The 34 rooms are named after drinks and all bar 4 come with roll-top baths and showers (the remaining 4 just have showers). The beds are made up with crisp Egyptian cotton sheets and are incredibly comfortable. For me, the thing that makes a difference is the service. Attention to detail is superb from the free loan of CDs for the rom, through the fresh coffee, through the attentiveness of the staff at every opportunity. Breakfast is good - Continental or full English (including the oft forgotten kippers and so on). Compared to many HdV's the dining room here is small but it still retains the charm that HdV have fought so hard to recreate. I visited it recently in its' capacity as a pub and wasn't all that impressed. While the service was helpful and friendly enough they seem to have mistaken orange squash for orange juice and a paved yard with some tables for a patio garden. I'm quite willing to concede that I may have visited The George in the wrong way and that had I stayed there in its' doubtlessly lavish rooms I might have a very different take on things but the fact remains that as a pub this place doesn't really do anything to stand out.

Only a 2 minute walk from the beach and a short bus ride to the town centre and marina it is in a great location. The rooms are ok value for a 4 star so if your looking for cheap and cheerful look elsewhere. However, single rooms around £50 and doubles around £75 a night if you are coming down for a romantic get away or business then it's pretty good. latest check-in is 21:00 whilst check-out is at 11 oclock in the morning but luggage can be looked after for the remainder of the day.

Which reminds me, the wine and cocktail list at Hotel Du Vin is second to none. I could drink here every day and I don't think I'd be served anything I didn't love! I've yet to eat in the Bistro but a couple of neighbours have been and all raved about it. There's also spa and massage treatments available and live jazz on the first and third Sunday of the month. They get a bonus point too for owning a beach hut - which you can hire per day or week. What more could you want from a hotel?

Everything here is to a truly high standard, but massively overpriced, losing Hotel du Vin the five star rating it truly deserves. I didn't realise Hotel du Vin was a boutique chain until recently: having only noticed it in Brighton, I assumed it was another of these ridiculously expensive, privately run hotels that dot the Brighton seafront between the two piers. It certainly seems that way from the outside, as the decor and set-up is professional yet quirky: an old fashioned thatch sandwiched between two tall towers. This charming eccentricity extends indoors as well: the rooms are designed in a casually peculiar way, often mixing epochs and colours for some... interesting results! However, under this there are all the signs of a well-run, professional business. The bistro bar/restaurant serves absolutely excellent food, and the wine and cocktail list is impressively long. The spa treatments on offer, while expensive, are apparently very nice, and there's even a rentable beach hut. Nothing has been skimped on here. All of this does come at a price, and it's a rather hefty one at that. Everything is quite simply too expensive: a common Brighton issue, but the prices here are so astronomical that they blow a lot of the town's other price-hikers out of the water. I suppose what is on offer is of the finest quality, but it is all excessively rich. I suppose Hotel du Vin are trying to attract a certain type of clientele... and if you sit in the lobby for long enough, you will see some faces you recognise! While Hotel du Vin is a lovely experience, be it to stay or have a meal or treat yourself to a massage, but make sure you're bringing plenty of cash with you!

It's not huge (maybe 12 tables?), but the bright, airy decoration makes it seem open and not at all crowded. We were told that the corner table we wanted wasn't available, but our waitress swiftly jumped in and said she'd re-arrange things so we could sit there. Nice start. Looking at the menu, I didn't fancy any of the starters so we both dived straight into the mains. I had sirloin of sussex beef with garlic mushrooms, dauphinoise potatoes and a wine & rosemary sauce (and a side of green beans). It was delicious. I have to say my steak was maybe a little overcooked for me (I like medium rare), but it was so tasty that I didn't complain. Rare for me when it comes to meat. My friend had fried breaded halloumi with sesame seeds, celeriac and truffle purée, baby spinach, garlic wild mushrooms and red pepper & lentil sauce. Goodness me! It was *delicious*, and the chef even made her up a side of dauphinoise potatoes because she loves them so much. Prior to that we devoured a decent-sized home-made roll as well. Plus, we had the house red, which was a weighty merlot totally under-priced for how nice it was at £19 a bottle. Finished off with an espresso each, and we shared the amaretto & amaretti biscuit parfait with griottine cherries plus almond tuille. Best bit of the meal for me. It honestly makes my mouth water just thinking about how good it was. Somehow, we only ended up paying £32 a head for that. Incredible value, especially as it included 12.5% service! Michelle and I have spent more on basic takeaways than that, and this was divine! We finished our wine in the bar, which is small but perfectly formed with some super-knowledgeable barmen with smiles all round. Two shots for £6 later, and a super recommendation for 'the second best bar in town' - and we were on our way. I have stayed here previously, and the experience was just the same. Well, I'm no Martini expert, but their straight up, made with plymouth gin (or wyborowa vodka, your choice), certainly got me going for the evening, it was delicious - and strong. My personal new favourite though is the Polish Spring Punch: Wyborowa, Chambord, Raspberry purée, fresh lime, Gomme and Champagne. Albeit it was in the basement floor(which is normal for Europe.) -Comfortable Beds, large LCD TV, and even a small refrigerator(very rare! :)) -Walking distance to everything: Brighton Pier, Beach, Royal Pavilion, Shops, restaurants..i360 tower is a mile away, but a scenic walk. -Excellent breakfast buffet with lots of hot foods, even smoked salmon bagels! CONS: -No dedicating parking lot, it was a bit of nightmare spending 30 minutes driving around trying to find street parking, which we luckily found someone leaving just across the street. -Old creaky building, as most are in the area, so you'll hear lots of footsteps, especially in the Brighton room. -No Airconditioning, though probably not needed 90% of the time. -Breakfast is a the sister hotel The Charm, just 3-4 short buildings over, but could be annoying if its raining heavily. Receiving 4 stars and a silver award from Enjoy England, there are many reasons to stay here. The prices are not small but for all the facilities they lay on it is worth it. They also offer massages, treatments and botox if that is what you are into and at very competitive rates. I would like to meet the owner of this place as he clearly knows how to make a room look classy which, makes you feel relaxed immediately. Shake off those January blues by treating yourself to a last minute deal.
