I had just been across the street at the old Richardsonian Romanesque courthouse that is all arches and stone and late 19th century "drama" design. Stepping over to here, the vibe sifts completely. This building is very much the active, security-checkpoint, business-of-the-county courthouse and on a day when I wasn't feeling up to dealing with metal detectors and bag checks, the exterior tells enough of the story. Horizontal window bands, recessed lower floors, flat rooflines and that unmistakable 1950s confidence. It declares that the government should look streamlined, efficient and lean forward. It doesn't have the ornament or craftmanship of the historic courthouse, but as a working building it projects exactly what Wichita wanted. It's a functional, modern courthouse rising over Main Street and still doing the daily work of the 18th Judicial District while its predecessor across the way has settled into its quieter second life. It is a practical post-war design that fits neatly into the civic core without trying to be grand or fussy. It was a pleasant stop, especially since i happened to be here during business hours which is unusual for my travel and gave me the chance to walk through the public areas without any issue. Inside, there is not a whole lot to see but the walk through the building was still interesting especially the portraits of the former commissioners and county officials lining the walls that give the place a sense of continuity and local history. Dickinson County is named for Daniel S. Dickinson, the New York senator and prominent mid-nineteenth century political figure who was well known in the Kansas Territory during the years when new counties were being organized. Kansas used several nationally recognizable names in its territorial period and Dickinson was one of them. The county carries his name even though he had no direct connection to Abilene or the region. The courthouse is a working building more than a showpiece, yet standing here in former President Eisenhower's home town and in a county that has been anchored in Abilene since the 1850s, the courthouse feels like one of those quiet civic landmarks that tells its story in small ways if you take the time to look. Eddys completely lied saying they gave me "free services." Those "free services" was our agreement that they would fix the issues on the car upon purchase and I would take on any repairs after that. They ruined mine and my daughter's life never investigating any of our claims or reports allowing him to neglect and abuse us for over 18 months, they need to do a better job at notating people's files and stop allowing people to be neglected. My PE cost me more financial hardship than I ever have known in my entire life and I'm still trying to recover from that person being highly recommended by the SSA stating they've never had any complaints about them. I understand why now because they don't notate or investigate any complaints against a certain person because they know I'm personally very well. I'd say that's a major fail and against regulations, but to get this straightened out has been a nightmare, I wish I never had to deal with him personally because they don't do their jobs correctly as far as I'm concerned, these people are covering up a lot of rules and regulations that have been broke on their end. Sadly, we are forced to deal with these people who seem to get away with destroying peoples lives.

There's a wonderful/large children's section, there are lovely/large stained glass windows, and there are several areas filled with big/comfortable chairs. It's obvious that a lot of careful thought and planning went into this library.
