On multiple occasions, I observed students being bullied by both peers and staff. This contributed to an overall environment that felt uncomfortable and unsafe for many students. There were also serious incidents that raised concerns about how safety was handled. One situation involved a student making threats involving a knife in the parking lot. There did not appear to be a clear lockdown or communication to parents afterward, which left many of us unsettled and questioning how safety was being prioritized. A personl experience i had was when I was taken into a very small, closet-sized room by staff. I was told that if I did not come willingly or "behave," I could be physically enforced by staff. While I was in that room, I was shamed for the way I dressed and acted, despite not having significant disciplinary issues that year. I was also told that if I did not "fix myself" and act differently, there were therapy measures that could be used on me. After this, I experienced ongoing fear and distress about attending class. I would walk through the doors feeling anxious about what might happen next, and it eventually led to full emotional breakdowns. I am sharing this as my personal experience as a student and how it affected my sense of safety and wellbeing during my time there.

This is certainly not the best school, but it is not the worst…read more Starting off, finding which class you want is incredibly difficult. However, this is probably true for most schools (well, except the ones that provide maps for their students) and I can't hold it against them too much. Finding a specific locker is also very difficult as well. The majority of the teachers are good at what they do, but very few of them appear to actually be happy with their jobs and that attitude often shines through when they deal with the students. One of the issues I saw with the school was the cafeteria. It's a mad house during meal time--even more so than what's the "norm" for high schools--and very often, the lunch lines stretch out all the way into the halls which causes problems for students who need to get to their lockers. The students themselves are varied, but there is a very real problem of bullying that can be witnessed at the school on a daily basis. Usually this problem would be dealt with by the school counselor, but like at many schools, I found the people who are supposed to "help" students with their problems severely lacking any type of care for the kids who come to them with a problem. The school itself is very old and when going down to the classes in the lower level, this is blatantly obvious. From ceilings leaking when it rains to subarctic temperatures to the occasional bug that shimmies its way into a student's backpack, I feel very sorry for any student or teacher who has to stay in those lower levels for any extended period of time. Overall, the school is not the best in the world but it is several steps up from the alternatives; short of homeschooling or private schools, Gretna High is the best High School in the area.

RAPS has provided quality Christian education at a family-friendly tuition continuously since 1938. Students in grades K-8 have the opportunity to learn in a multi-class environment where students' needs and abilities are addressed individually. In addition to traditional Christian values, students have the opportunity to partake in specialized music and foreign language instruction begining at the kindergarten level. I am proud to have served as the French teacher for RAPS since 2008. The school almost has a large "home-school" feel where every student receives individual attention. And while the school is small, the students do not lack anything. They have the basics (math, reading, etc), but also enjoy learning second languages, art, music, and much more. Plus, the tuition is the lowest in the valley, so cost is not prohibitive for those who want a private education for their children. This school genuinely cares for its students and their education. I would highly recommend it!
