while just for a menu. A couple seated long after me had menus in hand first. I ordered a Chimay (when in Belgium) and the strozzapreti con crema di melanzane. It arrived with a salty ricotta side. Apparently some diners don't like the ricotta. I can say I thought it made the dish so much better and would've been totally bland without it. I was feeling awkward as I sat and noticed other parties getting exceptional treatment. Other people were treated to a listing of the evening's specials. I only overheard them. I will say the owner (manager?) was very sweet. He was the one who ended up bringing my check (after I asked twice) and he was all smiles. There are a good number of restaurants closed at this time of year, so the place was very busy. Despite an initial wait, as we'd not booked, we eventually got a table in the main dining room (the outside terrace would have been our favoured spot but unfortunately it was full). They kindly offered us aperitif as we waited to be seated and when leaving we were offered a digestive drink. Menu in hand and our waitress came round with the selection of daily specials. They always have lots on offer and we ended up not bothering to really open the small menu and picked instead from the specials. We opted for the linguini alla vongole, a 'trio' of pasta of the day and the ravioli covered with a tomato n'duya sauce and grilled cheese from the oven. Everything looked the par and we were satisfied with what was in our plate. They won't win any awards but sometimes simple cooking executed well using fresh ingredients is enough to satisfy a table of hungry diners. As we were a bit rushed for time we just went with mains but I was tempted to have an antipasti as I remember them being quite lovely. I'll certainly go back again soon to make sure I get to dig in to those great looking vegies and cooked meats. Generally speaking it is ideal for lunch with very reasonably priced food, a nice terrace in summer and friendly service. I'd recommend to anyone in the area looking for some enjoyable Italian food. I personally recommend the misto as an entree - you get to try small portions of 3 of their different pasta dishes. All of them were delicious, but the ravioli in a mushroom cream sauce was BY FAR the best! YUM! We'd been eyeing the desserts we saw at other tables all throughout the meal and we couldn't decide which one we wanted to try, so we each got one! The panacotta was OK, but the dame blanche (an ice cream sundae) and the tiramisu were both fantastic. As you walk into the entrance hallway you're presented with a close-up view of a large wood-fired brick-lined pizza oven, with the main kitchen behind its' bulky presence. So far, so promising, but the best tools aren't much use without someone who knows how to use them. Luckily, Pantalone's pizzaiolo really knows his stuff. Don't get hypnotised watching the pizzaiolo at work! Walk past him and make a left. Place your order at the till and you'll get a receipt. Hand this to the pizzaiolo and then watch him go to work. A quattro stagioni was heaped with all the goodness I could have asked for and was made and cooked fresh, right before my eyes, in a little over five minutes. Sadly I was far too hungry to remember a picture. Finally, takeaway costs a couple of Euros less than if you eat in the restaurant.
