As a Chicagoan, I enjoy doing various tours of my home city. I am glad that I had purchased a voucher through Groupon for this tour. Making a reservation was very easy for my tour. John was very accommadating. John had verified the location and the time the tour begins. The bus was very easy to locate on Clark Street. Checking in was a breeze. The seats were very comfortable. There are various screens throughout the bus so you will be able to view the snipet of the tv show or movie before seeing the building or location of the shoot. Hint: try to sit on the left side of the bus so you can see more of the attractions. Patrick, the guide, was fantantic. He is was very entertaining and informative regarding the various locations. The tour itself was about two hours. I would recommend this unique tour of Chicago if you are a tv/movie buff. read more

Great film tour. This was our second attempt at taking the film tour. The first attempt was last month when the bus was running 45 minutes late due to traffic on the expressway. Good thing we had a groupon that we could use to reschedule. We didnt want to wait the 45 minutes! So this time the tour was on time. The bus was actually early to arrive. I was extremely happy the bus was air conditioned and smelled lemon fresh! The tour lasted about 2 hours. It was non-stop movie clip playing while the bus was driving us to the places that were shot on film and our tour guide was giving us the history of it all. Our tour guide knew SOOOOOOOOOOOOO much about the movies. I'm impressed she saw them all (or maybe just most of them?). The films that they played dated as far back as 1915 (His New Job) and as late as 2009 (Time Traveler's Wife). I never knew SO MANY films had clips of Chicago in them. How awesome to have this information pointed out to me! I highly recommend this tour! read more

Really fun tour and very informative. This tour is billed as 90 minutes, but it was more like 2 hours. Could be due to traffic, but they definitely packed a lot in. The guide was very enthusiastic and funny and really kept the crowd going. He knew a lot of trivia and fun facts about Chicago and the many movies filmed here. We saw clips of so many movies filmed here - many of which I didn't even know about. Highlights included: Batman Begins Risky Business Oceans 11 Road to Perdition The Untouchables Primal Fear About Last Night The tour guide even paid homage to John Hughes with a special tribute. I think every 80s kid on that bus had a tear in their eye. Chicago Film Tours is a great way to spend an afternoon whether you're a local or a tourist; a film buff or not. Do you like a tour that is BYOB?!?!?!? That's right bring on the booze. Then this is a tour for you! Just got back from the information filled Chicago Film Tour. What a fabulous time even if the weather was crappy (rainy & COLD for June 11th). John & his team could not have been more gracious & kind to those of us on the tour. I learned so much from this tour, our guide was very informative & extremely entertaining. These people know their stuff & have put alot of effort into making this a great tour. You can tell they enjoy what they do which makes an experience memorable. I would highly recommend this if you have friends/family coming in from out of town or if you want to learn more about movies that were filmed here in our beloved town. Chicago used to be a big player in the movie industry back in the day--you will learn all about that. The tour covers about 30 miles of film history in this great city & it is something not to be missed. I think a small criticism would be that they show a little too much of Vince Vaughn--for a minute there I thought he was there financial backer. Also, there is much more they could have included, but then the tour would go on for hours. I say--get yourself on this tour, you will not be sorry. read more

This was a lot more fun than I was expecting. Okay, that's what Mom B would call a left-handed compliment. But the fact is, I went on the tour primarily because it was free and my days are open. The day of the tour was kind of gloomy, and I almost bailed. But I went anyway, and ended up having a great time. First of all, this should be called the Chicago Film History Tour. Our guide, who's a writer for HollywoodChicago.com (got the plug in there) really knows his stuff. So rather than just showing us locations where they shot Risky Business and The Blues Brothers, he gave a good overview of the history of film production in Chicago, from the silent era to today. For example, he showed clips from the 1910 silent movie "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" (as we approached Oz Park), not just because L. Frank Baum was living in Chicago when he wrote the book, but because that movie was shot by Selig Polyscope, one of the two film production companies working in Chicago at the time. See how much I learned? "Showed clips," you say? Indeed. One of the great things about the tour is that the bus is equipped with video screens. So rather than just talking about films shot here, they show actual clips, so you can see the locations off and on film. This works really well for a location like Wrigley Field, which is featured in so many movies. Pat (?), our guide, showed how the field appeared from the 80s to today, and pointed out shots where elements of the stadium (the sign out front, for example) had been changed for various films. Fun! Another thing I liked, and was surprised by, was the number of movies the tour covered. Everyone knows about Ferris Bueller and The Blues Brothers, but the tour touched on recent releases (Eagle Eye, Wanted) and lesser-known movies (My Bodyguard, The Hunter). Even if you think you're pretty savvy about movies shot here, you may be surprised. My only complain is that the tour is a little long. After hitting Uptown, we swung down to Chinatown, which was one town too many. Especially since most of the near South Side locations seemed to be featured only in Backdraft, and a lot of the time it was hard to tell what we were supposed to be looking at. Perhaps they need to start a second tour that hits some South Side hot spots. Overall, though, this is a great way to spend a couple of hours. If you have family visiting from out of town, it's a great way to see the city. read more

