The group Curious Creatures brought tree frogs, a tarantula, a scorpion, etc. My son got to hold an alligator. It was amazing! Half of the space is dedicated to the teens and younger, with a group of moms and toddlers listening to a book reading. On the "working" side, I was able to get some study and internet work done on their high speed wifi. There was no power outlet at the table, so I only stayed as long as my laptop would run. It is a mostly quiet space with a limited selection, but it is still helpful and nice to be here.

After returning back to Hyde Park I maintained residency in Hyde Park because I love this city. I am a full-time college student and a single parent of two. I love the children's floor they have and I am at the library a minimum of three times a week and for hours on end each visit. Today while reading and taking notes there was a young woman and man who I believe work here that were talking at the circulation desk. At this point I have been here for about 2 and a half hours and they have been there taking the while time. A woman walks in looking for a book she left here the night before. As it turns out she couldn't check the book out for whatever reason and the librarian on duty told her she would hold it for her for the next day. That specific librarian was on her lunch break and the younger woman "barely" looked for the book before she told the patron she couldn't find it. The patron seemed agitated not fully understanding the situation, in my opinion. The patron kept repeating, "she said she would eave it for me". The younger woman said she is on her lunch break come back in a hour and the patron repeated her previous statement. The younger woman then said, "well I don't know what to tell you I can't find it. She will be back in a hour from lunch come back then". As a social worker I was appalled by the treatment that this patron received at the library today. It appeared in my opinion that the patron may have had some cognitive delays and couldn't understand why they couldn't just reach out to the librarian in question and ask her where the book was. Without a second thought the younger woman went right back into her conversation while I sat at my computer in awe. This will not stop me from coming to this library but if I had a closer option for me and my children I would leave this branch and never look back.

This is a tiny library and has limited hours, not to mention the fact that it is closed three days…read morea week (Friday, Saturday and Sunday), but don't let those details get in your way if you are in the neighborhood and need some library time. The staff is really helpful, if a bit chatty, and they have free wireless, four computers for anyone to use, lots of DVDs and books to borrow and some really nice programs. For those of us who have given up magazine subscriptions but still need a little fix now and then, you can settle in with Gourmet, The New Yorker or House and Garden, although there are not too many comfy chairs for getting cozy. Most are on the hard side. Like other local libraries, they have museum passes to borrow, which is a great deal. Museums are expensive and if you are a museum buff, those admission costs add up. There's on street parking for residents plus a small lot in the back. Support your local library!

It is one floor and an open space.Each section is small and I wouldn't eb surprised if they didn't carry a book in this branch. They will look up in their database and hold it for you at the Valente branch. Your best bet is to come here to work, study or join the Minuteman network.

This post is a brutal and honest opinion about the decisions made regarding the library at 97-99 Newbury Street. Positive At building 97 there is a full size elevator!!!. Looking forward to eating my lunch on the garden benches in the dead of winter. Negative Research area - Access to 5th and 7th floor - 4th floor microfilm room is no more (turned into offices for the staff). Rotunda Room - books and tables gone. No break room for patrons - I always enjoyed talking to members and staff during lunch time. ONE microfilm reader and scanner on the 7th floor. I was told that more things have been placed online. The actual films have been placed in storage on and off site. Not enough computers for patrons especially on the 7th floor - Not everyone brings a laptop! Plan on waiting for a computer if your on research tour. Long time trustee and financial supporter Ruth Bishop who recently passed is turning over in her grave. Her portrait was taken down on the 7th floor and the library room renamed. Changing the name so soon after her death is down right shameful. No more reference librarians - The academic feel of the library is gone. No access to the library stacks - I have often wondered why I have never seen anyone in a wheelchair or using a walker getting books for themselves. The rows are not wide enough!!. Visa/checks? only - You better bring your visa card if you want to buy/purchase anything. The receptionist told me that they do not take cash anymore. No late evening hours during the week. $25 a day visitor pass At the end of the day it was a very sad day on Newbury Street. P.S . I am grateful for all the employees who have helped greatly through the years. I appreciate everything you have done for me!!!.

I've driven past this library for decades but never went inside until the past few years. After my…read moresecond visit to,look around, I just had to get myself a library card here. Besides being an architecturally appealing building, I love the layout and offerings. I've found books, and other items that other libraries either don't have or are hard to get, being checked out frequently. I recently discovered their nice DVD section. I found all seasons of Get Smart and rented them all over a period of about 5-1/2 weeks. They have a decent selection of Blu-Ray discs as well. The first room on the left as you enter is where they keep newspapers and periodicals. It's also a wonderful spot to sit and read. There's a small but adequate metered parking lot behind the building , which is managed by the Town. There's on-street metered parking as well. Just a block or two away, you'll find free parking on the side streets. They also offer passes to museums and some other local attractions, although, in most cases, the discount is somewhat less than those available from the Boston Public Library. The advantage is this is both easier to get to and park at. They do also offer,some virtual passes that you can easily obtain online. It is near at least two MBTA bus routes (77, 87). The staff is very helpful and friendly. They are associated with several other libraries within their network as well.
