I have only lived in the Ottawa area for one month, but I feel I have already found one of my favorite restaurants. We went to Chez Fatima for dinner on a Saturday night, and I couldn't have been more impressed. I'm still not very familiar with this area, and I was surprised to see how dead everything was on the weekend. We were able to find free parking right across the street. We did not have reservations for dinner, but came early in the evening and we were able to get a table. Most of the tables were reserved, so I'd recommend calling ahead. For dinner you are able to pick from the menu or the buffet. The buffet is ~$25 and includes soup, a beautiful salad selection, bread, two veggie dishes, lamb/fish/chicken tangines, sausage, shrimp and dessert. It is a phenomenal value, and all of the food is homemade and fresh. They even bake their own bread, which is a delicious anise loaf. The restaurant is very welcoming and cozy. Very disappointing second experience compared to the one I had a year ago. The staff (1 person) tries to push you towards the regular menu even though the buffet option is still offered. Apparently, because people abuse! Ok! So the buffet is reduced to the third of what it shows on the pictures, with an insulting sweet section! Clever way to get us to order from regular menu... With the go to spot for Moroccan food being a victim of COVID. This one serves the gap I suppose. They are more geared towards the buffet as other than our table almost everyone had the buffet. This lead to very very slow food delivery. I enjoyed the combo of sweet and savory (especially for meat dishes) though I wish they could spice up the tajines was more. For a cuisine that's known for bold flavors there are hints of flavor here and there. There is a lot food here for what one pays and dessert is almost all you can enjoy. My husband has actually traveled to Morroco, and his impression was that the food here, as others have observed, is authentic. I found it all to be delicious. The chicken tagine had complex, clear layers of flavor, and was not weighted down with too much sweet fruit: it was just right. Lamb shanks were a treat, slow-braised to fall-off-the-bone tender. Some of the best hummus I've ever had and a whole different point of reference than the grocery store variety. Fatima herself was tending to guests and she sets a warm tone. We plan to return to the area and will definitely return to this spot when we do. read more

The interior is poorly decorated and the atmosphere was highly uncomfortable. The place was pretty much empty. Our waitress was the real problem--rude and glared at us while we were eating. Two people in our group had the buffet and the rest ordered a la carte. The buffet is NOT worth it. Very pricey and not many selections. Go with the menu. However, the food was absolutely excellent. First of all, the complimentary bread was delicious and served warm. I had the pastilla for 2 as an entree (quite filling) and I still think about it today. It was the perfect blend of sweet and savory--crisp pastry on the outside, an extremely flavorful chicken filling, topped with cinnamon and powdered sugar. I can't even describe how good it was. Even though I raved about the food, I would not even consider coming back. All-in-all, it was just way too expensive. Thought we would try something in Gatineau and Moroccan was rated very high. We went on a Thursday night and it was about half full. The service was a bit slow to start, but they were super friendly and helpful. We split the hummus and feast for two with lamb and chicken in the tajine. The feast was a ton of food and very delicious. I loved the chicken in the tajine and the pastilla with seafood was very good. For dessert they brought us a few different cake options. The apple cake was divine! Overall I think it was a nice little spot in Gatineau. Worth checking out if you like Moroccan food. read more

