One of his guys cemented the hole back up after they removed a large brick that was blocking the whole. Aaron advised getting a carbon monoxide detector which we will soon. Great team at Chimney Cricket. They were very responsive to my initial inquiry, and overall did great work. I called them out because one of our gas fire places wouldn't start. The first thing they did was test and inspect everything from a safety perspective. We determined that the non-functioning unit, already long in the tooth, needed replacing. We went over my options and selected a ventless (or vent-free) gas log set. It doesn't burn with the same aesthetically pleasing lively flicker, but it burns much cleaner, safer and more efficiently. The Chimney Cricket team came back the following week and had the fireplace cleaned out and installed in no time (pictured). Would definitely hire this team again. We enjoy using our chimney a lot, especially in the autumn and spring months. So I knew our chimney needed cleaning and an inspection is always a good thing. They arrived about an hour early, which is no problem for me. They needed about thirty minutes to sweep, vacuum, and visually inspect my chimney. They left no mess at all. So I'm very satisfied with that! What they do not do is clean the clean-out that goes to the basement where there is an access door. They aren't alone with that - I've never had any chimney sweep company willing to do that. Nevertheless, it was something I wanted to have done. They found no issues with the chimney except for the metal door on the floor of the firebox that allows ashes to be swept into the clean-out that goes to the basement. Their recommendation was to get a piece of sheet metal and lay it over the door so that no hot ashes or embers could fall into the chute. He said to never let anything hot go into that chute; it could result in a fire. This leads back to my concern with the clean-out. Having said that, I am happy with their work, price, and responsiveness and will use them again. read more

They were patient in explaining what they observed in the inspection of our chimney. I thought $109 was a bit pricey given just an eyeball inspection, and leaving no notes on the receipt of what they observed. Very simple visit, but a pretty high price tag. I was shocked to make a call in the morning to see if they could come out, and them answer with they could come at noon later that day. Is that a good sign or a bad sign? We just bought a new house and have two real wood burning fireplaces (yay!), but the inspector had noted that we needed to put caps on our chimney to bring it up to code (I think that's the right terminology). The owner showed up on time and basically looked up both chimneys for like a second and said both were in good shape. I was shocked that's all it took... No camera or deeper inspection. So here's hoping we're okay on that end. But the caps definitely cost us a pretty penny at $900 for two. Thank god it's a one time expense. Hope we'll be good to go for many years and now have someone to call yearly to hopefully look up our chimney for five seconds and say we're all good! read more

I found this company on Yelp, and I feel really happy that I listened to the positive reviews, as well as to the owner's responses to negative reviews. I made an appointment to have my fireplace and chimney inspected and cleaned. Two men (the owner and his son?) showed up on time. The older man had a thick accent so was slightly difficult to understand. I was simultaneously tending to two other companies for other services, so I lost track of time, but I think that the Chimney Cricket employees were doing their work for about 30 minutes. They used a flashlight to look into my fireplace and up into the chimney. The previous owners of my house had left behind a lot of ash, and Chimney Cricket spent time vacuuming up the ashes. My fireplace and chimney are now in good shape, so no repairs are needed. The total price was $200 plus tax, which is about $100 cheaper than a competing company that my friend recommended. read more

I found Chimney Cricket via Yelp and chose them based on the good reviews on this site. I called them to schedule an appointment to inspect my chimney and sweep. They happened to have someone in my area working another project and were able to come the same day. They arrived promptly and were very professional. After their initial inspection, they found my flue to be broken and advised that I could no longer burn a wood fire. Fortunately, I have a gas tap in the fire box, to which they advised that I purchase gas logs and should replace the existing copper pipe that was running to the tap. My original reason for calling was to have them take a look as to why we are seeing water in the firebox during a heavy rain. I explained the situation, to which they checked my damper from inside the house to verify it was closing/sealing. I was advised that the water was probably condensation. I mentioned it was more than condensation, as I have seen what condensation does in the summer time. I asked if my damper was checked outside and was immediately advised that the damper is fine, as they can hear it sealing and again mentioned condensation. It rained again recently and we ended up with the same water issue in the firebox. I decided to get on the roof and check the cap/damper myself. I was able to find a slight gap where the damper meets the chimney, which looked to be allowing water in. After opening the damper and returning to the roof, I confirmed that is where the water was entering. I bought some caulk to seal the gap. I am a little frustrated that Chimney Cricket didn't find this in their inspection. I expected one of their representatives would have checked my chimney both inside, outside, bottom, and top. I did not see them with a ladder to check the top of our chimney, but I can only assume that they did not. Outside of that situation, I was impressed by their prompt arrival and appreciated their suggestions for our gas logs and tap. They did a great job cleaning the chimney and cleaned up after themselves before leaving. read more

This Chimney Sweep Company is very good and extremely trustworthy! I have two fireplaces each having their own chimney. (They educated me on this as I always thought they fed into one chimney) They could have easily told me both needed cleaned and charged me twice as I would not have known the difference. Instead they examined both and determined only one was in need of a good sweeping. I also had them check out the hot water tank chimney. They explained the liner should have had a solid pipe connecting to the hot water tank. They said a new liner would cost around $1,500 however as my liner was still in good shape I could wait to have that work done. To be on the safe side they recommended I instal a carbon monoxide detector. They gave me great tips on fire burning to keep my home safe! Really and truly made me feel that they cared about my family and our safety. Which is smart as they want to keep their customers alive!!! They arrived on time. Refused to even examine my chimney inside or out and wouldn't listen when I tried to give him information I'd gotten from three other contractors. I was quoted a $170 cleaning on the phone. Ken came out and spent 1 minute looking at the chimney and said it needed cleaned and the damper fixed. He quoted me $250. After about a 10 min set up and 10 min cleaning he wrote up the invoice fro $250. I asked what was wrong with the damper and he said there was some debris behind the damper that was not allowing it to close. He said he removed the debris and now it works fine. I told him I was quoted $170 for the cleaning and questioned why I was being charged close to $80 for the damper. He quickly backed off and said i only need to pay $200. I felt scammed. I needed to have my chimney cleaned in preparation for burning wood this winter. I called Chimney Cricket, told him that I have a wood burning furnace, and gave him my address. I asked him how much he would charge me to clean my chimney. He told me $178. I agreed to the price and set a date. On the scheduled date, he arrived 30 minutes early, which wasn't a problem. He quickly ran a brush up into my chimney and then presented me with a bill for $210! Whoa, whoa! Wait a minute! I told him we had agreed on $178. He said that he had to charge me extra because I have a wood burning furnace and because he didn't know my house was all the way out near the airport - both things I had told him before he gave me an estimate! My advice is that if you decide to hire Chimney Cricket, on the day he shows up to clean your chimney, you may want to reconfirm the price you agreed on before he does the work.
