I have been making the annual trek to Zermatt from San Francisco for decades. Feeling like Asian food after the big mountain lunches we decided to try China Garden many years ago. Wow! Now we eat Chinese for more than half of the Zermatt dinners! I have literally been to dinner at China Garden over 30 times - the food is just amazing and flavorful and there are real actual spicy dishes. The chefs are all from China and are quite professional! My favorites are the Szechwan Beef, Spicy Asparagus, dry string beans, Duck, and Mongolian Lamb. They are all wonderful. read more

Bring the only Chinese food in the area, we didn't expect much ... If you pick their Menus A to D offered a fixed courses for 2 with appetizers to desert at $69-79 range. Not bad for the high priced tag in the area . Our soup was very spicy the shrimp dumpling was muddy and boring taste. The 3 main course . Stir fried beef. Fried duck and steam trout along w the fried rice was actually amazing !! This healed my craving during my EU trip !! read more

Pros: The service was exceptional. Our server was friendly and made a recommendation for the noodles. The noodles were delicious. The leeks in the lamb dish were amazing. The egg-roll while tiny (two bites per egg-roll), came with three sauces which was cool. Outdoor seating was available and there were heat lamps making it cozy. They brought out braziers with candles for ambiance and to keep the food warm. Our nephew was under dressed for the weather and the waitress offered him a blanket. Cons: It was very expensive. I understand Switzerland is expensive. I understand Zermatt in particular is expensive. I know the dollar is not worth as much these days. But we paid over $70 per person which included one entree each, 1 and 1/3 egg-roll per person, an order of noodles split three ways and two beers. Worse, the portions were on the small side and we left hungry seeking dessert elsewhere. Also, and this was no fault of the restaurant, but Switzerland allows smoking outdoors, so towards the end of our meal, another patron came outside to smoke, and that really put a damper on the end of our meal since that's all we could smell. read more

While staying in Zermatt I was craving asian food and I stumbled upon this gem while looking for food on the maps lol It's kinda hidden - not on the main street; the interior was nice and I was greeted and seated right away by our soon to be server. Started of with hot and sour soup + mushroom soup; it was nice eating it cause it was cold outside. Now for the main entrees. We ordered the crispy duck, chicken wings, calf liver & sautéed lamb. The duck was my favorite because it was so good, like the name says it's crispy, but don't expect it to be juicy which i didn't so my expectations were met, honestly it was so delicious i loved it. The calf liver & lamb kinda tasted the same to me just different textures because they were different meats but the sauce was about the same; it was still delicious though. The crispy chicken wings was delicious as well, just how i like it aka not too coated and salty - it was just perfect. It is on the pricier side but overall i'd say it's worth - just be ready to spend more than usual - oh yeah the portions are not big but they're not too small either. read more

I am honestly surprised by some of the 1-star reviews. My family and I just finished a meal here and it was fantastic. The waitress was very friendly and and attentive, the cooking time was normal, and the decor and ambiance of the place was very good. We had the steamed bass with ginger and leeks, stir fried string beans, and the pork belly slices in Sichuan sauce (aka twice-cooked pork). Everything was cooked authentically and tasted great. The twice-cooked pork was definitely best I've had outside of China (bear in mind I live in the US where Chinese food isn't great). The prices are on par with other mid-scale restaurants in the area. My rating reflects what I expect from a Chinese restaurant in Switzerland. I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone who is tired of western food and wants a change of cuisine. read more

Being Chinese, I'm always skeptical of Chinese restaurants that don't seem legit, especially 'fancy' ones in places like Zermatt where it feels like it only exists because they needed the token Chinese place to make it more 'international'. I was pleasantly surprised. Despite the 'chinoiserie' style decor (red and gold pillars like you'd see in Chinese courtyards, water feature with bamboo plants, etc) the food's 80% authentic. They definitely cater to a western palate --the flavours are less pungent than what I'm used to-- but it's still tasty. Anddd, the chefs are Chinese! Major plus. The waiters were mostly attentive and friendly and they also seemed quite knowledgeable about the menu/Chinese food in general. Mum asked for chili to have with the noodles and our waitress replied 'we have sambal', which was really surprising because sambal chili is very south-east asian and if I didn't grow up in Singapore I probably wouldn't even know that there are different types of chili paste! We even overheard the waitress explaining 'century egg' to a Russian family, which isn't on the menu, so I wonder how that came up. Props to them! Overall, an enjoyable experience, would come back. - - - - - Some quick comments on the dishes we tried. STARTERS: Hot and sour soup: great texture, all the right ingredients. Could do with more vinegar & pepper but each table has their rack of condiments so that's no problem. / 'Hun Tun' soup: Not bad. Meat dumplings with lots of seaweed. / Seaweed soup with egg flowers: The egg didn't have the right texture (though it did come close) and the 'hun tun' soup had more seaweed than this had. Still not bad though. MAINS: Noodles with vegetables: blah and uninteresting, I'd give it a miss next time. / Chicken 'Gong Bao': Spicy but would've liked it spicier (again the western palate thing). Chicken was very tender and juicy but it seems like they used peanuts instead of the usual cashew nuts. / Sliced venison with black pepper sauce: The meat was very very tender. Usually this dish has a thicker sauce with lots of crushed black pepper, but they used black pepper powder which wasn't as tasty. Still good. / Fried courgettes with garlic sauce: This was the one dish we probably shouldn't have ordered. The courgettes were pretty greasy (since they soak up the oil) and you only got a garlicky aftertaste. / We also ordered an asparagus dish with oyster sauce, which whilst definitely not traditionally Chinese, went quite well together. read more

