We heard about this place from our local friends and wanted to check it out. We went on a Saturday evening at 5 pm. They had just reopened after closing for two weeks for renovations. There was a line to get in but it didn't take more than 10 minutes before we procured 2 seats at the bar. The place was packed and full of energy. The interior is anchored by a large bar with about 10 stools. We had three dishes and overall the food was ok. Our favorite was the Kingfish Sashimi in lime, chili, coconut and Thai basil sauce. Very fresh with Southeast Asia flavors. The Crispy Barramundi & Green Apple Salad with Caramelized Pork was a hit and miss. The crispy barramundi was good but the cartelized Pork was super salty. The Pad Seuw with wagyu beef and rice noodles was another kiss for us. We found it too saucy and on the salty side. The service was adequate. There were four bartenders behind the bar but it seem like they didn't have one person dedicated to the bar patrons. To be fair when we did flag someone down for service, they were very friendly and efficient. Seems like the menu here is a hit and miss. You just have to know what to order. I'm not even kidding. This place has the BEST asian fusion food I have ever tasted!! No joke! I loved it so much, I bought their cookbook. hehe You know a place is good when the locals and the tourists tell you to go there. There was also a 30 minute wait at 5:30 for two people on a Tuesday. Luckily they had a spot available at the bar open right away. Since the menu was so extensive, my husband and I opted for the "Feed Me" menu for $69, and boy did they feed us. If there is a specific item that you really want to try, they will try to add it into the meal as well. The food just kept coming and coming until we were full and we were not disappointed at all. What they gave us: Kingfish sashimi - the perfect amount of lemony goodness. I am now a major fan of kingfish. Pork roll up - a pork version of the Vietnamese spring roll. Wonderful hoisin sauce. The veggies complimented the meat very well. Salt and pepper calamari - no complaints here. Perfect crispy and cooked. String beans - my husband said that they were better than the ones I cook. lol Probably from the crispy bits they put on top that added texture to it Pork short ribs - tender, soft, and falls off the bone. Marinade was a good mix of Asian flavors. Butter chicken - this was probably the tamest dish because it tasted so much like other good ones we've tried, but it was good. Just not very adventurous. This place came highly recommended, and is one of the few places in Melboure that I check out due to recommendations by friends on Yelp (namely because I prefer to explore than simply go on computer generated recommendations). While it is a Thai restaurant, it isn't your typical one as the menu is much more set than many of the other Thai restuarants I've been too (which means no option of beef, chicken, lamb, or pork on your pad thai). However, the atmosphere is nothing short of electric, though you will need to time yourself, because the place does fill up pretty quickly. Chin Chin is a modern fusion Asian restaurant, but sort of like a traditional asian restaurant, it's much better to go with someone who has been here before. They have quite a long list of menu items that you can order a la carte, or you can order one of their "feed me" menus, that the kitchen will put together for you. The option may seem expensive to you, but the thing here is, they will feed you until you are satisfied. I've been here a few times and I can't remember every single dish I had (too many) but all of their dishes were great. One of their dishes - the beef pad see ew - is heavenly. I had dreams about this dish afterwards. Please get it and share the pain of not constantly eating this dish. On top of that, the venue is great! The deco is a bit alt/funky. Extremely popular restaurant. Gets crowded quickly even on weeknights. Luckily solo diners can dine at the bar seats. This is an upscale clientele eatery and the prices reflect that. Diners arrive in business, casual, or date night attire. Bartenders do a great job juggling drink orders and tending to seated diners. Great cocktails. I only ordered one dish. Now I know why they call it the Crying Tiger. It's because the dish is so spicy that supposedly, it would make even a tiger cry when he ate it. I did not know that so I learned this the hard way. Three friends and I came in on a Saturday after 9 and the place was packed. We were told that it would be a half an hour wait so we started to leave. But then the hostess said that we could be seated immediately if we were willing to squish into a small table, so we agreed. The table wasn't too small, so it was doable. The Crying Tiger is "char grilled waygu with a chilli tamarind dressing, ground roast rice, fried glass noodles, and Thai basil". I can handle spicy foods. But this was beyond spicy. They should have called it the Crying Mel instead because I was literally crying in between each bite while chugging a glass of water. I must have asked the waitress for a refill at least three times. (AND stole my friends' glasses too). The way I was drinking water, you would have thought that I was stranded in the desert for three days but nope. It was just because my mouth was on fire. They put A LOT of these tiny spicy peppers but by the time I was able to pick them all out, my taste buds were already burnt and I couldn't taste anything else. If it weren't so spicy (and there wasn't as much dressing as they put) it could have actually been good. Maybe their other dishes are better? Judging by the other Yelp reviews, the kingfish sashimi sounds/looks good, which I didn't get a chance to try. While both mains were absolutely amazing, the coconut rice was a stand out!! So creamy, flavorful and a perfect complement to our meals. They don't take recommendations so be prepared to wait. We rocked up at 7 on a Thursday night to be told the wait was 90 minutes. Having been ready for this we repaired to a nearby hostelry for an aparatif or two. Well within the 90 minutes we were called and rushed back. We were seated pretty promptly and opted for what was essentially a tasting menu which, at $80ish a head wasn't cheap. But it was well worth it. Dish after delicious dish were placed in front dining and of us and we dived in. My personal favourite was the cuttlefish but everything was good. The last time I had been here, I was told of a 2 hours' wait so then had had sliders at Gogo Bar which wasn't ideal. The three of us got here on a Friday at lunchtime at around 11.20 and there were no queues. YAY. We were seated at a small table and promptly asked what we wanted to order. Let us breathe! Amongst the three of us, we ordered the beef pad see ew, the red duck curry with coconut rice, the bbq pork ribs and the fried green beans with cashewnuts and shallots Now the review: 1. Beef pad see ew - The noodles were rolled up and quite doughey and the texture was a bit weird but they were delicious.. The large thinly sliced steak bits were chewy and well seasoned. The dish overall is quite sweet. 