A coworker of mine swore by it, so I decided to give it a try. I had been having horrible knee pain for years, and as a 32 extremely healthy and active person, I was at a loss how to fix it. I had spent months in regular PT, seen several orthopedists, visited a sports injury doctor, spent months strengthening my muscles around my knees, tried every remedy and vitamin I could find, along with dropping foods that cause inflammation... the list goes on! I was constantly suffering from swollen legs and knees, causing sharp pain beneath my kneecap and constant dull pain in various parts of my knees and surrounding areas. This inhibited me from regular actives such as hiking, stairs, running, even the act of sitting down on the subway was painful at times. I'm not exaggerating when I say the pain left entirely after the very first visit to Pat. I continued to go to her weekly and every week the swelling went down in my knees and legs. I started to noticed definition in my ankles and above my knees that I don't ever remember seeing in my life. She called it "getting the damp out." I've also noticed less puffiness and swelling in all areas, including my abdomen and even my face. As someone with many food allergies and intolerances, Pat has helped with that as well. If my stomach is upset and bloated, she addresses it during our sessions and within 12 hours after my visit I'm feeling cleansed and lean again. I could feel a cold coming on after extensive travels, and the next day after treatment there was no more scratchiness in my throat and the cold was gone completely. On top of all these major changes, I'll never forget how I felt after the very first treatment. I walked out onto Broadway with this overwhelming feeling of love and peace, as if I was more centered or had just come back from an extremely relaxing vacation. It's hard to place, but I can very confidently say the treatments have had a huge impact on my level of day to day stress and anxiety, making me feel more calm in everyday work and personal activities. I can't say enough good things about Pat, as you can see in my short novel above. I'm a true believer in acupuncture, even though I don't understand it, I've see the results in so many areas physically and mentally. I was so used to the constant pain that I hadn't realized how much I was suffering. I highly recommend Megan for people who want to end their back pain, neck pain, improve their posture, work on spine disorders, or sports injuries. She is brilliant, caring, professional, and her methods are effective. The first session, Megan asks where I feel pain and what I would like to work on, and gives me a strength and flexibility test to examine which side is stronger or more flexible. No other physical therapist looked at the difference between my right and left body parts except for Megan. She records her analysis on a personal spreadsheet--which she checks each session--what areas of my body need strengthening and stretching. After that initial test, Megan starts giving me exercises to do. She always demonstrates the exercise first, so I can see what it looks like. Then, I try to imitate her, and she will identify the body part that is out of correct form and gently adjust my position. At the beginning of every session, Megan asks about my progress with the exercises, reviews them with me--checking my form--and gives me more exercises to do. I've seen Megan for five weeks and the improvement is tremendous. My friends ask me if I've grown. My back pain has significantly diminished and I look forward to even less back and neck pain in the future as I continue with my exercises. I had so many "Aha!" moments in sessions because Megan helped me finally understand how my subconscious bad habits were negatively affecting my posture and causing pain. Megan points out the muscles that need work and explains to me why. She taught me stretches and strengthening exercises and developed a customized schedule for me to follow at home. The strengthening exercises are challenging but never painful, and the stretches feel wonderful. Both the stretches and the exercises are easy to do at home, especially with personalized notes that Megan emails you, with helpful reminders of what to focus on during each exercise. Megan's massages are great, too! I always left sessions with Megan with a straighter spine and a smile, especially after sessions with a massage. My endocrinologist told me that all of her patients love Megan, so I had high expectations, even…read morebefore our first session. I wasn't disappointed. I came to her in an attempt to cure my osteoporosis without hormones or bisphosphonates. My internist had been skeptical about exercise as a workable cure, but for several reasons, I didn't want to be on medication.* Too much medication had gotten me into this predicament in the first place. I had been on high doses of steroids for asthma as an adolescent and even higher doses of thyroid hormone (unnecessarily) for seven years, into my mid to late twenties. The first PT I had seen following problems with a meniscus tear started me on a routine of exercises and stretches to strengthen the muscles around my knee and to ease a pulled hamstring muscle from a former attempt to fix the knee myself. I needed to be as mobile as possible to maintain and improve the density of my bones, so I assiduously followed the routine this first PT laid out for me. Indeed, the meniscus began to improve but the results of my bone density test were mixed and not very encouraging. While my hipbone density appeared to have improved, the density of my spine had worsened and was becoming dangerously low, and my forearms had appreciably worsened as well. Megan carefully analyzed the exercise program I had been given, maintaining most of the former meniscus exercises with some minor adjustments, and went to work developing an exercise plan that we hoped would address the low bone density. She was careful to work with me on improving the alignment of my spine when doing all exercises, as that would help to develop stronger vertebrae as well as prevent spinal injury from the weakened bones. Because of my age (approaching 70, now), several previous injuries, and some mild body deformities, Megan had to work around a lot of problems. Her thorough knowledge of anatomy proved truly inspiring, as we devised creative solutions to various abnormalities that enabled me to stress the bones that needed to be stressed in order to build bone without causing injury or pain. We developed a wonderful working relationship whereby I emailed her whenever necessary to report on problem areas or pain or if I was confused about how to do an exercise or how often. Each actual session was built around what I needed at the time to continue my progress. She used my iPhone to take pictures of me doing certain exercises so I would have them as a guide. Balance is crucial to preventing falls, and since this takes on even greater importance when one has weak bones, Megan and I spent a fair amount of time on various exercises to improve my balance. The extent of her anatomical knowledge reached to the tips of my toes, as I worked on ways of strengthening my feet (despite bunions, a very high arch, and a hammertoe), resulting in far better balance than I previously had. She provided me with strengthening exercises to compensate for a once-splintered shoulder, allowing me to strengthen my arms more than had been possible before. From my following bone density test, we were pleased to see further improvement in my hips and at last an end to the downward spiraling of my spinal bone density; it appeared to have stabilized. But the forearms still presented a problem, so Megan had me buy a set of pushup bars to work on the forearms more aggressively. This new equipment enabled me to compensate for a tendency toward wrist and elbow pain following rigorous workouts. Through all of these trials, Megan remained upbeat and willing to challenge me where possible, for growth, but always wary of my doing more than I should, which seems to be my natural tendency. I learned a lot about balancing workouts and rest from her, and listening to my body's signals. Had it not been for her continuing interest, I would very likely have given up. *I am quite hard of hearing, and it is not entirely known if or how severely many of the hormone fixes used for strengthening bones can have ill effects on women's hearing.
