My husband and I both work, like many parents here in California and we really wanted to find an excellent daycare at a reasonable price for our baby girl (She started at 3+ months old) as I went back to work from maternity leave. We are BEYOND grateful we found Charley Brown! This is our first kid, and we wanted her to be socialized a few days a week and not at home, since the pandemic has really made it impossible to have other families over or socialize in general. The ratios of teacher/kids aren't too big like some schools here in SD and we knew as our girl got older, they focus on lots of outdoor activities/playtime and hands-on learning which we liked. Ms. Liz at the front office, and Mrs. Melissa and Mrs. Hala in the infant class are all so fantastic & hardworking. They are congenial, caring and pay attention to the details. We get picture updates and reminders which is so nice & they are diligent about tracking her sleep and eating schedule. Additionally, they are taking every step necessary to ensure the safety of staff and kids alike during a pandemic and are very responsive to any questions or personal preferences needed. We don't worry when our daughter is there during the week and she brought home the cutest feet and handprint arts and crafts for the holidays which, of course, are keepsakes for momma! We can't wait to watch our girl grow up attending school here and are so glad they range from so young to Pre-K for that reason. Do not send your child here! My 3 year old daughter started her FIRST day of daycare here at this school and of course, had an extremely difficult time adjusting to being left in a new place, with new friends, new teachers after being home with Mom for the past three months during our summer break. My daughter was being difficult and the daycare messaged me saying that if she doesn't calm down, she will need to be picked up. I messaged back saying let me know what I can do and I let them know that drops offs are difficult for her and I told them a few things that usually help at home. I got no reply. After an hour, I messaged again asking for an update on how she was doing. I got a response an hour later saying that she was happy and playing but they wanted to talk with me about drop off. I called the daycare and they informed me that she is no longer welcome in their center. WHAT!!!! After 2 hours of attendance on her very first day of a new school, they had decided she was not welcome at their center!!! I asked them why no one called me to let me know what was happening. They say they didn't call me because they were busy with an interview and they knew I was at work.... So instead of calling me, or calling my husband, to let us know what was happening at school, they instead called to let me know they wont care for her and she is no longer welcome in their center! So any new parents deciding to bring your child here.... just know, after you wait MONTHS to get a spot in this school, your child better be on their BEST behavior for the very first day, otherwise they will kick your toddler out of their school because "they do not have the staff to sit with your child" when they are having a hard time adjusting. read more

WORST PRE-SCHOOL EXPERIENCE!!! YANK YOUR CHILDREN OUT NOW!!! Staff use the children's play time as personal smak talk time with horrible language right next to children! Everyday I went to pick up my son, he was crowded by girls and would have his arms around them. I talked to staff several times about staying on top of "hands to self rules", but everyday, same old story. Staff cussing up a storm about night before's drunken brawl letting kids to whatever they want. Staff never seemed to like their job. Oh and yes, they are very good about "owie reports", they normally didn't see what actually happened,go figure, but you got a note that your child was treated for having an owie. My son had tons! I yanked my son out of there after about 3 months. My vote is for San Carlos United Methodist Pre-School...no need to be religious. Worth the extra $$$! They actually care about your children and enjoy their jobs. Oh and my son's "owie report" dropped drastically! read more

My daughter has been attending Charley Brown for about 2-1/2 years now. In the beginning the center seemed like they really needed an overhaul on their teachers because they seemed like they were there more to socialize with each other than with the children. But I let her continue to go there because she really seemed to like it and I don't like to change her life more than necessary. Ever since Ms. Cassie, Ms. Brittany, Ms. Jennifer and Ms. Randell (All came in around the same time) started working at the center, everything has gotten so much better. They are all extremely friendly, keep you updated on your kids behavior and activities and really seem to enjoy their job. They are all definitely the kind of adults I would like my child to have as role models. I recommend this school to any parent that wants a safe/fun place for their child! read more

Charley Brown's has been an incredible daycare for our daughter. It features great amenities, like a series of large and well-thought-out outdoor play areas, and a central kitchen that serves out food to all the kids three times a day. But it's the staff and their guiding principles that really set it apart. Their commitment to education and self-reliance and care shines through, and makes a workforce that is passionate, supportive of the kids and of one another, and justifiably proud of the challenging, excellent work they do. They practically vibrate with how much they care about the kids in their charge, but in talking with adults can also express the whys and hows that underpin their care. Our child has matured dramatically while she's been there, from being shy and quiet to rambunctiously playing with her many friends amongst her classmates. Part of that is from her getting older, but the people and the environment at Charley Brown's have had a big impact as well. Our family is moving out of state to be closer to grandparents, and so we have to leave Charley Brown's. But even deeper than our sadness at leaving, and even deeper than our gratitude at their profound care, is our confidence that our daughter will continue to thrive thanks to the path they've helped set her on. Our oldest son started at Charley Brown Children's Center (CBCC) in September 2017 in Two year olds classroom. While is was a hard transition for him, we could see that the teachers were very patient with him to help with the new environments. Soon enough he was singing ABC song while washing him hands and they helped with potty training a great deal. Now he is in Ms. Sam's class and he absolutely loves going to "school" as we call it. Our youngest son just started in August 2018 and he loves his teachers from the Toddler classroom. Everyone is so carrying and you can tell they enjoy working with kids. When we talk about school, our son immediately says "Ana" for Ms. Adriana. All staff at CBCC is amazing. Ms. Cassie, Ms. Stephanie and Ms. Liz in the front office are so welcoming and are great to work with. They keep you updated on everything of what's going on with the center and the kids. There are lots of events for the kids throughout the year and the biggest bonus for us is they provide food for the kids! We feel so lucky to have CBCC taking care of our boys. read more

