Oh man! This is crazy to say because Mexican food is one of my favorite foods. But OMG!! No disrespect, this was the worst Mexican food I've ever had in my life. We decided to try a new local Mexican restaurant and this was it! It's a small little restaurant, but it was packed when we walked in. However, we did get a table right away. The chips were SO good, and yes, I'm not ashamed to say that I judge a Mexican restaurant by its chips and salsa. If you want heat, this is the place to eat. The salsa was more of a medium heat, and we usually prefer mild. I asked our server for a recommendation, and he recommended the pastor meat, so I chose tacos. His recommendation was on the money. It was delicious, especially with the avocado salsa, which was also spicy. But overall, I give the food a 5/5 stars and the price 3/5 stars. Service was great, too! read more

Amazingly authentic Mexican thanks to their in house made corn tortillas. Get their tacos-they're some of the best in town. They have a great selection of meat to go along with the tacos which surprisingly includes seafood. I highly recommend the birria as well as the tripe. The birria is slow cooked beef marinated in a (not spicy) red sauce that tenderizes the meat. Tripe is intestine but don't try it before you knock it. They deep fry it and it's incredible. I've also tried their empanadas which they use their corn tortillas to make. They're not the typical style but more like a mini fried Mexican calzone here. It was a little too much on the fried side for me. I've had their ceviche here and I think this one you can definitely pass on. They serve it with saltine crackers which was an interesting choice to say the least. Come for the tacos! read more

Third time I've posted a review on Yelp for Chavela's. I'll be brief because I get tired of reporting it. My family thinks Chavelas is simply the best Mexican food in Joplin or Webb City. We think we have tried them all and have several favorites but Chavela's is or favorite. We are from the West, we are accustomed to Mexican food form Mexicans, and authentic fresh ingredients. My son is fluent in Spanish and spent a lot of time working with immigrants and he has traveled outside the US and been exposed to more more culture than most Americans. I have lived in Puerto Rico, Florida and most Southwestern states. Between us we tend to gravitate taqueria's, roadside taco stands, Mexican family owned restaurants and trucks. SO we are spoiled and have certain expectations of what real Mexican should taste like and even which region and styles. So I say all that to say, this is one of the most authentic your going to find in town in a sit-down restaurant and you will find native Spanish speaking staff and customers (yes the staff all speak great English too). They have many of the typical menu items, just better prepared. But they also have items like tripe, tongue and other meats that many Americans won't try. Flavors are rich but not hidden behind heat. You can get spicy if you want it but they rely more on quality and don't hide behind peppers to cover up for bad ingredients the way some chains do. Last, my wife who loves a good Horchata says they make it the best of anyone in the area. When we ask they say they make it themself fresh and not form pre-made powder. One of our favorites is the fish tacos but everything I've tried has been good. read more

Chavela's Mexican Cuisine is in such a remote location. I definitely would have drove right past it if my friend hadn't already been here. We got some chips, salsa and a free queso (thank you yelp :) ) as soon as we sat down. We got the avocado enchiladas and they were decent! I wouldn't say they were the best enchiladas I've ever had but they were far better than most of Joplin's Mexican restaurants, especially for $15. I left with a full stomach and it hit my food cravings. I would definitely come back! I really want to try their chile relleno next time. read more

Always on the lookout for more Mexican restaurants to add to our rotation. Someone mentioned Chavela's as one of their favorite places to go, so we thought we'd give them a try. First things first: guacamole. My favorite thing to try. We went all out and got the queso with chorizo added in plus the black bean salsa, so we could dip chips in a variety. The guac was tasty but it was chunky style, which isn't my favorite. I like it smashed a little more - not pureed, mind you, but not all chunks. The black bean salsa was great but the queso was slightly bland. Definitely needed the chorizo to liven it up. Margaritas were so-so. I know that's all a matter of preference so others may absolutely love them. I just wasn't a fan. We did try the empanadas. We asked for them without the mozzarella inside and they were able to accommodate, so I'm guessing that means these are handmade when you order. That's nice! And they were good. The tamales were just okay. They only had chicken when we got there (ran out of pork), and personally, I feel like chicken is too dry for tamales. The tamale shell itself was good. I think had we gotten the pork, we would've liked them better. We had good and fast service, but for us, it was just an A-OK place. Definitely not the worst we've been to, but we do prefer other locations better. If we do go back, we will definitely get more empanadas as we liked those very much. read more

This place offers something for everyone. They have some very authentic items and then your Tex mex fares. I love the salsa and the little ala cart salsa bar. The salsa is very heavy on the cilantro which I love and the spicy salsas are great if you want to add heat to any of your bites. The food overall was very good read more

The food is always great - fresh, tasty and authentic. The service is always spot on. My favorite is the chicken gorditas.

Ambiance was fluorescent shop light. There are strands of string lights strewn across the dining room, but they were off and overhead lights on. The waitress made several mistakes in our order. We did not receive our drinks until almost finished with our meal and were never offered water. Our food was nothing special. This is a great little spot - looks sketchy on the outside but is cozy & clean on the inside! There's a pretty decent sized dining room on half of the place with chair/table seating (no booths). Our waitress was very nice and provided fast service. We got chips and salsa (and it came with black beans as well). Everything was seasoned well, the salsa is some of the best in SW Missouri I've tasted. The chips were fresh and warm. I had the carnitas tacos and a shrimp taco. I highly recommend the carnitas! It might be the best I've ever had. Flavorful and juicy - not dried out like many places cook theirs. My husband said he had the best fish tacos he's ever had. We will be back! read more

I've eaten at this Mexican restaurant and they are very good. I enjoyed their atmosphere, salsa and chips as well as their margaritas.

Being from California, it's hard to find Mexican food in the Midwest that isn't tailored to the Midwestern palette. Much of the Mexican cuisine around here lacks the real spice and bite of the Mexican food I grew up to. Not here. Their house-made salsa is obviously fresh and has the right seasonings. If you're sensitive to spice, it may be too much for you. I definitely wouldn't call it "hot," but it definitely has a bite on the back end. There are all kinds of offerings here - from carne asada to carnitas, barbacoa to various chicken offerings and fish/shrimp, there's something for everyone here. The wife had the enchiladas verdes, and I went with the empanadas with carnitas. The enchiladas were "the best I've ever had" says the wife, and the empanadas brought me back to my childhood, so light and flaky, great comfort food. The service is great here, they keep drinks and chips full as you'd like, and are friendly and will offer recommendations if asked. Dessert offerings include authentic flan, tres leches cake, and (America's favorite, haha) fried ice cream - which is wonderful. All this being said, people have personal preferences in every kind of cuisine. Pizza, burgers, Chinese food... so (obviously) this place checks all the boxes for my tastes in Mexican food.
