Named after Judge George Chandler, who also served as Assistant Secretary of the Interior, the city was opened to settlers seeking free lots in a 320-acre townsite. A significant event in its early history was a devastating tornado on March 30, 1897, which destroyed much of the town and killed 14 residents. The town was rebuilt with sturdier brick and stone materials. The St. Louis and Oklahoma City Railroad (later the St. Louis and San Francisco Railway, or "Frisco") reached Chandler in 1898, boosting the local economy by facilitating the transport of cotton, bricks, and pecans. By 1910, Chandler had six cotton gins and a cottonseed oil mill, and in 1949, the Oklahoma legislature declared it the "Pecan Capital of the World" due to its significant pecan production. Despite nearby oil discoveries, Chandler never became a boomtown, maintaining a stable economy rooted in agriculture, livestock, and later, oil and gas services and manufacturing.

"The ladies there are really nice", I was told. After going in at 5:30 and being told "we are about to close" and being told everything shuts down at 10 til. I said I only need to print something.... WOW, they were BOTH RUDE!!! I told the lady at school and she said "yes they are REALLY RUDE." I truly think these ladies need to retire and stay home! One was eating and seemed irritated that I needed help. Eating at 5:30 and closing at 6:00!!!

Considering that the speed limit for much of this open, straight and smooth road is 80 mph, I really can't complain. $4.75 is a bit much but we're talking 100 miles of highway. Hopefully they can invest in a proper gantry system with transponders or pay-by-mail for all. Signage here at the toll plaza is good in daylight. Pottawatomie County and Lincoln County are in the same judicial district so they share one Judge. The women in the Court Clerk's office are very nice and friendly.

For the 1889 Land Run, which opened the Unassigned Lands to non-Native settlement, the eastern boundary was approximately where the Indian Meridian lies, near the present-day counties of Lincoln and Pottawatomie, with the line running close to what is now U.S. Route 177 or Indian Meridian Road. This boundary separated the Unassigned Lands from the eastern territories reserved for Native American tribes, such as the Creek and Seminole Nations, under existing treaties.
