It seems like a normal church (whatever that means) in Rome but I had heard about and seen pictures of the ceiling and needed to see it for myself. I feel like I spent considerable time standing there staring up at it, wondering how the effect is achieved.
At first it seems like it might be a regular ceiling with a mural inside the gold detail, but the mural spills out over the gold and casts a shadow back on the ceiling. It breaks boundaries and just about comes to life.
The rest of the church is also beautiful and you can walk up quite close to the front as a visitor. There is a designated prayer area in the front that is closed off for visitors. We tried coming in the afternoon but it opens at 4pm...unsure if that's when it first opens for the day. read more