2. Red duck curry with coconut rice - This was my favourite dish. When you first have a bite of the duck (massive leg pieces - we got three large pieces - so perhaps quarter of a duck or so), it tastes sweet but the flavour and spice level gradually builds up and hits you at the end. It's a great experience. The coconut gooey rice balances the spice perfectly. 3. Fried green beans - The cashew nuts and fried shallot is a nice touch to what would have otherwise been a generic dish. Great innovation. 4. BBQd pork ribs - You get around 4 large pieces in a spicy sauce covered with sprouts, greens and herbs. Lots of fresh flavours and the bbqd pork is well seasoned and tastes sweet, sour, spicy...just all flavours. Service is very quick. Very friendly. They do try to get you in and out as soon as they can. They do split bills! It did get noisy very quickly even though only half of the tables were being used. Not great for acoustics. I think the feed me option would be too much. We were told to order 2 little somethings and 2 mains. We still had food leftover at the end and were stuffed. There are many to choose from in small to large sizes. It's no wonder Chin Chin's sister restaurant, Hawker Hall, is doing so well, after following in these big steps. With an equally impressive cocktail menu, it's the perfect dinner spot, although you will be waiting. I suggest coming early or late for lunch, which I did both times and had zero queue! Pretentious and obnoxious drunk yelling and laughter fills the air, with a mixture of bogans in business suits who wanna look rich spending $300 on drinks and tapas. If you want to buy into hipsters making better Thai food than Thai people, because getting drunk, blasting music, bad lighting and elaborate gluten lactose free non-thai ingredients makes food taste better, than this is for you. Wait in a line like you're 21 in your clubbing days, then once inside, see the line extend down the hall. You finally reach the counter and they tell you it's a 2 hour wait. So you can F off downstairs to their overpriced bar and squash up on foot stools drinking $15 house wine like the rest of the peasants. Meanwhile, staff upstairs pick the suits to be instantly sat down while we wait cluelessly thinking this food better be good. We finally get the sms and go upstairs, to then be told wait with the others. No answer, we cluelessly wait standing for 20 minutes. We finally get seated at a crammed communal table. Eight out of the 10 dishes we ordered tasted like bland hot chili lime. The lamb and duck were crispy texture, but both were devoured between the 5 of us in 5 minutes, and we weren't going to spend more than $100 a head. I guess you could say its not amazing food, but probably compliments the drinks with their lime chili flavour. Service is slow. No water refills like many Thai places do. Just waiters interested in people ordering drinks. The rude loud people on the bar tables got the most service. I could see it's a fun venue for loud hens nights or people who think money and alcohol equates to good food. But the portions are not shareable for more than 2 people a dish. I left hungry and tired after 4 hours being there. However, I give one star for learning Thai in the bathroom. Maybe it's worth checking out if you're dragged along. Chin Chin was good, but overpriced. You're paying for the experience and the trendy vibe. The taste and quality of the food was very good, but $28.8AU for Pad Thai is aggressive. And $29.5 for the Butter Chicken was too high as well. If these dishes were $10 less I would've given it 5 stars. You can get better Thai back in the States for almost half the cost. I could decide what I wanted to so we all chose the feed me option. The bring out several of their popular dishes like a pre fixed menu. They were even able to accommodate different dietary needs! Some of the dishes that stood out was the pork roll ups, wagyu curry, pad thai, and the roti. Tons of flavors from spicy, tangy, sweet and savory as well as a wide variety of textures. The curry and roti combo is insane! To finish off the meal, we had a raspberry icecream and vietnamese coffee panna cota. Chin Chin can have a line but if you are alone, no worries, I was seated right away at the bar on a Thursday night. The bar staff were extremely attentive and friendly and asked me how everything was in a manner where it seemed like they actually valued feedback on the items. I had the Stir Fry of Bug Tail and Chopped Prawn along with the house white wine (made specifically to go along with the food). Very spicy but in a good way, and they were quick with refilling my water as I re-hydrated! For dessert, the Sticky Rice with tapioca custard and tumeric caramel. I'm willing to suck it up to get my mouth around some of their great dishes, which let's be honest, are really well priced and are offered up alongside a bangin' wine list and some great cocktails. Come for an early 6pm dinner, a 10pm supper or nightcap and you can expect a less manic environment, more smiles from the staff and a little more room to breathe. (They see 700+ through their doors any given weekday.) And yes, it's absolutely delicious. But what stands out about Chin Chin is the not only friendly but exceptionally knowledgable staff, the beautiful, light-filled open interior and the creative take on thai and vietnamese favourites. (Think soft shell crab, banana-leaf-wrapped barramundi, thai green and jungle curries, kingfish sashimi and oh yes, corn fritters.) On a recent visit I mentioned to our server that my dining partner was gluten intolerant and in a flash I was presented with a new menu noting all of the gluten free options. The waitress was really nice and gave great recommendations. My one complaint is my drink; it was pretty expensive ($20) for what I got. The drink was good, but not great and it was mainly ice.
