My Chicago greeter Joanne was amazing!!!

I'm so happy was able to get a tour with a Chicago greeter. Especially my greeter Joanne because she was so informative and has such a great love for her city. This tour of Chicago is something I will always remember and recommend to anyone that is traveling to the area. I also loved the Chicago Cultural Center and how inviting it is to the tourist and residents that visit.

This is such a fantastic program because you get to take a tour of the beautiful city of Chicago for FREE! It's a program where people from Chicago kindly volunteer their time to show you around their city. How cool is that? You basically go to their website and fill out the registration form. It asks what parts of Chicago you'd like to visit and vuola! Then someone contacts you within a week of your tour. Our volunteer took us to Millennium Park, the gold coast, and finally finishing at the Lincoln Park zoo. The volunteer services also gave us an all day CTA (bus or subway) pass for FREE. Along the way our volunteer Ellen provided us with a brief history of the city, buildings, parks, etc. It was a lot of walking but well worth the site seeing and it's architectural history. Overall, I would definitely recommend this FREE service tour.

We had so much fun with our Chicago greeter Adrian. It was great to hear the history of Chicago from a lifelong native and a great storyteller. Our Chicago greeter experience far exceeded our expectations and we wholeheartedly recommend Chicago greeters and especially greeters like Adrian that accommodated our requests and brought us to Hyde park. Thanks so much Adrian! #chicagogreeter #mychicagopix

We met with our greeter Alan Robinson in Chicago today and had so much fun. Learned so much about Chicago we would have never known on our own. Got to go on the Train to China town, boat ride from China town to Michigan Ave. Saw so much architecture and learned so much.... thank you so much Alan, would totally recommend Alan on your visit to Chicago!

Amazing and FREE! Decided to try the greeter tour, on the website very easy to plan a tour in advance. Very private tour, not a grouped tour was awesome! Our tour guide, Pam, was so great! We toured Chicago at literally the most crowded day of the year right before the st. Patrick's day parade. Pam was great at avoiding the crowds, taking us to the lesser known sites, and giving us fun facts! Overall a very comprehensive tour of art and history! We ended at the art institute where Pam used her membership to get us in for free! We got way more than we would've expected from even a paid tour!

Essentially I personally base it on the likelihood of a return visit and I try to be stingy with 5 star reviews since they should be "special" in my eyes. Price/Value also play a role obviously but there are $ and $$$$ littered across my grading scale. 5 stars - "I'll go out of my way" (approx 6 % of my reviews) 4 stars- "If I was in the area I'd go here and would recommend", (approx 38% of my reviews) 3 stars "Maybe if was nearby", (approx 37% of my reviews) 2 stars -"Would likely not return, Only if you want to go", (approx 16% of my reviews) 1 star -"No thanks, even if I was hungry", (approx. 3 % of my reviews)

My wife did this tour a couple years ago and highly recommended it, but I wasn't especially interested because I had also gone to school here and figured I knew enough about Hyde Park already. However, she insisted that it would be worth our while and so I agreed to climb on the bus. And it was the absolutely right decision, because the tour was excellent. In fact, it wasn't just a tour of Hyde Park. It included the surrounding neighborhoods of Washington Park, Kenwood, Jackson Park, and Woodlawn. Since this was a UChicago sponsored event much of the information related to the University's investment and involvement in the area. Our tour guide and founder of Chicago Detours, Amanda, is herself a graduate of UChicago and thus she had some additional insight into the relationship with the community. Though the 75-minute tour felt a little slow-going at times, there was much to learn about the vibrant but sometimes troubled history of the area. Amanda has tremendous knowledge and the excursion was both fascinating and entertaining. I can imagine that Chicago Detours would have equally interesting tours of other neighborhoods in this diverse city.