What can I say, I'm a movie buff. I'm the kind of person that has to look up filming locations and insider info so that I can actually see in person what was depicted on film - consider it a bridge between fantasy and reality. There's something magical about seeing something with your own eyes that you previously saw on the big screen. Regardless, that's where this tour comes in. If you've got a couple of hours to kill, I highly recommend it. In addition to the movie facts, sights, etc., you get a nice tour of many of Chicago's neighborhoods that you might not have visited otherwise (speaking from the view of an out-of-towner). The tour feels a little rushed but I don't think that's the fault of the organizers. After all, they're driving a full-sized bus in downtown Chicago. They can't stop in the middle of the street so you can take a ton of pictures. No worries... Tip: go for the 12:30pm version. They won't be time-bound by another tour. If you're on the 10:30am tour and there's a traffic jam, your tour might be cut a little short so that they can make it back for the next group of people. Now this is my kind of tour!! How have they not had one of these before? Being one who folllows the going ons of film in and around Chicago, I was so stoked when Chicago Film Tour hooked us up! First off BYOB? Fabulous! Plus a bathroom? Even more kudos! John, the tour guide, was awesome and knew his stuff. You could tell he was a film geek definitley and I would have liked to have stayed on longer to chat it up with him. This turned a rainy, nasty (supposedly spring) day into a lot of fun with some great people! You start off downtown and work your way north through the Viagra Triangle, then Lincoln Park (home of Oz park) and then onto Wrigleyville (always gotta make the Wrigley Field stop!) and into Uptown. Then back down Lake Shore Drive heading south down Michigan Avenue heading to 18th street and onto Chinatown! I've never seen a tour so far spread out in a matter of 2 hours! I feel like I can't get *out* of Chicago in two hours! So yay to Bill the driver for dealing with all that traffic! I think they put in some odd films that most people don't know about and left out some key places that we literally passed by and would have been more recognizable to standard movie goers. I know you can't fit everything in as much as you'd like to, but I would definitley go for the more known films. Definitley go. For $30 you get a grand tour of the city period! It's always fun to tour where you live that's for sure. And hey, Chicago Film Tour, after Public Enemies comes out come talk to me about everything filmed on my street! Oh, and our tour guide John was the perfect guide - he definitely loves films and was not just another bored out of his mind tour guide trying to remember a memorized script. To start us off, John gave a rundown on the origins of filmmaking in Chicago - an amazing history that I never even knew existed. After that, we watched movie clips on little drop down tvs, getting a quick background of the movies while John pointed out the sites where they were filmed. We were welcome to ask additional questions at any time and throw our two cents in whenever - John was so familiar w/ everything movies that he could easily go w/ the flow. It's a simple as this: If you like movies, you'll love this tour. As a film student at Columbia, I was really ecstatic when my partner purchased this Groupon for us. I was even more excited yesterday at 12:30 PM when the bus pulled up and we boarded. Of course, being the first one to step aboard, I made sure that we sat directly in back of one of the screens toward the back (definitely the best seat ever). Our guide kept us entertained from beginning to end, narrating film clips from over 50 movies while showing us the exact locations in which they were filmed. Even when we got stuck in traffic, there was never a dull moment (Just saying, when we were in front of the old playboy mansion there were a few older women tourists in front of it snapping pictures. Our guide claimed they were past playboy bunnies and our entire bus was cracking up). Most importantly, I learned so much about specific films that I had never known before. Not to mention, I even learned a lot just about the city of Chicago! The tour went from Downtown to the Northside; Uptown, Lakeview, and then down to the Southside; Chinatown, and back downtown. That's a lot to cover - and they did, successfully. I'd have to say one of the coolest parts was seeing Cabrini Green, where the great "Candyman" was filmed. I had no idea it was so close to downtown! Did you know it's right near the Rainforest Cafe and the Rock n Roll McDonald's? We even got a quick history lesson on it which was great. All together, it was just a great experience for the two of us. I'd definitely say this tour is "fun for the whole family." Even though it was supposed to be 90 minutes, this tour was about 2 hours of history, trivia, and film clips. I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves the history and art of film. read more