My mother was visiting from out of town and I suggested we go to Chez Fatima for dinner. I had had a good experience here on my previous visit and hoped my mom would enjoy it as well. Chez Fatima not only did not disappoint, it far exceeded our expectations! Food: Delicious! We ordered the "Feast for Two" between us, which included Harira soup, a pastille (spiced chicken, cooked in pastry, and topped with cinnamon and icing sugar), two tagines (we opted for the lamb with figs and almonds and the chicken with lemon and olives), a vegetable couscous, and dessert (date squares) with mint tea. Every dish was amazing, though our favourite was the pastille. If you haven't had this before don't be surprised by the icing sugar - it's actually a lovely savoury dish with a bit of sweetness that fits so nicely as a course in the meal. The tagines were also amazing - the meat was very tender in both dishes, and we were delighted at how nicely the flavours complimented each other. I haven't had many opportunities to try Moroccan food in the past, and I thoroughly enjoyed exploring the dishes here. Ambiance: Warm colours on the walls and interesting moroccan pieces on the walls definitely add to the experience of the meal. Service: Fatima arrived at the restaurant about halfway through our meal. She came over to say hello to each table, some of whom seemed to be regulars. I felt that she genuinely wanted to make sure that everyone was enjoying their meal and having a nice evening. The only negative part of the evening (which wasn't a big deal at all) was that before Fatima had arrived, another family member was waiting tables who didn't seem to know the menu very well. We came here because the reviews were amazing so I guess I just don't care for Moroccan food. It was my first experience with it. The restaurant is two levels high with a third level for functions. It was very crowded when we arrived so glad we had a reservation. The place looked mediocre at best. Nothing much to look at. As we had never really had much Moroccan food before we opted for the buffet $27.95 so we could try a little of everything. The buffet looked very messy and the area was so small so it was very crowded looking. The food tasted ok but not good enough to make me try again. The rice pudding for desert was delicious but the banana cake very dry. The date squares are home made there and absolutely delicious. I think we might have enjoyed it much better had we ordered off the a la carte menu. The people were extremely nice though. I would probable say this is a great place but just not for me. read more

The family-run restaurant was very busy (on a Wednesday night) with a large group of about 20 people when we arrived but they managed to us within 5 minutes. Service was quick and friendly. Was in Ottawa for a week, and decided to try out the restaurant based on yelp reviews. The restaurant was not busy so was seated quickly by the host. Opted for the chicken tajine with figs and almonds over the buffet. The food was excellent, but was disappointed with service. Had to wait for 10 minutes for the dishes to be cleared and it took another 10 minutes for the server to notice that the coffee I had order had not been brought to the table. Keep in mind that this is buffet style, if you are into buffet and want to try something different this is the place - it's small, friendly and the food is good. This is by far one of the best finds in Ottawa. The food is amazing. I don't have a lot of experience with Moroccan food, but I imagine this is as good as it gets. I have be a few times and find myself craving to go back. The service is great and Fatima makes you feel so welcome. She opened the restaurant specifically for our group on christmas day, then proceeded to serve up a delicious buffet filled with one of a kind salads, soup, fall-off-the-bone lamb, chicken and fish tagines :) from the moment we stepped in, hot anise-scented rolls were served and the service didnt' stop there. I had the best meal I have had in years at Chez Fatima. This is a place which Anthony Bourdain would love. The owner recommended that I try the lamb tajine with prunes, figs, and apples. The meat was so succulent and tender that it was falling off the bone. It comes with couscous which had sweet potato in it - very tasty. The hummus was excellent, very fresh. The bread had a unique taste (in a good way) & it was perfect to scoop up the hummus with. The owner is very hospitable & friendly. Fatima herself welcomed us with her warmth and humour, and we were well cared for by one of her sons. We enjoyed a bountiful meal for two including harira soup and very fresh anise-flavoured bread, the best pastilla we've ever had densely packed with moist and flavourful chicken and sliced almonds, generous tagines of tender, juicy lamb shank with prunes & figs and chicken with green olives & preserved lemons, vegetables (squash, zucchini, etc.) and cous-cous and delicious sweets and lightly sweetened mint tea for dessert. We had been meaning to venture across the river to Gatineau and try this restaurant for months, and we are only sorry we didn't do it sooner! read more

I went to Chez Fatima last night for my partners birthday and we all had a fantastic evening. We all had the dinner buffet which included a wide assortment including yummy veggies dishes, fish, lamb shanks and of course couscous. Great dessert too including baklava and a tiramisu. A great restaurant with friendly staff. The food is delicious! We always go for the buffet. The lunch buffet is a great deal ~ $15. I love the lamb shanks with dates and other dried fruit (although I wish they had even more dates). The chicken with olives is yummy too. You don't always get lamb shank at the lunch buffet though.
