The team at Stonybrook Karate is amazing, my son has a blast every time he is there and has no idea…read morehe is getting an education, becoming more disciplined, and getting some great exercise all at the same time. The classes are flexible for his age group and we can go every weekday around the same time, which is great for us and our difficult schedules. Pricing is reasonable, and Sensei GP and Sensei Shani who lead his classes are great teachers. My son is disappointed whenever I pick him up from school and we are not going to karate that day, it is almost always a highlight for him. Recently, my son was having a bad day and was upset about everything from the clothes he was wearing to the weather, and when we got to karate, he didn't want to participate (the first time this has ever happened) and all of the senseis in the dojo came up to him to check on him, and to help me try to get him to participate. Eventually, Sensei Shanny was able to get him to do a few of the drills, something I'd been trying to do since we got there. The whole team is very patient, firm, and really care about the kids.

Having an awesome instructor is key; Sensei Bruno Cabrera is a world champion athlete who has an extensive and impressive resume of achievements as a fighter. I am privileged to train with Sensei Bruno who helps us master proper kickboxing form. He is motivating throughout the entire workout until the moves are done correctly. The entire workout is fast-paced and tends to fly by because of the fun and friendly environment. You can expect a fully body, high energy workout that engages every muscle group with strong focus on your core. No martial arts or boxing experience required. In my opinion this is the best form of high intensity interval training so be ready to push yourself to your limit in the best possible way.

I have conflicting feelings about this place. I realized that it's brand new (opened Feb 2024), so…read morethere's still room for improvement. Plus: 1. The kids seem to enjoy the lessons and learn well. 2. They actually practice the techniques one-on-one, even the white belts look capable of defending themselves. Minus: 1. The owner's wife brings her baby to the gym and lets them roam around. This creates distractions and hazards for the baby, the instructors, and the students. When the baby was in the way of practice, the lady warned the instructor to watch out for the baby, instead of picking her up. They could create an office or a safe area for the baby to stay out of harm's way and avoid being stepped on or kicked accidentally. 2. The instructor/professor seems to let students interrupt them unnecessarily during lessons or instructions. It makes the class chaotic, because some kids trying to get the instructor's attention by clamoring them. They need to instill respectful behavior towards the professor and the class during class time. 3. The price is higher than our kid's current BJJ gym. Additionally, we're obligated to buy their uniforms, which are quite pricey. They also charge $100 for promotions. At our current BJJ gym, we're not required to buy their uniforms and only pay a monthly fee.