What an interesting and fun way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Sure, it easy easy to get the same facts online, but there is something about driving past each location. The bus' seats were quite comfy, especially since the tour lasts two hours. And, there is a washroom on board. Yes!! Can enjoy bottles of water and not have to worry about any bathroom issues. About two months ago I purchased a GroupOn for my fiancee's birthday. I knew he would love the film tour so last Thursday we finally had a chance to use it. The bus meets at a great location-the Rock N' Roll McDonalds (super easy to find). There is plenty of room on the bus and you can bring your own food/drinks! How cool is that? There is a bathroom, just in case on the bus too. This is great especially since the tour is 2 hours long. We had a great tour guide who was very good at filling in the gaps when we hit traffic and also throwing out some tibits about Chicago for the tourists. Even though Isaac and I are from here, we still enjoyed seeing some of the famous and not so famous places we had seen in movies, especially Bruce Wayne's penthouse! :D The tour was just the right amount of time too-not too long, and definitely not too short. I would highly recommend this tour for summer visitors who have been sunburnt and have been walking around forever. FYI: I didn't feel that there was a lot of great photo ops, mostly just chances for you to physically see the spots. The bus is always stopping and going so be sure to chew gum or something if you get a little car sick. Also, I would get there a bit early if you are in a group to make sure that you sit with them! read more

My husband and I came to Chicago to celebrate our anniversary so when we saw this Groupon for the movie tour of our favorite city, we jumped on it. Not being from a big city, we rode the Metra into town and were late arriving to the appointed time of 10:30. I emailed John and he was very accomodating to allow us to join the 12:30 instead. We truly enjoyed everything about the tour-the fact that we could see the movie clip and then see the actual site was perfect. Patrick is a fantastic tour guide and so knowledgeable about all things cinematic. We have told all of our friends about this experience and we hope to come back with our kids so that they can enjoy it as well. Thanks so much for making us love Chicago even more than we already do! What a fantastic way to see the city - whether you are visiting Chicago for the first time or are a long time resident. This 2-hour tour takes you all over the city not just to the popular tourist destinations but to the neighborhoods that are showcased in popular movies of today and yesteryear (think Charlie Chaplin before the talkies). A small bus with plush seating this is a fairly comfortable way to sit and see the city. There are 3 small screens in the bus and the guide plays clips of the movies to give you a better idea of what you're looking at. My one complaint was the sound. Some scenes didn't have sound or it was a bit wonky. I'm sure this can be fixed and wouldn't hesitate to recommend this tour! read more

