Since doing so, we have seen a huge difference with our kid. He's already a great kid. But to have people other than the parents reinforce great values such as manners, integrity, discipline, moral values, etc. is an amazing thing, particularly in today's society. Kids become parent deaf, as we all know. And, obviously, he is learning to protect himself and gets exercise at the same time. Lastly, it's a community. You meet new people, great people and there are always things happening with the school that you can all participate in. Love this school. Can't wait to start myself.

This studio and system has some unique advantages over others. As part of a national association led by Martial Arts Hall of Fame member Ernie Reyes Sr., the curriculum is very practical, constantly evolving and improving, and quality of both technique and teaching is closely managed. This is true all the way from the Little Dragon (5-8 year old program) through to the Mastery (4th and higher degree black belt.) While color belt tests are held at the studio in Austin, Black Belt tests are in California with all the other schools creating an event and life changing experience for testers. Imagine testing with 300 other candidates and the spectacle involved. Members of the studio feel like a family. It is a supportive, engaged and caring group. Instructors are focused on teaching correctly but understand that each student is different and adapt approaches to stretch and grow the individual. Classes are a good, whole body workout - and due to the breadth of the curriculum, it's never the same and certainly not boring. Citizenship and life skills are also part of the requirements. This studio produces well rounded, confident students with practical self defense skills.

Try this once and you will want to come back!…read more As a father of 3 kids, I always felt there would be a 'right time' to put my kids into some kind of martial arts, just so they would have some foundation knowledge of defending/protecting themselves against any kind of attack. I had no idea that it would become a family activity and something my kids not only get excited about, but want to practice by 'rolling' (Jiu-Jitsu term for folding clothes while a person is still wearing them) with daddy. We have attended about 6 family classes and I have also attended about the same adult classes. The instructors are extremely friendly and accommodate all sorts of experience and ages. The lessons are delivered in such a way to accommodate the wide range of students. The facility is extremely clean and is cleaned/sanitized after every class. The structure of each 1-hour class starts with a warm up, followed by about 40 minutes of lesson and practice where you a partnered with someone more experienced than you and take turns applying what was demonstrated by the Professor (the professor is what you might already think of as the sensei ("sen-say")). During this time, one person is really practicing while the other person is the practice dummy. You take turns practicing on the dummy. In the last 10-15 minutes you are again partnered with someone for a sparring session (this is more practice, only this time no one is the practice dummy). Finishing with some training related words of encouragement from the professor, and hand shakes/ fist bumps all round. I am still a little intimidated every time I step onto the mat, but I can feel it is dissipating with each class I attend. I can feel myself getting stronger both physically and mentally, and sincerely believe I am getting considerably more fit than if I was just lifting weights or doing cardio. Believe me when I say this... IT IS A WORKOUT! You can tell there is a sense of community here and everyone takes care of each other. No one is here to try and prove anything to anyone except themselves. My goal is to continue attending with my kids at least once a week in the family class, and at least twice a week in the adults class. At this stage I have no false ambition of becoming a UFC contender, although after a few more classes I would like to think I could at least protect myself against an unprovoked attack. I would encourage anyone to try this just once and see if it sparks a desire to learn something new like it did for me. I am enjoying this experience and feel like I'm getting better (more comfortable) with every class.

I have nothing but respect and awe when I watch him walk onto the mats with a smile and work with students of all ages. He has endless amounts of patience for all of the youngest students and a wealth of knowledge for the more experienced students. This is not only a place to learn self defense, this is a school that builds character. Master Cha emphasizes self discipline and respect. Much more than learning how train your body, he teaches you how to train your mind. He challenges you to better your habits and be your best self to your peers. This is a school that builds community. It is built on the core principles of modesty, courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control and indomitable spirit. I was a student training under Master Cha for many years. I still remember and think on the principles and lessons I learned from his classes. I owe so much to him for not only teaching me self defense, but also for being a shining example of great character. I only left the school because I moved out of state, and I have gone to many different martial arts studios since. Although I have loved learning in many different schools, I have never found the same spark of community and passion that lives in this school. If you have even a mild interest in learning how to better yourself physically and mentally, I couldn't recommend this school more.

I love Krav Maga because I learned real techniques that could be used in dicey situations. For instance, you spend a lot of time practicing how to get out of a variety of choke holds. I had an instance when I was working as a nurse in the ER where I was choked by a psychotic patient. I learned how to get out of a choke hold non-violently and also how to get out of it and really tear into someone if the situation was different:) Harry Shaw has to be one the nicest people I have ever met. He is really good at encouraging you to go further than you ever thought you could. If you are wondering what Krav maga is, here is a description off of their website: SELF DEFENSE Krav Maga is the official hand - to - hand combat system of the Israeli Defense Forces. It is also the preferred system for the U.S. Military and Law Enforcement personnel. Krav Maga is not a traditional marital art: *No Katas *No Rituals *No Nonsense Based on simple principles an instinctive movements, this reality-based system is designed to teach real self defense in the shortest possible time. Learn to defend against common chokes, grabs, and bearhugs, as well as weapons such as guns, knives, and sticks. Just as important, we teach people to function during the stress and shock of a sudden, violent encounter. Tested on the battle field and in the streets, Krav Maga's approach to self defense will make you safer and more secure.