My group enjoyed the ambiance at this restaurant. The food is tasty but in small portions, in line with what I expected from Zermatt. Towards the end of our meal, the waiter came by and wanted to move us to a smaller table to accommodate a larger group. We were at the end of the meal anyway so we finished the meal quickly. Food was nothing special, but the waitress said "we are original chinese!". Without taste, nothing. The only chinese restaurant in the area. It was recommended by the guy at hotel reception. Turns out they were sister companies. Went there for dinner, the place is well decorated reminiscent of those typical classic chinese restaurants you can find in China. We ordered the glazed spare ribs, tofu and mushroom soup, fried egg rice w/ vegetables, crispy duck w/ trio of sauces, mixed vegetables, and vermicelli cooked w/ soy sauce. The best one was the duck, it wasn't neither dry nor juicy but it was good. Glazed spare ribs were not as expected, they were kinda dry and didn't have enough glaze. Soup was bland but adding a little soy saunce and pepper or even black vinegar will help. The fried rice was decent. Mixed vegetables was not as good. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, that's a big plus. Overall it's your average chinese restaurant. read more

This was an OK experience overall. It's an upscale place on a side street off the Bahnhofstrasse. It is next door, I think, to a sister restaurant that is a traditional fondue place. The service was good here and we appreciated that the server was very honest about the menu. We were told, when asking about several different dishes, which ones were better, which ones good for kids, etc. She also lit our tableside warmers early and brought our plates out to heat them up (nice touch). For drinks, we got an Apelor spritz (Apelor and prossecco and soda, I think) and a gin and tonic. Both OK. We ordered a spring roll app and it came with a trio of dipping sauces....soy with wasabi, soy with vinaigrette and a sweet and sour duck sauce. They wee good and we saved them for later. I mixed them into the rice....pretty good combo. Spring rolls were OK....not the best or worst I'd ever had but definitely fresh-made. For mains, my daughters split the duck and the pork dumplings. I got the spicy shrimp (kind of like kung pao shrimp for those of you familiar with that dish) and my wife got a vegetable and tofu dish in a mild white sauce. My shrimp dish was excellent. It was the best dish we had. The duck was dry. The dumplings were fine except my daughter just decided (as 6 year-olds do) that she just didn't like them. The tofu and veggie dish tasted fine but was a little uninspiring. Plain white rice tasted just like plain white rice and we also got a veggie and egg rice that was good. The pricing wasn't too bad for Zermatt. Four of us ate for 133CHF which seems like a bargain in a place where a cocktail can cost 20CHF. I might go back here for the shrimp dish and to try something new. But, what really sticks in my mind is that the server really wanted to steer us away from certain dishes (thanks!!!) and that makes me think it is a bit hit or miss at China Garden. I think a good approach here is to ask about the best dishes. It would be a good place for a group as well. read more

Wow, we had such a lovely time on Chinese New Year with our Chinese guest!! After the meal, she even said it was "very close to fully authentic chances food". It was certainly the best beef and fish chinese dish I've ever had, but the venison was my favorite!! The service was outstanding and the desserts (fried ice cream + apricot dessert) were the perfect finish to the meal. The restaurant sits on a quiet side street off the main road. The venison dish was tender and delicious, while the pork with bean sprouts and Chinese chives and other vegetarian dishes were on the bland side. People on a low-salt diet might appreciate these dishes. Servers were not informed about a key missing ingredient in the two dishes we ordered, hence we were served with two unauthentic dishes. If you are not aware of expected ingredients or ready to wrangle if they are missing, you may want to avoid. Pricey but clean overall. read more