Yesterday I went with a friend on the Chicago Film Tour. We had bought GroupOn's previously and thought it may be fun. My opinion, it wasn't what I expected and I'm not really sure if I'd recommend it. With a little research, you're bound to get more out of it than going on the tour. Well I guess that's if you live in Chicago, if you're visiting then it may be worth it. The tour started at the Rock n' Roll McDonald's. I was thinking we were going to take a double decker bus so you could sit on the top and take pictures of where these movies were filmed but instead we got on a charter bus. My friend and I were the last ones to check-in so we got the last 2 seats on the bus. They were in the first two rows. We asked the one lady, who wasn't even sitting next to the window, if she'd mind changing seats with us so we could sit next to each other but she said no. She was a bit rude about it too. Sheesh. Oh well. So the tour began with our tour guides introduction. I think he really liked Vince Vaughn because he showcased a lot of his movie clips and often referenced to him, mainly from The Break-Up. Our tour guide had been in the industry for 20+ years writing reviews, interviewing, etc. We were given a sheet of paper of all the movies that had been filmed in Chicago. The list and movie locations are listed below. So for the tour, we basically drove around the city, going to the Northside first. It was nice getting a tour of parts of the city I've never really explored before but I guess I was expecting a stop here and there. It was basically straight drive throughs. If it wasn't for groupon, I would not have known about this tour. My son who is 17 is a huge Blues Brothers fan so i purchased the tour for him for his birthday. Super easy to make reservations. The guys a extremely friendly. We had a blast and it was a great way to see neighborhoods that you never would have gone to otherwise. My family visits Chicago from Denver about 2-3 times a year, so we have been on lots of tours. This past weekend we went on the 2 hour Chicago Film Tour, and it has become one of our favorites! One of the best features, is there are TVs on the bus, so you can watch the clip of the film as you drive by the location where it was shot. We drove all over Chicago, and saw a lot of places that I've driven by on many occasions, and didn't know there was any significance to. The guide was funny, energetic, extremely knowledgeable, and interactive with everyone on the bus. I am going to go ahead and throw 4 stars out for the Chicago Film tour mostly due to the level of effort these guys put forth to make the tour a great time. Our tour started a little late and we missed a few parts due to the gay pride parade but it certainly made for some interesting sights along the way so no worries. It was our tour guides first effort and you could tell she still had some kinks to get it but overall I think she was very funny and new her stuff. Now Pat on the other hand is the man to know, the guy is just a great time. He is all about his guests and will do everything in his power to make sure you have a blast. Great way to see the city. I bought my ticket for this tour through Groupon for $15 a person. I think it was worth $15 not the regular $30 price. It is a tad long but you really do learn some intersting facts about many Chicago sites. For instance, one of my favorite restaurants in Chinatown is the Monn Palace. I am always fascinate with the Fire Station that is right next to it. That Fire Station was in the movie Backdraft! Or how the Uptown Theatre Lobby was the toy store in Home Alone. I would definetly recommend this tour to all of you Yelpers if they run another Groupon. read more

I wish I had been able to have the great experience it sounds like everyone else had. Unfortunately, the tour bus didn't show up for our confirmed reservation.....TWICE! The first time they claimed the bus had broken down and they called the wrong number to notify us. All correspondence had been through email and the email had the correct phone number. Mistakes happen......we'll do the tour another day. When we rescheduled, they suggested Oct 7. My wife asked "will you be running the tour on sun 10/7 with the marathon going on?" The response: "The Marathon starts at 730 and all streets are due to open by 300. So, yes." Kind of a snarky response, but whatever. Sunday, Oct 7 at 3:30: NO BUS! We called and got a message: tours that day had been canceled due to....wait for it......THE CHICAGO MARATHON! We left a voice mail and sent an email. The response: "I am SO sorry! Talked with folks last night and was told roads would not be open. I inadvertently called the bad # I had." A) they were never given a bad number, B) throughout the email correspondence our correct number had been listed 3 times, and C) what about emailing? We responded detailing our poor experience to date and gave the opportunity to make this right. Two and a half weeks later: no response. Apparently there is no intention to correct TWO instances of standing us up. We had purchased our tickets through a Groupon offer so we were at least able to obtain a refund. We didn't really want a refund. We wanted to take the tour but were not going to wait in vain a third time. read more

Took this tour yesterday it was excellent! Very entertaining and enjoyable. I now have a long list of movies to see many of which I had no idea were filmed in Chicago. Not only does the tour provide information on movies filmed in Chicago, it gives you a glimpse of many of Chicago neighborhoods. A real feel of Chicago. We went from downtown to Lincoln Park to Uptown to Noblesville, Old Town, the Gold Coast, the South Loop, Chinatown and more. The host John and the very entertaining guide Patrick were great as well. I took the tour last month during my visit to Chicago and loved it! I actually haven't seen too many movies, but took the tour anyway. Our guide Jess was hilarious and really knowledgeable about Chicago and the films. It didn't even matter that I hadn't seen any of the movies - I felt super informed at the end of the tour. I really liked that the bus picked us up right near the Rock 'n Roll McDonalds, and across from the Rainforest Cafe Downtown Chicago where I ate dinner later that evening. My family was visiting from Indianapolis and we had bought the Groupons for this tour. Being a huge film fan and recently having moved to Chicago, I was really excited for this tour. It definitely didn't disappoint. Our tour guide was quirky and fun and I loved the nerdy commentary even the few times it was completely over the top. They point out so many locations that I had no idea anything was ever filmed there! It was really fun and educational. Yes, I was 2 minutes late. I'll take responsibility for that but who ever heard of a tour in Chicago that left on the dot and what tour would leave a paid customer when they are only 1/2 block away?!? I dropped my friend at the meeting spot 10 minutes early and went to park nearby. She was standing there with my paid receipt in her hand and they were pushing to leave without me 2 minutes BEFORE the scheduled departure time. At exactly 10:30am, I was standing 1/2 block away just waiting for the light to change so I could cross the street and the bus took off without me. I was speechless that they would leave a paying customer who was in sight of the bus....what is this.....CTA?? I understand they are in a time crunch for the next tour to start but this is Chicago and we all know what the traffic is like so why wouldn't they plan for a cushion?! They rescheduled us on the 12:30pm tour and it was fine but not good enough to make up for the bad customer service. It was really ironic that the 12:30pm tour left late because we waited for some people that were late. Skip this tour but if you must go, better get there early!! read more

