Charminar on The Parade is the place my boyfriend takes me to when my mum forgets my birthday, or my cat does a big wee on the couch. The cheese naan and butter chicken are like a delicious embrace and make me feel whole and well functioning again. I love the soft lighting and honey tones in the décor, and the elephant on the front counter and the wine list that seems to be specifically designed for us. What I do not love is having to leave the restaurant and totter up the long alleyway out the back to use the toilets. Apparantly the men's toilets are quite hazardous, my boyfriend was trapped in there for several minutes when the lock got stuck. I'm willing to overlook the toilet factor because I love the heck out of Charminar on the Parade, I really do. We all have our little regular spots that feel like home and this is mine. Last time we had to move tables because the air conditioner was blasting us and they couldn't switch it off. Also the naan last time was a bit dry and our waitress seemed somewhat distracted. But I'll forgive this one time because everyone has bad days. I'm a monogamist and our relationship will last forever. But sort out the air con please. read more

I took my partner to Charminar because he was skeptical about the quality of Indian food here in SA in comparison to what he had tried in Vancouver. I couldn't make sense of it either. First of all, the restaurant is extremely trendy (chandeliers anyone?) it has a great atmosphere and the lighting is just right. We sat outside in the balcony seating because it was a warm night, I highly recommend this if you're on a date because it's slightly more private than inside. Service was a little slow but the food is worth the wait, Lamb Rogan Josh is my happiest Indian meal and the lamb is cooked to perfection, it melts in your mouth. Amazing. It's also quite reasonably priced which is always a winner for me! I know there are a few of these around but I'm going to be biased and say this is the best restaurant in the best neighbourhood. It is imperitive that you make a booking later in the week because its very popular, Charminar also offers take away if you feel like being anti social! read more

Not sure where to go for a nice lunch whilst in Norwood? Look no further. Awesome lunch time experience today. Spotless, attentive waiter, prompt service & Chicken Korma which delighted my palate beautifully. I had not been to Charminar since about 2011, deterred by a very disappointing experience. Noting it seems to have become rather popular lately, I returned to see if this sign was supported by food and service within. I am extremely happy to report in the positive. There was only one thing of which I was critical - which was the use of frozen beans in the vegetable curry which, otherwise, had a marvellous moreish flavour. The barramundi in the Goan fish curry was plump, well-textured and ample. The curry itself was was like a delicately-spiced soup, rich in but not overwhelmed by coconut. Star turn of our selection was the chicken vindaloo and this is where the restaurant scored its five stars from me. This was a particularly gorgeous vindaloo. There was a good but not searing amount of deep chill at the foundation of the dish and then a glorious complexity of flavours which made each mouthful interesting and quite exciting. Pappadoms were cumin-flavoured and freshly-cooked and the basmati rice was ever-so-lightly scented with saffron. Service was responsive and intelligent and management was quick to step in and take friendly and professional charge when the dessert order was inadvertently delayed. read more

As far as Indian goes, this tops it for me! Ticks every box! Good food both in flavour and quality of meat (hard to find in Indian places!). I have tried most items on the menu and the naan bread is to die for too. I feel a little duped with places that charge for all components of a meal because it all adds up so fast and you end up spending 50-60 on Indian food for two... But it is really good Not only is the food good but the service and atmosphere are really pleasant as well. Low noise, candle lit without being too dark, easy parking, clean and modern. Toilets are not on premises, you have to use one out in the mall which was a little creepy at night... read more

The food is fantastic, but unfortunately the service is shit. I usually like to give staff the benefit of the doubt whenever I have a bad experiences, but on this occasion, I regret going back the other two times. Most of the time, the staff seemed too preoccupied to sufficiently serve me, during both busy and quiet periods. On one occasion they completely forgot to bring out my meal altogether, I was refunded, left hungry, and still rocked up late for my appointment afterwards. Great candlelit atmosphere, and they put the class in butcher's paper regarding the table arrangements. The curry's I did try were fantastic, and the Vindaloo was smoothe as. (It also didn't have that off putting residue of oil sitting on the top). In saying this, the meals were far from cheap. Maybe the staff hated me personally, but considering how much they charge, you would expect good service, and at the least, your meal to show up. A pity really. read more

Charminar is a classy Indian restaurant. It feels like a slightly modern take on traditional Indian. However, it still has all the classics and some of the best Indian food I have ever eaten. Last time I went to Charminar it was to celebrate a birthday. Make sure you dress nice, because it is slightly classier and great for special occasions! We ordered some entrees, their vegetable samosas are amazing and a bottle of wine from their decent selection. For mains we shared a few curries. All of them were delicious. I could have eaten litres of them, made even better by the greasy cheese naan used to soak up the sauce. The service was good, not particularly fast, but the wait was actually enjoyable. I loved the interior design of the restaurant. It looked classy and modern. It had patterned walls, a lot of mirrors and candles. Slightly romantic. Surprisingly the food is quite cheap. However, when you buy numerous entrees, accompaniments and drinks the bill adds up to be a bit. read more

Been here many times but after a recent visit I won't be going back. I can't fault the food but service was terrible. First up, the waiter wasn't pleased that we requested a specific table because he had to clean it up for us. Our entree never came out and the same waiter, when bringing the main meals, didn't even apologise. When paying at the end of the night, the person behind the counter was less than interested in us, no eye contact, and very dismissive. We felt like they didn't want us there...won't be going back. read more
