The chimichunga is 2/3 the size it used to be for the same price. The salsa taste like cilantro with some added cilantro. The rice and beans were pretty good. The whole establishment had an odd smell when we walked in, that was different, not a good smell either, not at all. Food came out fast. This was the 2nd time I had been there. The first time was during the weekday and the food was spot on, but our waitress seemed antsy to get us out. My friends and I were given our tickets before we were done ordering and she seemed put out that we stayed for a while. The second time we had a waitress and a trainee and they were great, however! I love the chips and salsa and had street tacos both times that were amazing as well. The drinks were also delicious. Like most sit down Mexican restaurants. A couple of small things make it excellent. The staff is great. The service is fast. Was able to eat and leave in less than 30 minutes both times that I have been there. The food is just a touch better than what I would consider typical. Politely asked the hostess for a booth rather than a table, and her face clouded with anger. She muttered she'd have to clean the booths, stomped off to do so, cleaned them, them stomped back past us without letting us know we could sit. Then the waiter had some sort of act where he was the smart alec who didn't take no guff from any customer. "Jokingly" complained when our party asked him for stuff. There is nothing wrong with Del Rio, but there is something you need to know if you come here: It is not Mexican food. If you come here with the expectation that you will get authentic Mexican cuisine, you will leave disappointed. If you understand that Del Rio is actually a Tex Mex restaurant, your experience changes dramatically (and to the good). I've been to Del Rio countless times. Food has always been decent; I've never had a bad meal here. Salsa tastes fine, guacamole tastes fine. The queso, although more like a cheesy spinach dip, tastes fine. However, nothing really knocks your socks off. They have your typical Mexican restaurant fare (but remember, Tex Mex-style), but there is also a lot of cafe items like burgers, wraps, country fried steak. (The fact there is a country fried steak item on a "Mexican" restaurant menu should tell you something if you're still on the Mexican vs. Tex Mex fence.) My large party ate here last night, and the service was expedited rather well. I believe everyone enjoyed their meal. I had the chicken fajitas, and the chicken was cooked nicely. It wasn't an overabundance of food, which I appreciate because I do not like getting more than I would ever eat. My husband got the carnitas burrito, which he said was fine although he liked every other carnitas plate he's ever eaten better than Del Rio's version. They do put a nice scoop of spoon bread as a garnish on every plate, and that seems to be a favorite - at least at my table it was. Anyone who didn't want their spoon bread, someone else was more than willing to take it. Is it fair to compare Del Rio to other Mexican restaurants in town? Probably not. As a Mexican restaurant, it will never match up to the authentic food provided by Festival (our personal fave) or even Mi Torito in the teeny tiny neighboring town of Galena, Kansas. But as a Tex-Mex restaurant, Del Rio does just fine. We will be back, as we always come back, and we will enjoy what we eat, as we always do. read more

See update below! Normally, we love this restaurant and we have never had any issues. Tonight, my parents came into town to visit over the holidays and we decided to order take out. The server that helped us was fast and friendly, The two taco salads my parents ordered were good. The chimichanga that I ordered was not good. It was extremely small, It was like they gave me half a chimichanga and it was not as good as usually. This was really disappointing since it has been one of my favorites. I'm not sure if we'll be back. I don't like the idea of paying full price for half a meal. Update: The owner got in touch with me and was very apologetic and asked for our business again. He offered to send a gift certificate to make it right. We will gladly give them another try. This is how a business should treat their customers. If you like Tex-Mex give them a try! read more

The food is good. I was told to order the queso because it's one of the best items on the menu. When I tried the queso, it tastes like a cheesy spinach dip. The free salsa that they give is really good. I ordered the spinach and chicken enchilada which came with beans and rice. The beans were salty and the rice was ok. I'm with Nathan P. Hardly worthy of calling itself a mexican restaurant. When asking several locals where to get some good mexican food, the overwhelming recommendation was Del Rio. Yikes. Yellow cheese sauce, no bean choice and hardly a hot sauce. It's all generic american mexican choices. I don't mind if that's a choice for the novices, but I expect to see some specialty dishes that you can't pronounce and are not drowning in cheese and sour cream. There aren't any. I would chalk it up to just not having choices for mexican fare in these parts were it not for the fact that there is an El Charro on Main Street. They have pages of excellent menu items sans cheese and cream sauce. Go there instead. read more