What a great tour! I ended up taking one of the tour that specializes in only the Blues Brothers. The video clips they showed on the tv monitors were perfectly timed so that you could see what was going on in the movie and look up and see the location/building. The guide for very enthusiastic and had lots of knowledge about the movie and the city. The bus was comfortable, had a bathroom, and wasn't hot (we went on a 90 degree day). They also let you bring whatever drinks/food you would like on the bus. Including adult drinks! read more

I went on this tour on Halloween. The tour itself was great. Comfortable bus, clean and its a jam packed tour. They take you throughout downtown, up on the North side, down south, etc. There was a lot of great information and you were kept interested the whole time. I am giving it three stars, due to the tour guide. I see another review of somebody that went on Halloween, which means that we got the same tour guide. The tour guide attempted to be funny, but his "jokes" fell to dead silence. To make it even worse, he made two comments that were extremely offensive to me. I live in Chicago and I think that tourists and locals alike will enjoy this tour. Hopefully the tour guide learns some manners in the meantime. read more

What a fun, informative tour - and a great way to see the city of Chicago to boot! As Californians we had never been to Chicago so this was a great way to see areas we might not have otherwise seen. Seeing the movie clip on the screen first really brought everything to life. Patrick, our tour guide was awesome! As a film critic he really knows the film industry, the history and details about the many movies that have been shot in Chicago. The sense of history was amazing -- Wrigley field, the Biograph theatre (where Dillinger was gunned down) and so many other places that I never knew about (Essanay studios, Chess records). This is a great tour, whether you are a movie lover or a city tour lover. It is a two hour bus tour, on a very comfortable tour bus with a great driver, that covers a myriad of Chicago movie locations. It spans the city from Chinatown to Uptown and movies from the silent era to today. As you pass each location, the bus shows video of the location in the movies. i thought the guide was entertaining and that the bus driver was the master of chicago traffic, but outside of that i was not impressed. the entire tour was given from inside the bus, which bothered me a bit. quite a few of the actual movie scenes were shot inside the buildings, so you don't any sort of recognition when you're staring blankly at the outside of the building it was shot in. the time you have to absorb the location of the actual scene is paced with traffic flow. so there might be a 5 minute buildup, but if that light is green you have only a few seconds to try and catch a glimpse of the actual spot... it was probably the only time i'll ever hope for more traffic. the bus was kind of bigger too so if you're on the left side and the scene is on your right you're pretty much out of luck. i feel like they tried to cram as many movies in as possible, which i'm sure is what some people are looking for, but i would've rather they cut some of the lesser known ones out and give us some time in a few locations. maybe take some pictures where chicago transforms into gotham or see the inside of the magnificent bank they used in public enemies. read more

We had the Groupon for the Blues Brother Tour. We have always liked the movie and moved to Chicago in October. It was great to see all of the south side locations, but sad to see all the things that have been taken away. Overall the tour was great. The DVD kept freezing because of the bumps on the road. I thought everything was well done. I would def take my friends who are blues brothers fans on this tour. Really enjoyed seeing the old "Ray's music shop" on 47th street. read more

Groupon got us on this tour, which we have been wanting to take for years. Nice to sit back and take it all in, visiting pockets of the city we hadn't explored before. Guide was informative and just cheesy enough to be ok. Worked respectfully with the driver. The number of movies and sites were extensive and we are looking forward to seeing several movies we haven't seen. Delightful way to spend an afternoon. Glad to support a family business. This tour was kind of a dissapointment but I had a Groupon so I can't complain. I felt it was overly long for the material covered. The bus monitors are also not conveniently located for every seat, although there were plenty of empty seats so we eventually moved and that helped a bit. read more
