For the Quarry trail, I recommend parking along the main road if you find a parking spot. The parking lot at the trailhead is tiny, and always full. Lots of trails for hiking, mountain biking, and horse riding. It is a beautiful area with hills, Foresthill bridge, lake, and the river. I am not an avid hiker. More of a leisurely stroller. There are various trails with different elevation gains, distance, and difficulty. Most of the time that I came out to this area is to just hike near the confluence and sit along the river bank and take in the sights and sounds. If you go in the summer, just be aware that the temperatures can hit triple digits during the day and there can be very little shade on the trails. There is no potable water stations on the trails. Parking is limited to what is available along the side of the road near the trailheads. The spots fill up quickly on the weekend. The fee is $10. But from April 1- October 1 on the weekends 9am-5pm, there is a transit bus rides from designated areas in Auburn to the Ranger station at the confluence crossing (near Highway 49 and Old Foresthill Road). The rides need to be reserved though, details on the ride program (cost, reservations, route) are on the state parks website. The ASRA is managed by the State of California Parks Department.

We went here with our 3 and 5 year olds today…read more Pros: 1. Small play area, but still lots of room to play. Easy to keep an eye on the kids. 2. Bathrooms are right there, just outside of the play area. 3. Friendly help desk ladies. 4. Clean 5. Hand pedal trains were a huge hit, and they left my kiddos exhausted. 6. We forgot socks, they brought us some to borrow, they were clean and fresh. 7. Not crowded at all. Cons: 1. Small play area, no where to really run around. 2. TVs were ALL over the place. The play area had 5. Yes, 5, in a maybe 30x30' room. We requested they be turned off, as we were the only people there and were told no. When another family came the volume got turned up and it was uncomfortably loud, as well as fighting with the kids to keep them playing rather than watching tv. They really need to remove the TVs, there is absolutely no reason to have TVs in a play area. 4. The slide is really fast, which means that kids come hurtling out the end and fall. We pulled over some of the bean bag chairs and let the kids slide into them. Overall it was a good experience and we will go back. Although I really wish they'd reconsider their 'policy' of not turning the TVs off. It's ridiculous that when we were the only people there they still insisted they stay on. We went to let the kids play, not watch Disney Jr.

They treated each guest like members of their family. Meals were hearty, fresh, and well-made, while the dining hall served as the perfect setting for lively conversations with new friends. Second, the rooms were simple yet cozy. My room had a bunk bed and a twin bed, but I had it to myself. I wanted to sleep with the windows open so I could breathe in that fresh mountain air. Fortunately the sturdy camp blankets they provided kept me warm despite the chill from the open window. Personally, I liked the simple linens and camp blankets and thought they added to the rustic setting. But those of you who require more creature comforts from home for a good night's sleep may want to bring your own linens to supplement what the retreat center offers. Third, the diversity of meeting spaces on site facilitated many interpersonal encounters and spiritual reflections. The spacious living rooms in the lodges--as well as their pianos--made excellent spaces for informal gatherings and impromptu sing-alongs. The conference room complete with its own kitchenette worked for large group discussions as well as break-out sessions. The screened-in porches and other seating areas around the grounds lent themselves to tranquil yet productive small group activities. Finally, words and images do not justice to the grounds. During our retreat weekend, the weather alternated between sun and misty, moody, rain. The land, water, and sky worked together at this special place to create stunning vistas in all directions.

What earns 5 stars however is the warmth and attentiveness of the staff. The smiles and attentiveness made this weekend most enjoyable. They were able to safely and deliciously accommodate my dietary restrictions. The gluten free ( and vegan) zucchini concourse cake was awesome! Can't wait to come back to this lovely retreat center. .