Just when I'm starting to think all Mexican restaurants taste the same...BAM! We found this one! The flavors are amazing, and the menu options have a more unique feel. They are still the taco/burrito etc. type entrees but they have more to offer...mushroom burrito and stuffed chicken breast with jalapeno cheese are just a couple examples. Their queso (which is really a spinach dip, but don't tell anyone that haha) is my favorite, though it's been on the pricey side lately, probably due to a high demand. This is a great place if you're looking for a Tex-Mex, American Grille meets Casual Mexican Tortilleria style. They have a variety of Mexican dishes as well as American dishes for friends that don't take well to even the most mild of ethnic foods (chicken fingers and steak anyone?). If you go to the location on W 32nd street by St. Johns you will probably get a bigger portion of queso and chips than you will at the Rangeline location. Vive Del Rio! read more

On Monday 5-31 21 we visited in the afternoon for a late lunch, Server was great and kept the chips and salsa coming. When our order arrived, the wife, steak and chicken fajitas and I, steak and shrimp fajitas, I was shocked by the small portions of everything, there was only enough meat, peppers and onions on my plate for 1 taco (The wife was able to make 2), 2 table spoons of beans and 2 table spoons of rice, so why the 3 tortillas ????? (At a Mexican restaurant ????) sour cream and guacamole plate great. I thought we received the lunch menu size until we got the bill. Good food but was charged twice for what we received. Decor and menu is similar to your average Mexican restaurant without much to really set it apart, but it's usually fairly quiet inside, the service is good, and I LOVE their spoon bread (and it's the only place in Joplin that serves it). Free chips and salsa is one of those things you can't count on everywhere anymore, but they have it here and the salsa is a nice medium, no too hot, not watery ketchup. read more

It's okay... Nothing special. We were seated for at least five minutes before our server came to us. We started with guacamole, chips and salsa. Salsa is really good. Guac, not so much. Very plain. Just avocados, tomatoes, little lime, and onions. Not very well blended either. For our meals I got the chicken enchiladas that came with rice and beans. It was good but not great. My husband got the Flautas and he thought they were really good. Overall OK place to eat but I wouldn't be itching to stop here agin if we pass through. read more

Their salsa and queso are some of the best I've ever had. We ordered the combo fajitas and the beef tamales. The steak fajitas had great flavor. The chicken fajitas were good as well, but if I had to choose I would say the steak is the better option. The tamales were good as well. Ive only had gone made tamales so these were the first time I've ordered them at any restaurant and I thought they were delicious. We have been going to Del Rio once in a blue moon for seven years. The reason being is not because of the food or restaurant, but because we like a variety of restaurants. Also, if you get a to-go order, they really hook you up with chips, salsa and flatware. Del Rio is incredible. The chips are really good and their queso is excellent. However, if you really want a tiny, and beautiful gem, get the Rio Burger. The Rio Burger is as soon to an old school diner burger without traveling back in time. It is just one meat patty, one slice of tomato, one leaf of lettuce and two pickles. Nothing fancy like weird sauces, over-sized bun, and gourmet meat. They do not overload the fixings. Normally I don't do this, but we were told we had a 20 minute wait and they took our number to call us. Apparently they wrote number wrong, but we ended up waiting for 50 minutes because they called that number. We went in to ask them and they said they had the wrong number, which is fine; mistakes happen. But what was NOT OK was the two teenagers that acted like they couldn't be bothered to apologize or even find us a seat. They asked us if we wanted to be put back on the list so we could wait for another 20 minutes. I wasn't going to wait a total of 70 minutes to eat cheap Mexican with bad service. Maegan was our waitress. She was great. I had a taco salad and it was good. My husband had the seafood chimichanga. It was good but a little on the small side. My son ordered beef fajita quesadillas. Fun place to go and pretty good tex-mex (not mexican) food. Atmosphere is half the attraction...it's themed like a mexican village. Easily the best atmosphere of any mexican place around. The food is tasty, but not out of this world. The white queso is good and so are the enchiladas if you order them with the chipotle cream sauce (not on the menu). One area where they have major room for improvement is the two most common sides, the beans and rice. Rice is generally hard to screw up, but somehow they have found a way to do it consistently... it's always dry, too salty, and has peas (???) in it. Beans are OK, just your average run of the mill re-fried beans. Aside from that, everything else I've tried is good. If you are in the mood for a fun tex-mex place, this is the ticket. read more
