I had the distinct pleasure of fostering 2 adorable kittens from DSPCA for 3 weeks. They always…read moreneed fosters, so if you have the time and a bit of patience, I definitely encourage you to look into this! The foster program basically is this: The kennels and cages need turnaround at the shelter and the pets need to be immunized. This is where the volunteers come in. Fosterers pick up the pet(s) at DSPCA, which provides everything needed such as litter, litter box, food, food dishes, as well as any necessary medications. I took home 2 sister kittens who were a bit feral (the woman at SPCA said they think the mum was feral). Although I'd had cats most of my life, I'd never raised feral cats - this was certainly different! They were very sweet, yet not quick to be friendly socialisers! With a little TLC, google research on socialising feral kittens, we were eventually a happy household after 2 weeks! By the end of the 3rd week, the cats were approaching me and lay on my lap while I was reading. Fostering was truly such a rewarding experience. There are so many abandoned animals who just need a little TLC and DSPCA will find them a loving home. I would give DSPCA 5 stars, but my only disappointment is their telephone system, which frankly sucks. Had a rather important question (forgot how many eye drops were needed each day) and could not get through to ANYONE. I tried all options on the menu. When I was finally able to leave a voicemessage, nobody ever returned my call - ever. Aside from this little hiccup, I encourage you to foster if you have it in your heart to volunteer. The minimum timeframe (i think) is 2 weeks, but typically they need people to take the cat(s) (sometimes dogs as well) for 3 weeks during immunisations. You can sign up for emails at dspca.ie and also fill out a volunteer form, which makes things quicker when you arrive at DSPCA. Signing up for this online will also give you a weekly email listing what animals need to be fostered. **Last note: I was told that in the last year, since DSPCA has expanded their foster program, 600 pets' lives were saved thanks to the foster program. *warm fuzzies*

They run events throughout the year, attended by the great and the good, with one or two characters along the way-all worth seeing-from tours of the city, country houses and international trips to parties and exhibitions,all in the name of a great cause. One of the gems of the place is its book shop, while I believe it is strictly aimed to benefit its members, it is open to the public and houses an amazing collection of books ranging from Irish interest and coffee table books to some heavy weight academic reference material. One of the best of its kind in Dublin I would dare say! They have a members discount of 10%-so bully if you're a member! Its well worth dropping into if your out and about in this part of town and are passing on your way to get a hipsterfied coffee in one of those fashionable cafes on the street.

I enjoy volunteering but primarily if it involves work that I can see an immediate result with and I get that with this excellent organisation. Basically they build or refurbish buildings for people or organisations that can't afford to. The project that I worked on was helping paint the interior of an old Georgian hospital located just off Ballsbridge. It was an excellent opportunity to see what the interior of the building was like as they are scattered all around the city. It also was an excellent chance to make new friendships. They gave us free sandwiches and soup for our days work. I did it once a week for a few weeks but they are flexible with your schedule. Lovely people to work with, I would highly recommend getting in touch if you like to do some construction work!

Having done some work with them in the past, they are a very interesting organisation, covering such topics as separated children, acommodation and the asylum process. The staff are helpful and full of information. While much of their work goes unnoticed by the public at large, they do challenge perceptions (often negative) of asylum seekers and refugees, and seek to improve understanding.

St Vincent de Paul helps these families out in whatever way they can. The Vincent's shop in Dundrum is not one I shop in at all but I have donated bags of clothes to them regularly over the years. I think most people in Dundrum would be more familiar with the name "Fred's Fashions" for this store and probably still call it that. It makes more sense now for it to be called Vincent's though, they have now grown into a chain store around the country, great to see it doing so well, it needs peoples support to keep it going though!

I also gave them some small appliances that I have like and iron etc. They were so grateful for the donations and I felt great too to be clearing out all of my hoardings and also helping these good folks make more money for their great cause. It's one of those NGOs that is well-known throught the country - highly visible and a common recipient of school-led fundraisers. They run things like soup runs, emergency housing, needle exchange programmes (and no matter how anti-drugs you may be, these are important), alcohol detox residences and prevention/early intervention. They are (unfortunately) doing a bustling business at the moment, if the constant queues for the offices outside my house are anything to go by too...though it feels wrong somehow to be popping up to the flat while other people are desperately looking for a roof over their heads...
