I wanted to convert a vintage bag chain into a necklace, but was struggling to find proper hardware…read morethat would look good with the chain. (Ex. Size, color, plating) I had checked craft shops and stores, but couldn't find anything that was a good match. Earlier during a quick trip to Chapel Hill, I remembered this shop was in the same mall as Mulberry Silks and we decided to stop in during our next visit. It's kind of across from Mulberry Silks and is near a ladies boutique and the CBD cafe. The shop offers jewelry making tools, beads, closures, and some pre-made items as well. There is a small workspace where you can make jewelry there and I suspect that they may hold workshops or classes from time to time. (There are signs saying that the staff could also try to design/help create custom jewelry pieces for customers if they are interested.) I believe we've run into the owner both times I've gone in and she's usually working on something but will look up and greet customers. If they have questions, she is happy to help. I like that there are closures and jewelry parts available that are 18 KT plated gold, and in addition, there are some gold filled ones as well. We did ask the owner to take a look at our chain to see what size of the 18 KT plated closures would fit or suit the chain we brought best. She pointed out two sizes and felt we could go either way. We didn't have the proper tools at home to install the hardware onto the chain, so the owner was gracious to let us use the workspace and tools to attach the hardware to the chain. Prices for the hardware were reasonable. Also I appreciated that she had the workspace available for us to utilize when we needed the correct tools to add them to the chain. With regard to parking, it can be a toss up. There are a few surface lots you can park in, but one of them is shared with Harris Teeter and can get full.

After seeing a few other bead stores the area, Firefly is sensational. Not only is it beautifully…read morelaid out, but the selection of beads is amazing. And then there's the owner, Melanie ---- so helpful, accomplished, and personable. Melanie creates some wonderful pieces of jewelry. Anyone having ideas for creating something from beads will have a hard time deciding which ones to use; however Melanie is there to help in any way. If I could give more than five stars, I certainly would.

A very unique Durham space for thrifters and crafters. The Scrap exchange is one of the few Durham…read morestaples that I really haven't seen anything like it in other cities. It's a very good, very cool store. Its current location which is located in old renovated movie theater offers a wide variety of things from craft supplies of all sorts to thrifting finds. It's a space that feels like a school art room where anything is possible with just a little creativity applied. You never know what you'll find from old magazines to old family photos to empty 35mm film canisters to old laboratory supplies. Their official thrift store is located in eye sight close by to if you want browse those offerings. This place is a true Durham staple since I was a kid and it was located in Northgate Mall and remains a Durham staple now (sigh... - because I'm older now too) many years later.

There's so many different sections and they're all arranged very neatly. Creativity just oozes out of this building pores. I didn't buy anything at this time because I was slightly overwhelmed. But now I know where to go when the creative bug bites! There are sections for fabric, for art supplies, for any craft imaginable. I would definitely check this place out if you are sick of Michaels.

I am always on the hunt for alternative sources to art supplies found in big box concrete buildings…read morethat offer up half of their space to kitchey already made dumpster filling junk. So when I am in a new area of a town, I google "art supplies" and pray for some relief from the tyranny of plastic and cake decorating, scrapbook paper and seasonal driftwood. So I found ArtPost in an unexpected place. A small dwelling type storefront with funky painted blue building and two doors... take the left. Inside you will find traditional and some on trend art supplies packed inside the small space like a european counterpart. If you are an artist or craftsperson, I don't believe you will be able to leave without something. p.s. they have some of the coolest japanese brush tip pens.

I did not realize this until I came here, but Art Post is one of the only few local art supply…read morestores (and I believe the only one downtown). I have used them twice now for private classes/team building projects and both time they were phenomenal. For far less money than what other chain art-creation-team-building-events asked, Art Post created a custom activity for our group and created a laid-back atmosphere that encouraged creativity but also socializing. I also observed a class with younger children and the teacher was patient and also encouraging of creativity with the kids. Overall, I was very impressed with their community outreach and artistic philosophy. They also host some really great outdoor markets on the weekend where you can find lots of great local art and music!
