We hid from the rain this little cafe and ordered some excellent fry ups. Two of us had the standard English breakfast while Dan went for the large version which contained a serious amount of meat. I really enjoyed mine. The line up was scrambled egg (you get to choose you egg type), sausage, bacon, black pud, beans, tomato, mushrooms, hash brown and toast. My toast could have been more toasted (it was still pretty much bread) but everyone else's looked good so I think it was a blip. I had a latte too which was good. It's waitress service to order but they were not in any rush to come over so if you are hungry I'd suggest heading up to the counter.

The Wolfhouse café is part of small 'Wolfhouse' complex of converted outbuildings and wooden cabins also comprising a gift shop, a gallery, and a quirky garden with children's play area. The gallery was shut on our January visit, but everything that was open was in the best possible taste and oozing a relaxed charm. Although only going on one visit, the culinary firepower here seems to be beyond outstanding! Ignore the fact that their website lacks contact details or even an address - this is probably just them being arty! I note that the pâtisserie list on The Wolfhouse website just goes on and on and on, with 20-30 items on the list advertised as being available each day. This quote from their 'Savouries' webpage sums up the cheerfully inventive spirit, "When we run out of one thing, we find something else to cook. Simple! It's just so much more fun that way!" With so much inventive spirit, plus everything so well-sourced and made from scratch, I think we can safely say that this 30-seater café is a better option for the serious foodie than a lot of fine dining places. Plus, it is totally relaxed with great staff, and priced at not much above your average country tearoom. Highly recommended.

Staff are generally welcoming of almost anyone, whether a small family, large family, group of hikers, dog walkers, children. Everyone. Completely fell in love with this place…read more The staff are very welcoming and very knowledgable about the numerous tea and coffee selections (their green tea recommendations are perfect). A very bright and cheerful atmosphere - large windows to watch the world roll by. And the cats, of course, are sweet as can be. All kitties are friendly, and more than one will happily curl up in your lap for a snooze. Such a wonderful place!

And once you rejoin the main road turn left to continue over Hartside - a stunning drive.

The pricing is quite high but it is owned by the National Trust so it is understandable. In all, I would highly recommend, if your not vegan or tall. Dogs are allowed into the cafe like many other businesses in the Lake District. A nice little spot to rest near the ferry.

I considered the blueberry scone as I have had it before and can vouch that it is spectacular and it doesn't seem quite as indulgent, but I went for the Cherry Pie. Yes, Cherry Pie. 1) I don't think I have seen Cherry Pie as an option anywhere in Europe and 2) it just looked gorgeous, even though it was a square slice. The crust was browned nicely and was not too tough or too thick. Equally as important... no soggy bottom! I think that there was no soggy bottom because the filling was rather thick, but it had a nice balance of sweetness and tartness. My only criticism... a few more cherries in the slice would have been lovely, but even that didn't stop me from devouring it.
