Surely they are masters at greasy bacon and eggs, day old coffee, and probably little else. Wrong. Very wrong. This place may look a little ordinary from the outside but there is nothing ordinary about it. It may look like a classic diner inside but it does not sling food like an old diner. The menu is well-written and the food is high quality, excellent, and borderline gourmet. Do not order eggs, bacon, and toast here. Swing for the cheap seats. We tried the Ham, Avocado and Tomato Eggs Benedict. The hollandaise sauce was fantastic. If I didn't care about remaining somewhere under 350 pounds, I would return every Saturday and eat my way through every single eggs benedict concoction on the menu and there are many such benedict creations from which to choose. The Banana Nutella crepe, with "whip" cream (not "whipped," apparently, we're gentle with our cream here, folks), was decadent. If you like your breakfasts on the sweet side, you will enjoy this one. The Tres Porkitos omelet (made with ham, bacon, sausage, and cheese) was hearty and just as good as it sounds. The breakfast potatoes were very nicely done but could have used a little more seasoning. There is a salt shaker (and numerous hot sauces) on the table for just these types of emergencies. Do NOT leave here without getting a freshly-made biscuit with butter and honey on the side. You have made a serious error in judgment if you leave without getting one of these. Even the freshly-squeezed orange juice was delicious. Our server was wonderful. No complaints. They have dining inside or on the patio. Encinitas is a delightful community. While I loved the old school diner feel inside, you cannot go wrong with the people watching outside on one of our almost always sunny days in So Cal. If you live here, you already pay the Sunshine Tax so get your money's worth and sit outside, if you can. 10 stars.

The latter was a good amount of food. My omelette was the bacon, cheese and avocado, and it was pretty good. Service was fine, and we sat outside. About the only thing that was a concern was the weird guy outside who intentionally ran alongside and obstructed joggers as they passed by. He hung around the area for a bit and seems like a regular, based on the waitstaff's reactions.

Come for the Matzo, Stay for the Eye Candy (and the Sweet Chef!)…read more So, I took my grandma out for dinner because she had a massive craving for matzo ball soup. We ordered, but a few minutes later, our waiter came out looking like he had to deliver bad news. He apologized and said the chef refused to serve the current batch because it "wasn't up to his standards." Before we could even process being denied our soup, the chef himself walked out to our table. First of all? The man is dangerously handsome. Second of all? He was incredibly sweet. He politely offered us tomato soup instead, but then saw the heartbreak in my grandma's eyes. He told us, "Look, if you really want the matzo ball soup and can give me 15 minutes, I will go to the back and whip up a brand new, fresh batch just for your grandma." Naturally, we waited. Since he knew we were sharing, this absolute legend threw an extra matzo ball into the bowl so we could each have two. Talk about elite customer service! It really made us realize how much the people here care about the quality of their food. They won't serve you subpar dishes just to flip a table. My grandma was on cloud nine. She officially declared it the absolute best matzo ball soup she has ever had in her life (sorry, family recipe, you've been replaced by a handsome chef).

The place was packed and there were so many people in and out of the Lafayette hotel, as usual. This was a late night dinner so I believe we arrived around 8:30 PM. We were seated right away, which we were really happy about. Every time we come the host that sees us is very nice and customer service oriented. Our server was very nice. We ordered the deviled eggs for the table to share. We also ordered Patty Melts and shakes. I ordered onion rings for my side to my Patty Melt and everyone else got the side of fries. The deviled eggs is a super Duper tiny appetizer. The highlight is that it comes with salmon roll on top which are delicious. Our food came out and I will say that it just tasted OK this time. The patties in the patty melt were undercooked (they looked gray colored not brown) and didn't have as much flavor as they normally do. My onion rings were decent, but they just weren't fried correctly because a lot of them were stuck together. The shakes were the highlight of the meal as they tasted delicious and we enjoyed them. Customer service is always great. It's just that, on this night, the food wasn't as tasty as it was the first time. We hope that the food gets back to the great taste that it used to have soon.

Like several other places on this street, this place gets slammed constantly, especially on weekends. Even so, the customer service is super fast and friendly. They really try to stay on top of my coffee cup. The coffee itself is a really smooth and balanced flavor. The traditional diner appearance is also great. The only reason I would give 4 stars would be the chicken in the chicken and waffles.....which is not even bad. I have high standards for this in particular. Thinking about it again, there's a lot of bad chicken in this country, but I've rarely had bad chicken in chicken and waffles. Maybe it's because a breakfast place wouldn't attempt it in the first place if they couldn't make it well. I found this portion to be a bit light on the actual meat. The breading is excellent, but I can see that the meat starts to become drier in the sections where the meat is thicker. And, of course, still a bit lean. I believe chicken for chicken and waffles should be dark meat, like any self respecting Asian should. Lmao. Grits were good too.

Got the cheesesteak…read moresandwich and what a disaster, I think a sliver of bell pepper was put into my entire sandwich the other half had no bell pepper in it, but an abundance of onion (not complaining there, but would have been nice to balance with bell peppers.) The cinnamon roll was a total waste, took it home and so bland, lacked any flavor in the roll itself, the frosting was the kids favorite. For a cinnamon roll to have a splash of cinnamon in it is bizarre. It felt like Clayton's was cutting corners hoping people didn't notice, while still charging a lot for their shrinkflation. Service was ok, it took forever for the server to just come up to greet us, to the point the hostess went and got waters for us. Again not the normal for this establishment, but still very blah and disappointing. For how expensive things are I would not eat here again. Normally we would visit numerous times in during or time here.