My son was a student at Charley Brown Children's Center while we were waiting for a spot closer to my home and work. Despite this center being well out of my way, when a spot came up where I originally wanted to be, I had an extremely hard time choosing whether or not we should leave. I have never seen a group of people so caring of their children. My son's teacher, Natalie, was wonderful: kind, creative, fun, engaging and great at teaching the kids. She was excellent at communicating with the kids and the parents, always keeping us informed on what was going on in the class and at the school. The playground here is really cool, they've put a lot of work into making it a fun, active and safe environment for the kids. My son loved the dinosaurs! The food is great, they have a cook who makes fresh meals for breakfast, and is really nice - the kids love her. The classrooms are big and filled with a mix of fun/cool and educational toys. The hours are awesome - 6am to 6pm - and the price is totally reasonable... I'm still wondering if I made the right choice to move him, he still talks about his teacher and misses the playground. This is a great school, I highly recommend them to anyone needing reliable, educational and fun daycare in the La Mesa area. read more

CBCC is a great pre-school and my daughter loves her teachers and all of her little friends! Since attending, her language skills have improved, she can identify shapes, colors, numbers 1-20 and all her letters correctly and even a few short words (she's not even 3 yet!). The teacher's spend time with the kids and actually teach! I couldn't be more thrilled with her progress! It's now 2016 and my second daughter is now in the infant room at Charley Brown. It's really hard to leave your baby but I feel confident that she is in good hands at CBCC. Not only is she receiving loving care but she is receiving healthy care. From the handmade baby food to washing her clothes and bedding separately (she has eczema and needs special detergent/fabric softener), the teachers listen to my questions and concerns and accommodate my requests to meet my and my baby's needs. 5 stars for this amazing preschool! The staff is incredible, the lesson plans are dynamic & the socialization skills my son learned blew my mind! I didn't only feel that my son was just safe there, but that he was loved, supervised & well fed while getting an outstanding education! CBCC went above & beyond my expectations. Just as quick as he was enrolled, we began to feel like the staff at CBCC was family, and it continued through his years there. The 1st week my 2 y/o fell causing scratched, swollen, bruised eyes, nose, & cheek. No call to me about my child s injury, her face looked horrible for a couple of weeks. Her 3rd, 5th, & 7th week she was out sick due to viruses fever of 102 & higher. The facilties carpet where the children play and sleep was dirty. I had to take a lot of time off work on a brand new job, I had to make frequent Dr visit with co-pay and medications & had to pay double child care cost to the facility and back up childcare. Daily I picked up child with very dirty snotty & crusted face. When speaking with the staff at the facilty they stated that you can expect the child to catch 1-2 viruses a month lasting about 10 days and after 3 or 4 months the child will get used it and they also agreed about the kids faces being dirty at the end of the day. I had to find alternative daycare 3 of the 7 weeks that my child was enrolled. The facilty is only as good as the leadership and the director could careless so why should support staff care. read more

I really wanted to love this preschool for my child, but I guess I was spoiled from our previous preschool. We chose Charley Brown because of the convenience for us since it is right across the street from our other child's elementary school. We also liked that they provide meals. I guess as a parent you really have to think hard about the fact that the childcare provider will be spending the majority of your kids waking hours on the weekdays with them. You want a certain environment, certain values from home being reinforced, and you want to know that your child is safe. I realized after trying this preschool out that they rotate several different teachers throughout the class room during the day. This caused some communication issues. At our old preschool I was used to having the same 2 teachers and an assistant for breaks or sick days. I really got to know those teachers and they got to know my child very well. It bothered me that the teacher with my child at the end of the day could not tell me about her whole day, and for a young child that is important. Also, as someone else previously experienced, my kid came home all scraped up and with bruised legs every single day and we did not always get reports about this which made me wonder how close of an eye they were keeping on my kid. I should have paid more attention to the play area that was all beat up gravel when I toured the facility. Young kids can fall down a lot and the outside play area at this center will leave them with a lot of scrapes. Lastly, I would encourage this facility to do some fund raising so they can update the premises. I did see them clean the rooms a lot which was good, but it still wasn't as nice as our old preschool. I realized I had to put my kids needs before mine, and I knew for certain that those needs were met at the old preschool so we ended up going back there. Even with our experience, I do feel that this center could certainly meet the needs of families that have different expectations than ours. I did witness a few staff that seemed very engaged and genuinely happy to be with the children. The rates for care are very competitive for similar preschools in the area. read more
