I started off with the lobster ravioli for my appetizer. This was extremely delicious. I just wish that they had given me more than 3 pieces. The sauce was phenomenal. For my main course, I ordered the boar with a puree of manioca. The dish looked unbelievable when they brought it out. The only problem was that 80% of the boar was fat. There was a really small amount of meat and to get to that, I had to go through layers and layers of fat. I tried a little bit of the meat that I was able to get to and it was very good. The only problem was that I didn't want to fill up on 80% pure fat. I told the waiter to take the dish away and give me a menu again. I tried to explain to him why I didn't want to eat a dish that contained 80% fat and he didn't really understand why. I told him to remove the dish and to give me a new menu. While looking over the new menu, I contemplated just paying for the bill, leaving and going to another restaurant. The manager eventually came over to me and asked me what was wrong with my dish. I told him that the piece of boar that was given to me contained very little edible food and that I'm not going to eat 80% fat. He agreed and acknowledged that there was a lot of fat on there. He then apologized and suggested another plate containing beef and risotto and said it would be ready in 6 minutes. I said ok. He didn't ask me how I liked to cook the meat and just walked away. When the dish arrived, it looked really good. Unfortunately, the risotto was a little bit too watery and the beef was cooked medium. I prefer it medium rare. The sauce for the beef was really good though. For my dessert, I ordered the creme brulee. They used a filling of lemon instead of the standard vanilla. I think I prefer the vanilla creme brulee better. When I asked for the bill, I realized that the charged me for the beef dish instead of the boar. The beef dish cost more than the boar dish. I think they should have charged me for the boar dish because they made the mistake of trying to feed me a plate that had more than 80% fat. Or they should have given me a discount. Considering how good of a chef that is at La Varenne, he should never have made a mistake of serving someone a piece of meat that was 80% fat. This is something unacceptable and would have never occurred at other top restaurants.

But is not a place that I will go back or recommend. There are a lot of nicer places in the city that charge a fare price.

Terra Madre is widely regarded as one of the best restaurants in this city which is known for its distinctly European feel. Since the early part of the 20th century and especially after WWII, loads of emigrants from Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal and even Japan came to this southern part of South America's largest country. About an hour and a half south of Sao Paulo, Curitiba is among the ten largest metropolitan areas in Brazil at about 1.7 million people and it is no slouch for sophisticated dining. On a Wednesday night, our group of 5 arrived early for dinner by Brazilian standards at about 7:45 pm. At that early hour, we were only the second table filled. By the time our dinner was finished around 10:00 pm, the restaurant was booming and the patrons were buzzing in their native Portugese. One of the most unique aspects of Terra Madre is the ability for diners to peruse the huge selection of wines covering the walls of a wine store directly attached to the restaurant. I think this concept would go over big in the States as it lets diners who know their wine inspect the labels of thousands of choices before choosing. Very unique and fun! We chose a fine Chilean Cabernet Sauvingnon from the Cachapoal Valley south of Santiago. Described to have "delicate fruit behind the oak" and at 195 Reals ($85 USD) a bottle, this stuff will bring out the wine snob in anyone! It was fabulous and paired nicely with both beef and seafood. Our group chose a wide variety of entrees including a few steaks, a tuna steak and even an order of fresh octopus. The food was fabulous but expensive even by U.S. standards. Overall, a great experience.
